$200 Credit for New Customers @ Contact Energy ($350 off in total for Everyday Bonus Fixed Plan)

240
200OFF

For electricity, choose "Basic simple energy" plan. Once the credit comes through (usually in 1 working day), sign up for a fixed plan, such as Everyday Bonus Fixed Plan (yes, you'll get $150 off, making total $350 off if you sign up in a two-step process described above). Everyday Bonus Fixed Plan is fixed until Oct 2023.

UPDATE
The code no longer works for the "Basic" plan. It now only works for "Bach" plan or if you bundle Electricity with Broadband. So you can try signing up for "Bach" and then switching to "Good nights" or "Everyday Bonus Fixed" later. If you want to go straight to "Good nights" or "Everyday Bonus Fixed", use the referal link, you'll get $100 credit and so will the referer, if you stay with Contact at least 30 days.

Referral: random (111)

  • Can we access this if we are currently with Contact, or do I need to jump ship elsewhere?

    Thanks,

    Alan.

    • I'm afraid it's for new customers only. I actually switch out, with the intention of not returning, but then I saw this $350 incentive. I can confirm I got $350 in early August.

For existing customers, you can get $250 by signing up for Everyday Bonus Fixed Plan using code "100THANKS".

      • That's not bad (credit) - I haven't looked at the plan yet though.

  • Website is experiencing technical issues. I feel as though this must be a glitch and they're attempting to fix it :/

  • So correct me if I’m wrong, however you could switch to contact, receive the $200 credit, and then change to a different energy company in 1 month?

    • Yes. I did receive $200 within 1 day of joining, then I joined the fixed plan and got another $150 credit. If I leave Contact now I'll have to pay back $150 to leave the fixed plan. If you're not on a fixed plan then no penalty.

  • So correct me here. You sign up using 200off code and get $200 credit. Later can you sign up for $150 plan with a referral which could be a total of $250 credit. That makes a total of $450 credit with 2 year contract?

    • +1

I signed up to get $200, on an open term plan (1). Then I signed up for Everyday Bonus Fixed Plan (two-year fixed) to get $150 available for that plan (2). You might get $150+$100 using 100THANKS when you sign up for (2) if you wait long enough between (1) and (2). I only waited 1 day.

      • How long enough I need to wait to sign up for the fixed plan (2)?

        • +1

I don't know. You can try waiting until you get your first bill (mine came about 10 days after joining).

          • @sunshinenz: Signed up with 200OFF. I will try to get another $250 ($150+ $100) off after I get 200 credited. Not sure if that will work as I don't have an active account yet.

Someone with simple plan can try it to confirm.

            • +1

@ace310: 1 day after I got the $200 credit I signed up for Everyday Bonus Fixed Plan with code "100THANKS", but I only got the extra $150, not the extra $100.

  • Thanks- I just signed up for this, but probably with the intention of moving to the 'free power 9pm-midnight' plan. I know I won't get the extra $150 with that fixed plan but I think the savings might work out better and it's only a 1 year term. -https://www.cheapies.nz/node/28957

    • Where did you see the one year ? I can’t find anything on it.

      • The 'Free power 9pm-midnight' plan is until Nov 2022, however, the 'Everyday bonus fixed plan' (with the $150 credit) is until Oct 2023.

    • I'm interested in the "free power" plan as well, so I guess you got the "Basic simple energy" plan first with the $200 coupon code credit, and then switch to the "free power" plan after a day?

      • It should work. I joined with "Basic", got $200, then signed up for "Everyday bonus fixed" plan the day after I got $200, and got another $150 (only available to that plan).

  • +1

Is the free credit justification enough to change? Seems like they're a bit more expensive than some of the other power companies.

    • You have to run the numbers for your own actual usage compared to your current provider.

Of course, a better deal might come along next month elsewhere, but that is always true, so I generally don't worry about it and go with the best I can do today.

      Alan.

    • I have posted it in other post but it may better if I share here too

Actually it depends on where are you living. I compare my bill in Jul on electric kiwis with the rate I get on Contact energy and it is saving me $10 a month on basic plan without discount. Btw I'm living in Auckland so it could be the reason.

    • +1

just compared the rate with my electric kiwi bill, it turns out if i switch i will save 40-50 dollors per month with contact (hope my calculation is right) by doing nothing else

      • +1

Electric Kiwi rates are outrageous really and their sign-up bonus is dismal too.

        • +1

i used to think i got a good deal as they offer one free hour of use, just realized i have been ripped off for about 3 years!! Thanks a lot you have saved me a few hundreds dollars

          • @Mark2018: I was with EK for 2 years. Then I got tired of timing the usage, so I checked the market and found I would have paid less elsewhere and not having to do the extra work for the free hour.

Currently my Contact rates (excl GST) are:
            0.1793 per kwh
            1.6800 per day
subject to 2% discount on the Everyday Bonus Fixed Plan plan.

