Please put in contract and its costs in the title.

It says $600 boost on top of trade-in value.

Sample trade-in with boost for iPhone 11 64gb is like getting $1009

    Without boost it is $409

    • Ah gotcha! Wonder if you’d be able to roll up the phone payments after signing with them.

I never liked the idea of getting into contract. If I am looking at a $2000 iPhone let's say, by selecting $40 plan over 12 months makes my pay $2480. Deduct $40/m would cost me $480. So basically I am getting iphone 13 pro for $2000 minus the trade-in phone value.

So all in all, lot of going out of my pocket rather than buying it upfront for $2000 and flipping the old phone on fb/trade me.

Anyone thinking of going for this deal, do your math first. I would highly recommend, this is not worth it.

Not everyone has $2000 lying around, or wanting to go into credit. Contract is how most people get new, expensive phones.

And if you have a business the contract may be tax deductible.

      • +1

If you have a business, and you can deduct the cost of the monthly plan, then the (net) phone purchase should also be tax deductible anyway via depreciation.

Well, my thinking is buy only what you can afford. And try to get the best deal.

But, I agree what you mean.

  • Right now (at the time of typing), there are three used IPhone 11 units on sale on TradeMe - the lowest BuyNow is $650 (the vendor says the reserve is $550 in the comments, but they are really wanting $600 to $650 - and they haven't (at least so far) been willing to drop the BuyNow to $550, so looks like they really are wanting to hold out for at least $600):

That's a piece of junk with the third-party screen and probably only worth $150 at your own risk. Probably as a result of water contamination as a lot of these third-party installations aren't water resistant any more.

      • I agree.

      • Could be - but the value is determined by what people are willing to pay, even though they may be fools, and based on the bid and comments, that appears to be at least $550.

        • I think your find his mate put a bid in for it.

          • @pdevonporf: Not sure if you'd see all the discussion in the Q&A and giving away the reserve (rather than just disclosing it up front), but maybe you know more about it.

            • @Alan6984: It's quite common on trademe to get a mate to bid under the reserve. Red flag, no sales or purchases from this account and sale of the phone fell through once. You would be surprised how many people buy things without reading the description and by disclosing the phone's major fault he's covered himself under trademe ping refunds policy. I sold a pair of earphones once and it was clearly stated on ear on the box and description and when the woman received it she wanted the money back because she thought they were over the ear. I also sold a computer case, and it was listed in 'computer case no power supply' when the bloke received it he asked where the power supply was and he also want his money back.

  • So is the minimum a $60/month plan for 12 months?

  • +1

I saw this ad on fb but didn't bother to post as it's complicated.

Basically you get $600 off if you buy their new iPhone 13 range AND go on their plans (from $58+/month). If you can cancel in 12 months you need to pay the $600 back.

You also need to trade in a phone (selected models only). The oldest iPhone you can trade in is a iPhone 6 plus which they will give you an extra $50 for.

e.g. if you need the plan already then it might be worth it, as the base iphone 13 (128GB) would cost you about $828 after the bonus (or cheaper depending on what you traded in).

It may be worthwhile for some people with good condition 1-3 year older iPhones.

I’m weighting it up and a little confused so may visit a local store.

    For example:
$1,112 Trade In offered for iPhone 11 Pro (includes $600 bonus)

$1430 for new iPhone 13 128GB paid off interest free over 12/24/36 months

    = $318 upgrade

This is pretty cheap to jump 2 years of technology and get a brand new phone (and battery).

However, you then have to consider only Pay Monthly plans above $60/month are eligible.

These are way more expensive than say Skinny Plans or lower tier Prepaid ones. And you’ve locked in for 12 months (or the entire period of the interest free pay off, not sure).

Any thoughts or corrections are appreciated.

    • Oh and to make the math more complicated…

2 Degrees are offering 2 months free Pay Monthly on $60 Plans, brining the first year cost down from $720/year to $600/year.

So if you cancel (or downgrade to $40 plans) after 12 months, maybe it could be a good deal?

Tempting if they allow existing customers to sign up.

My wife has an iPhone 12 and is with 2degrees with no intention of leaving.

Will run the numbers later today

    • Switch to Voda/spark for a month and come back as a new customer

      • Possibly but you lose carry over data.

Telcos have dedicated retention teams really it should be a given that they offer this to loyal customers but sadly it's not..

        • In general, if you have accumulated carry-over 'stuff' then you will continue to do so going forward - there will be exceptions of course, and maybe you (your wife) is in that group, but I would think twice before effectively buying whatever carry-over I had by spending more.

I moved from 2Degrees ($29 pm post-pay I think) to Skinny ($16 per 4 weeks pre-pay) around Apr 2021 if I recall correctly - call it six months / 28 weeks for easy reckoning. I lost all my accumulated carry-over stuff from 2Degrees of course (something like 30GB of data).

As of right now, I have accumulated:

          284 mins
          12.12 GB of data
SMS are unlimited to NZ & Aus

Even if I somehow burned through all that data (say), I could take the $62 I have saved and buy more data that I can imagine using (15 x 4hr unlimited full speed blocks for example), and still be ahead.

          • +1

@Alan6984: Or you could easily go for a higher plan for a month by paying less than buying boost and accumulate left over data.

            • @ace310: Interesting. Do you mean that I could, for example, move to Skinny's $26 plan, and get 2.5GB of data for that period, use, say, 1.3Gb of it, and drop back to the $16 plan with the remaining 1.2GB of that data carried-over?

If so, then that might be even better - it would depend if I needed the data for a short burst or over a longer period I guess.

Can't imagine needing it - they keep giving me blobs of additional data (another 1GB a month or so ago I think), and given I am working from home mostly right now, I don't need much 4G data anyway.

Even if I was going out to clients, almost everyone has WiFi, so the only time I use it is when I'm actually driving.

Thanks for the heads up - I might not need that tip, but I have (hopefully) squirrelled it away just in case!

              Alan.

        • This is true. for one i get 4gb or something from spark for $19 a month no real reason to leave

  • Yeah nah

  • I see the ad for this promotion everywhere and always thought it was a bad deal. If you sell you old phone you can probably get more money to put towards a new iPhone and you won't have to be locked into a contract.

  • +1

This really depends on how you see this deal.

If you spend $19 per month for pre-paid, moving to $60 means another $41 more spending, closing to $500 for a year. The trade-in price they offer to your phone is always lower than what you can sell on trademe, for example, iPhone 11 Pro Max 64GB they give you about $500+, you probably can add another $200 on the trade-in price if you sell privately.

    • +1

For an iPhone 11 Pro Max 64GB on this trade in deal you would get $1167
