Orcon Plan $7.05 Increase Actually a Benefit?

I received an email from Orcon stating that my broadband plan will increase by $7.05 per month. I presume this is due to Chorus putting their prices up.
I am just about to end the 6 months of half price.
The good thing is they state that they won't charge an early termination fee if I change providers etc.

Makes it a good opportunity to not be required to pay the next 6 months of broadband at full price.

Anyone got some suggestions on the next best plan at the moment that isn't CGNAT?

Seems the best.
Slingshot
$0/month or $776.00 for the year
EXCLUSIVE: 4 months FREE on a 12-month contract. Pay $0 for the first 4 months, then $97.

Any issues with Slingshot that people have encountered?

Contact is $65 open term per month when bundled with power / gas. $780 for the year (already with power/gas with them) but I think they are CGNAT.

Been with slingshot for the past 12 months and no issues.
    Just re-negotiated a new 12months, 69.95 p/month with $10 off p/month for bundling with mobile phone plans.

They also announced a price increase by $10.00 per month from 11 August 2023, unsure if this affects new contracts.

I'm with Slingshot on that deal - using my own ASUS router - and around 3 months in now and so far so good. No down time experienced at all. Good speeds on the higher speed plan. Our fibre provider where I live is Chorus.

One thing you will experience is they will phone you up and try really hard to get you to bundle power, and even offered to let me keep the 4 free months deal on top. But if you get offered this, run the numbers! Even with the money 'saved' by bringing my broadband cost down, their power cost for me was so high that it made more sense to keep it as is and use Frank Energy or Mercury for power (but do you own calculations of course).

    • Good to know. I have just signed up for Slingshot and will be using my Asus router. I believe there are no config changes.
Do you have any slingshot specific changes made on router?

      • I'm very much not a networking expert. I logged in to the router and worked through the Asus set up internet connection wizard. IIRC one of the steps was to select your ISP, I think I had to pick 'other' and then 'Slingshot'. Connected straight away. Did some speed tests on devices around the house and seemed sweet as so that's all I did.

        • Cool. I know a bit around routers, so will figure it out as it happens. Just wanted to check in case there was something specific. Cheers mate.

'Any issues with Slingshot that people have encountered?'

Kinda, I was with stuff fibre and my account wasnt migrated properly so I effectively had a contract with noone. Reached out through facebook messenger and they cancelled it without verifying much more than my name. No complaints about service and they never asked for the router back… which is being used as a second ap now.

Same with Skinny as well. I also had 2 months left, so signed up for slingshot 4 months free starting in 2 weeks. Seems to be the best offer currently. I think as price increase is happening almost across all providers, it's a good time for anyone to switch without paying termination fees.

Had been with slingshot before signed up with skinny last year and had no issues except for once when Vocus/chorus network went down for half a day or so.

    • Does skinny match for retention?

      • They didn't even ask for why I wanted to leave. Just asked what date I wanted to cancel and that's it. So probably not.

        • Yep. Seems they don't care about loyalty these days, yet offer 6 months free , don't understand the logic tbh

Slingshot and Orcon are under the same company

    • And 2 degrees which owns both of these brands I believe. 2Degrees have a deal for new customers. The competition is decreasing.

  • I haven't got an email from Orcon yet, what plan are you on? I'm paying $89.95 for gigabit currently.

    • I was on the $90 for 300/100. 6 months half price.
Gigafibre was $109 when I was going to sign up.

      • Pretty sure I'm on an older plan, it's called "Naked UFB GIGANTIC Unlimited".

        • Maybe you are safe from the increase being on an older plan shrug

    • I'm with orcon for fibre and power bundle, on gigabit fibre and received email this morning price will go up by $9.05 per month from 21 August.

  • Thanks for all your comments team. I think it's best to jump at the chance to switch.
Worth keeping an eye on your emails to see if you can break contract early to get the most out of other offers.

    • I called up Orcon and they gave me an even cheaper plan than what I'm currently on. Just mentioned that I was thinking of moving to another ISP.

      • What deal did you get?

Sorry just saw this, $80 a month for gigabit.

          • @kfr23: I tried and was offered $30 credit for the remaining of my 5 month contract to stay..
hrmm, $30 or $388 by switching

I was with Slingshot for a year, didnt have a lot of trouble with the fibre side of it, that all worked fine. Their so called customer service is some of the worst I have ever encountered if you ever have the misfortune to need to call them.

I genuinely think they must pay minimum wage and a lot of the people on the other side of the call didn't even deserve that much based on their skill level. They owed me a refund for an overpayment a relatively simple thing, they contacted me about it but I gave up in the end trying to get it, they are just to hard.

  • Where are you seeing the 4 months free offer? I can only seem to find a 3 months free on 12 month term for slingshot.

  • @Foodie do you know if they'll ask for the google nest wifi router back? (presuming you got one from orcon)

    • I chose not to get the nest wifi. Wouldnt surprise me if they ask for it back.

    • Yes they will ask you to return the router pack. I'm half way through the first year, the pack I received was second-hand (no packaging).

      • Ah bummer. I sent them an email anyway, see what they say. I see on their current T&C that if you don't return them, they'll charge $100 a unit, which isn't actually too rough, the router is $239 at Noel Leeming's atm.

        • Each pack will have at least 2 'units'. My pack has 3.

          • @sunshinenz: Yeah I got two, buying them from orcon is still going to be much cheaper for me than buying something new and moving to slingshot. Just putting it out there as others may want to consider doing the same :)

            • @davew: Are they tied to orcon specifically?

              • @Foodie: They're tied to orcon in that they're 'rented' from orcon, but nothing about them is orcon specific to my knowledge.

                • -1

@davew: A lot of them have custom firmware flashed on them which can limit some functions/settings.

              • +1

@Foodie: No they are generic Nest wifi

        • As mentioned above, if they are charging $100 a pop, I would rather get something else. Those nest are anyway older wifi5 I think and probably they don't support vlan tagging, so can't be used directly with few service providers.

Rather get a mesh router of your own.

          • @ace310: Nest wifi had an update to support vlan tagging. I use mine plugged directly into the ONT

  • The best they could do was credit the additional costs for the remaining time of my contract - 7 months to go. I've decided to switch to Slingshot with 4 months free.

    • I did the same. Retention team lady couldnt understand why i would jump ship for $388 saving vs her $34 offer.
I even got a call from slingshot via glimp saying "im sure orcon will be more than happy to retain you since we are the same parent company" they laughed at the situation.
