Found the offer this morning on the app.
Valid for the first 5000 people to save.

Great option for getting a discount on expensive Christmas flights!

Unfortunately as pointed out below, this deal excludes payments for flights as well as bundles.

Still great for your insurance and hotels at least!

Looking at the terms of the deal, it excludes flights unfortunately, so would only be for hotels or car hire. May work out ok for some cheaper accommodation (depending on place) but car hire I’ve found generally more expensive than booking direct.

    • That's very disappointing! Flights would be the obvious use for me

  • How is the Amex acceptance level around the place now? It always felt like I would see places excluding Amex and Diners Club cards. Is this a thing of the past?

Still the case with smaller or independent stores but it has gotten better. I mostly use mine at large chains, supermarkets, gas stations and some of the larger cafes in Auckland CBD.

      • Note I have now come across a pak n save (New Plymouth), a New World (Ohakune) and a NPD (Taupo) that do not accept AMEX even though I have used at these businesses in other towns. The NPD was new so maybe they just didnt have it set up yet but the two supermarkets at these locations choose not to accept.

        • Re Amex at Paknsave:
“ You can pay either by credit or debit card - Visa or Mastercard. American Express cards are also accepted at most stores, with the exception of PAK’nSAVE Mangere, PAK’nSAVE New Plymouth and PAK’nSAVE Dunedin.”

  • There's also an offer on there for Qantas - spend $1000 get $150 back

  • Hi any tips on how to be approve in terms of credit limit increase?

Have seen quite a few complaints regarding Amex Travel from the "American Express Platinum Secret Society" Facebook group. Majority of users suggest booking directly with hotel unless you are booking FHR (Fine Hotels & Resorts) with the Platinum Charge Card or Centurion card.

"Lesson learned. Don’t use AMEX Travel for anything but FHR or THC. There is zero value to use them for rooms at non-partners because they claim they have zero power when something goes wrong. I’m in shock that our paradise Hawaiian trip is junk under an AMEX Travel booking.
AMEX claims the resort is not releasing the funds for a booking where they sold us a room but gave us a much less valued room. The resort claims it is AMEX. Effectively robbery from us.
We booked many times for FHR and THC and had incredible experiences. This is the first (and last) time booking a “normal” destination. 4 hours of dealing with AMEX/resort and nothing resolved. Total sham.
TLDR: Use AMEX Travel for FHR/THC but not for standard bookings unless you’re willing to be screwed."

"For non-FHR/THC properties, Amex uses the Expedia booking engine to process the reservations. Expedia books reservations using a MasterCard account which is used to pay the hotels. Meanwhile the end customer pays Expedia using their CC of choice.
So technically… your Amex never touches the Hotel systems, until you arrive and use it to pay resort fees, incidentals, etc.
As for the zero power, this is also somewhat true as Amex didn’t make the booking. You used AmexTravel to create the booking but AmexTravel used Expedia to complete it.
As for the resort part, Expedia paid the resort so in turn they cannot release the funds to AmexTravel, they have to release back to Expedia."

    • Thanks for the tip and about the FB group! Does this offer work on FHR and Hotel Collection?

      • FHR & Hotel Collection are excluded
