60

Saw this advertised as part of their new store opening sale. They claim it is 40% off so seems to be a good deal.

Samsung 870 QVO MZ-77Q1T0BW 1TB SSD, Samsung V-NAND, SATA III 6GB/s, R/W(Max) 560MB/s/530MB/s, 2.5", 7mm, 3 Years Warranty $98.99

  • they were selling Samsung 1tb nvme just 2 weeks ago for the same price.

    • Not everyones PC as the ability to install M.2 drives, many have to revert to using SATA ones

The point is more that this isn't a great deal for an ssd/SATA speeds. Lots of retailers are selling off SSD stock right now and pretending like the sale makes it a good price when it really just brings it to a reasonable price.

Rarely have I seen PBTech ever beat another retailer. Always check computer lounge and 1st wave for better deals: I just picked up a Samsung 970 1TB NVME for $138 on computer lounge (1st wave had it at this price for a few days as well).

        • I don't think there are any other 1GB SSDs that are currently under $100 anywhere in NZ looking on pricespy. I also don't think SATA ones are normally that much cheaper than M.2 ones, and many can only install SATA if you have older hardware. . Plus PB tech do free shipping with their freeshipping code.

          • @nzmax: The interface type shouldn't really be the factor on what's a good price. It should be performance:price otherwise we end up in this situation where we do just that, and say it's okay to spend X much more because it's a different/older interface type when the reality is that the cost between making an M.2 vs SATA drive is no different - I bought both my Samsung m.2 and SATA 500gb evo 860 drives for the same price over a year ago.

These sales are just offloading so they don't end up with new stock with a lower wholesale price than inferior stock most likely.

  • Got one, its a decent price thanks op

Just be aware that the write speed drops to about 50mbps rather than the advertised 500mbps after it fills up the 4GB cache.
So, if you're copying 4GB+ files, expect HDD speeds of writing.

  • Would only recommend one of these for a os shift from a hdd without m.2 support. nvme should be the only consideration for new builds, gen 3 is more than enough.

    • Absolutely. But I do wonder if many people could really tell the difference in speed for normal use. This is discussed at https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=50&topicid=299…, where someone was expecting there to be a more noticeable difference. You can get PCI cards to add M.2 support to an older PC but they seem to be a bit hit and miss in terms of getting them to work. It seems to be far more important to make sure you buy a ssd new than second hand when looking at cheap ssd options.

      • sata vs nvme, no. They are both incredibly fast compared to hdds. Pcie nvme adapter cards I feel are never worth it to upgrade such a old system.

This is a great way to bring new life to an Xbox One X/S. Once you’ve installed a game, all you really care about is read speed, and this blows the stock 5400rpm drive out of the water for that.