            EK rates are:
            0.2223 per kwh
            1.9900 per day

If I don't do anything the free hour only saves me about 3%; I have to do a lot to get 10%. On 3% saving for the EK free hour my EK bill would be $850 (a year) higher than Contact, or $1700 for 2 years, plus Contact gives $300 extra signup bonus. EK is not fixed, which is nice, except that electricity prices are sure to increase considerably over the next 2 years.

            • @sunshinenz: my EK rate is 0.27/Kwh and daily rate 0.32 both excl GST, i managed to use quite a bit of free power (around 20% worth), but this month bill is still around 580, around 1840 Kwh used.

So if i use contact low usage plan it comes around 490
standard plan is 410 only ouch

thats 170 dollars saving per month!!!

              • @Mark2018: You seem to be on "low user" rates while you should be on "standard user" rates. That change alone will save you a bit already.

                • @sunshinenz: Absolutely! switch alone save me more than a thousand a year, and the joining credit, 3 hours free power after with a plan…..
                  Thanks again

                  • @Mark2018: EK also has "standard user" rates. They ripped you off by putting you on the wrong plan all these years. I thought that electricity retailers would usually contact you if they thought you were on the "wrong" plan given your usage pattern??

                    • @sunshinenz: We got an email from them as below:

                      Happy Anniversary!
Around this time we review your power account to make sure you're on the right plan.
Over the last year, you have used:
                      $$$$ kWh
If you expect to use less than 8,000 kWh in total in the coming year, you may be best to stay on the Low User rate.
If you're expecting an increase in your power use, for example if you're a growing family, planning to work from home, or installing a heat pump, you could be better off switching to our Standard User rate.
If that's the case, get in touch and we can help.
You can only change between standard and low price plans once every 12 months, so if you've changed recently you'll need to remain on your current plan."

            • @sunshinenz: In what region do you live? Are you sure those Contact rates are right?

I have just done a comparison and get the following for that plan:
0.2220 per kwh (0.193 excluding GST)
2.34 per day (2.041 excluding GST)

              EK rates are
0.2256 per kwh (0.196 exlc GST)
2.29 per day (1.99 excl GST)

So comparable, but at least with instant kiwi you get the free hour of power. There is the Contact signup bonus, but excluding that for now.

      • same here

  • What are the rates offered ?

    • +1

It will be different rates depending on your address. There is a huge difference between fixed plans and open plans, lower user or standard user. From experience basically the credit is the higher rates spread out across the contract period.

  • signed up sorted took 5 minutes , thanks

  • Any idea how long this deal is available for? Might do some rate comparing but I still have 2 months worth of credit in my (Powershop) account.

    • +1

200OFF code has been active for couple of months now.

      This was posted here before
      https://www.cheapies.nz/node/28115

But don't go on what I say 😂

      • Haha and I’m the first commenter on the other post. I got bloody amnesia.

    • +1

I'm with powershop also, just a reminder powershop rates shown are included GST and Contact are excluded when you do compare.

I don't really know how to compare this as Powershop have controlled & uncontrolled rates + special rate & standard rate + the rates are different each month, from a quick look it seem Contact is still darer for me

  • When I go to the website I can't see a $200 credit being offered? Where can I see that this is available for new customers? I'm looking to swap from energy online for the last month I am at my rental. That 200 should give me free power for a month

    • +1

use the code 200OFF in the coupon area when you sign up

      • Thanks, I don't know how I didn't manage to see that on this post

  • I’m with EK in Canterbury, low user stay ahead, so automatically tops up $200 and you get $20, effectively 10% off their rate, my rate exc gst is $0.2197 /kWh and $0.32/day, free hour I use around 25%, note I checked the contact 9pm to midnight free power rate and it’s $0.259/kWh $0.30/day, interesting the EK website says $0.2789/kWh and $0.32/day for my area, maybe I kept a better rate when I moved from north island or their rates have increased….

    • How are your rates with EK so cheap, I'm in Welly on same plan, and I'm paying 0.30 per kw, and 0.37 cents per day supply.

      • There would be regional variation, I’ve quoted excluding gst, so maybe yours includes gst, otherwise yeah pretty high rates!

        • Yea mine includes gst, still, the difference is remarkable. Decided to jump to Contact for the 200 credit

  • Can anyone work out how to see what the actual fixed term is?

Everything just says Fixed Term, but makes no mention as to the length of the term. If you download the Terms and Conditions, they just mention that the term is the length of the term.

    • +1

Fixed rate period = Term length.

      • +1

Oh, weird way to do it. So it will be like 2 years and 2 months and early termination fee prior to that.

        • Considering $350 credit and competitive rates for next 2 years does sound good to me. Assuming the rates are most likely to increase in next 2 years.

  • Just joined with a plan to switch in 1 month.. Free 200 dollars yay.. 😜

    • That's what I was thinking join use for a month or 2 and then join elsewhere maybe. rather than being locked in for 2yrs for $150

    • Let us know how you get on. Thinking of doing something similar. Leave Powershop in two months (got $200+ credit currently), join Contact for two months, then join Powershop again as a new customer through the mrs.

