I see you calculated the gst price, nice touch. If you're looking for more HDD deals the folks over at reddit.com/r/datahoarder are always scoping out the best deals, here's a 14TB WD Elements, works out at $492 landed https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07YD3G568

    • I was thinking about converting an old PC into a NAS using something like FreeNas but considering the costs of drives, something like this work out to be a better deal, especially if it's just for archiving. I have the 12tb version of the WD Elements and it has been great, no issues so may pick up this 14tb as well. Cheers for the link.

      • Some of the external USB drives have a network port so you can plug them directly into your router, otherwise some routers have a usb port for adding network attached storage.

        • I'm ok with direct attached storage via USB, I was just thinking of doing a DIY NAS as I just have this old PC sitting there and figure it might as well be put to some use.

          • @Guy from Canada: Might wanna consider how much it would cost in terms of electricity to run 24/7 as it's an old PC. Rather plug it in a router or maybe buy a Raspberry PI and run NAS from it.

      • The Fritzbox routers which 2degrees gives to customers have a usb port on them and built-in media server functionality. So you can get one of those secondhand pretty cheap as there's so many around, plug an external hdd into the usb, and bam you have a NAS.
As a side note if you look at buying a NAS, the WD My Book Live external hdd's have some severe security vulnerabilities, something to bear in mind if you're considering buying an NAS.

        • I think I'd would just stick with a dumb external hard drive unit like the Elements line as I don't need any could connectivity.
