What's the minimum salary to be eligible for platinum?

    • I don't know much about banking, but I'd assume its a case by case basis. Someone who constantly goes into overdraft at 80k would have less chance than someone who has never at 60k. It all depends on the person processing your order about whether to approve or not.

What if you are on the benefit?

        • +1

          Asking the real questions.

        • Majority of providers don’t mind as it’s seen as a steady source of income - provided you can service the debt and your overall assessment is within their lending criteria.

        • they'll lend to most except if you're bankrupt but prob a low credit limit.

    • Varies per person. Approval is based on your overall financial situation, including income, liabilities, outgoings, ability to service debt, financial history, good credit performance and affordability.

This is one of the questions on the appliation form.

Do you earn $30,000 or more per year before tax?

  • +1

Nice. I do have an ASB Visa Light credit card at the moment, so thinking to balance transfer to Farmers Mastercard and get the $200, and then switch back to ASB by taking the True Rewards card and get the 300 True Rewards dollars. This should work eh?

    • Yes this may work. Or you could also apply for the platinum card direct. But check if asb first to make sure you are eligible for bonus and free fees before applying. And make sure you do not do balance transfer between asb cards as this will void the bonus rewards etc.

  • Anyone had any luck getting a promotion like this as an exisiting platinum card holder?

    • Perhaps could call up and ask if there is anything they could offer? Amex offers retention when you say you want to cancel their cards

      • do you know if Amex offers retention if you wanna cancel nearly after a year?

        • They offered me 300 airpoints when I wanted to cancel my Amex airpoints platinum.

    • Yeah annoying as I'm already a platinum card holder but not getting any rewards

  • What's 300 points worth? $300?

    • They aren’t points. They are dollars. One for one dollar.

    • +1

Yes, looks like one point is one dollar. But the catch is you can only spend these at certain stores. Not a bad range of places (Farmers, Mitre 10, Noel Leeming, Rebel, etc.) but worth knowing. Full list of places is here https://www.truerewards.co.nz/partner_stores

      • True rewards can be redeemed 1:1 into kiwisaver also

      • It's better to redeem for gift cards which is a larger variety of stores.

  • +2

True rewards are much easier to use than airpoints for everyday expenses since you can use in BP as well as other partners store.

Also a list of gift card options to expand your options like briscoes and Bunnings.
    https://www.truerewards.co.nz/giftcards/all

    • And you get a True Rewards card which you can use like a credit card in store to use your rewards

  • Anyone know if you can cancel the card prior to the annual fee being applied?

  • +3

Yes. You should get your bonus true reward dollars within 6 months and you have to cancel before the annual fee before 12 month is due if you like to avoid the annual fee.

    • Thanks man!

    • if you cancel the cards, do the points expire? or still usable?

      • They will expire in time, how long? Not 100% sure.

        • +1

          Do True Rewards dollars expire?
True Rewards dollars will expire once they reach the 5th year from when they were earned. As True Rewards dollars are redeemed, the oldest ones will be used first.

          https://www.asb.co.nz/banking-with-asb/true-rewards.html

do note they will expire immediate as soon as you cancel your card, see my other comment. (so use them up before cancelling cards.

      • +1

If you cancel your card. All your true reward points expire immediately. So need to spend all reward points first e.g. Buy a BP gift card at BP to use later if you need fuel regularly.

Applied 8th of Feb haven't got anything back yet…. Not sure it's just me or they've been busy.

    • I applied online and got my card approved within 2 days. Worth following up with them. May need you to submit payslips etc if you do not deposit your salary into your account etc..

      • Yeah I did ask them this Wednesday and they say someone will follow up(noone reach out yet). I can also see they checked my credit score on the same day I applied. Don't know… Maybe too busy. I will check again next week. Thanks for the Intel😄

      • Did you get approved without them calling you? (and also I take it because you have your salary coming into ASB)

    https://www.asb.co.nz/bank-accounts/graduate.html#terms-and-…
Found this as well - $100 if you're aged 18-24 and graduated (NZQA institute or apprenticeship) within the last two years

  • Any idea what '$3000 eligible purchases' actually are? Is it certain stores? Certain purchases?

    • "Spend criteria applies to purchases for goods and services only and excludes cash advances or transactions treated by ASB as quasi cash advances"

Usually gambling, ATM withdrawals are excluded.

  • Do you have to be open a ASB account first before applying for the card? Clicking on the apply now goes to account opening links?

    • I have existing accounts with asb. So not 100% sure. It would appear so with the online application process to open a bank account first. You can apply a free transaction account like streamline account first.

  • When I went through the process I found they need a lot of your financial details. Pretty much want to know everything about your finances and assets you own, our expenses. Far far more than when applying for other cards with other CC providers. It was more like applying for a mortgage.

    • This may be related to new credit requirements by the new govt rules.. I think the process is much easier than westpac though. So all relative.. From memory kiwibank had the easiest process but that was before new govt rules.

      • +2

Very likely it is the CCCFA. I applied for a mastercard last year via another financial institution, and they hardly wanted any info and it was just a 5 minute form to fill in.

      • Yeah indeed, its the new legislation they need to abide by. I wanted to extend an overdraft by a couple of grand and would need to go through all the financial questions as though it was an entire new loan; 3 years ago I extended it by almost 100k (!?!?!!) to cover something at the time and was able to do that over the phone with no questions…lol….times have changed!

    • me and my partner applied… I had a 5 min call. she had 45 min call asking for everything.
we share finances and pretty much earn the same.

I was asked to send them all these documents and things from the IRD with IRD letterhead on it. I just gave up as I didn't have all the information they wanted and would need to contact the IRD for it. IT was far too intrusive and I don't want the bank knowing all of my details like that, especially when I have banked with them for two decades.

        • Same when we applied in 2020, they wanted so many things from us.

  • +1

It’s tough to get a card. 100k plus and couldn’t get either versions. I guess the mortgage sets me back

    • this may be related to the new govt regulations rather than the bank itself?

  • Was at the bank today due to an atm malfunction while depositing yesterday. Tried to deposit the remaining 5k at the counter from yesterday and was told by the bank clerk to not deposit more than 2k because the new rules mean they now might flag my account for it.

    • It is crazy some of these intrusive new laws that are coming in. It is almost like people can't be trusted so that tar everyone with the same brush.