Edit. Someone in the previous thread reckons that the 200OFF code has a 12 month lock-in period. Could be because of the contract they selected though.

      • Can't. That would not only be adding terms without mentioning them anywhere (AKA, not terms at all) but also directly contradict the plan's terms: "Basic plan
No fixed term / No break-up fees"

      • I belive it's the contract u sign, I signed for the basic plan which is no fixed term contract

  • Anyone having issues signing up?

It keeps telling me my name doesn't match my license 😒

    • Someone commented on the other thread that there are issues

      • Thank you just went and checked the other thread and mines just gone through. Appreciate the help

  • Those who have joined, could you please comment on how soon you got the $200 and $150 credit?

    • Thanks for posting. How did you get the $200 credit? I signed up and received 2 emails informing me that they are processing my application and switching from my current supplier.

      • Register for an online account using the email address you signed up with, and the account number in the welcome email they sent you.

    • Thanks very much OP. The dashboard shows -$200. Is this the 200off credit? Can't see how much I owe them and couldn't pay from this credit. I also had 2 referral signups, so before I switch to a different plan, just want to confirm the dashboard is showing 200off credit and not the pending referral credit.

      • You'll only get the ref credit about a month after they join (if they still stay with Contact).

Contact will email you if "your friend has joined". As you know, not all clicks convert into a sale.

        • Yes, received the email "your friend has joined". Just wondering if it shows as pending credit somewhere or the credit only appears after a month?

  • Not that I will, but since joining yesterday and downloading the app… Even though my switch is in progress, it gives me an option to request a refund of the $200 credit (already applied to my account, super quick) to my bank account?

Gives the impression that you can take the credit as a refund and run, but for me it turns out their free nights plan is cheaper than EK

    Interesting nonetheless!

  • Seems like the loop hole has been patched :(

    • What do you mean?

      • Can apply the 200OFF code against the no contract simple plan anymore.

        • Bugger

        • Oh well party is over. Believe referral will still work.

    • You still can apply it to the Bach plan. Maybe move to a different plan after?

      • Rates are high

  • Does anyone know how to switch to free night power plan from basic plan? They are still processing my application after a week and I'm still unable to see an option to choose different plan……They are a bit slagging comparing with other providers i used before.

    • if you already have an account number:
      https://contact.co.nz/residential/make-changes#changeplan

      • Thanks Huffboy :)
It's end up called them to change it over cause my address didn't show up. However they send a new offer letter with new plan details and it is different what they told me and a bit expensive (23.7c/kwh VS 24.4c/kwh) for the same plan and low user type. I need to contact them again

the whole experience with Contact Energy is the worst I had so far comparing with other providers I used before (e.g. EK, PowerShop, Flick & Genesis), I have never needed to call real person, everything did online with few clicks……..

  • +1

Can anyone confirm that the 200off code is no longer available? I sent Contact a message to ask and got left on read lol

    • Doesn't work on (found in code network response):

      • Basic
      • Free nights
      • Simplicty bundle
      • Everyday Bonus Fixed
  • I think this code has expired.

  • The code is not expired but they have patched the loophole…. it's only available when you sign up for electricity and broadband together:(

    Damn I missed out.

  • Received 200 credit on simple plan. Had signed up with a referral code before this post. I called in later to apply this code rather than a referral to get $200 instead of $100. This was before they patch the loop hole. Now will wait for my first bill and then decide what to do. Don't know what happened to that referral I signed up with. Not keeping any hopes but will see. Thanks OP.

  • Has any tried signing up with the basic fixed rate plan to get the 150 off then switch to the 3-hour free plan?

    • You'll have to pay $150 to terminate the Everyday Bonus Fixed plan.

  • Is there any issue with signing up for the Bach plan to get $200 then changing to everyday bonus and get $150 more??Thanks

  • Just got my parents to switch from electric kiwi and used the 100thanks referral code. Turns out they dont give you the credit until the second month and it's alot more expensive without the free hour from electric kiwi. The Good night plan is higher rates and no point for people that sleep early. Going to switch back to EK

    • Best to do the maths before deciding / recommending to change.

Take your last 12 months bills, work out the usage / daily charges, and then see what you would have paid if you were on the plan you are considering.

The worst thing is where a provider uses things to make it more complicated and harder to compare, such as the 'hour of free power' (or two or three hours etc). Some providers let you download your usage in 30 minute buckets - that will allow you to do the comparison, or you have to try and estimate I guess.

      Alan.

  • does anyone know if the 350 still works as at 13 September 2021 ?

  • I signed up my home for the bach plan with 200off. They contacted me to let me know that the bach plan is only for second properties, and asked if I would like to sign up for a different plan. I asked to sign up for the basic unfixed/open plan, and they agreed to still apply to $200 credit. YMMV!

  • Contact's support team seemed to have disappeared from the face of the Earth. I got my first and only Email from Contact on the 4th of September, and then nothing. Still no connection after almost 3 weeks.

I send them an Email, they don't reply. Same for Facebook messenger. Just terrible.
