½ Price iPhone SE $374.50, Samsung Galaxy S20 FE $549.50, Oppo Find X2 Lite 5G $399.50 with $60+ Monthly Plans @ Vodafone

60

Thought this looked like a good deal.
There are a few phones to choose from.
For example..
64gb iphone se normally $749, reduced to $374.50 when purchased Interest free from 12, 24 or 36 months on a $60 per month plan.
So over 36 months the phone and plan total cost per month is $67.65, with a one off deposit of $99.
Over 12 months it’s $82.95 per month with $99 deposit.

Apple iPhone SE 64GB - Half Price over Interest Free term: Available until 30 November 2020, when a 64GB Apple iPhone SE is purchased Interest Free on a $60 or above Pay Monthly plan.

Total monthly cost is phone cost plus plan cost, plus an initial $99 deposit. Saving evenly spread over the agreed Interest Free term. Balance of phone cost must be repaid if you exit, transfer or trade down your plan before your Interest Free Term expires, and any remaining Interest Free discount will be lost.

Eligibility criteria and terms apply, see Interest Free and Mobile terms.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals.

It's actually cheaper if you go for the $80 plan for three months because it's half price. Also just saw that these plans are open term and you can cancel whenever you want.

So technically you could sign up for the $80 plan (@ half price = $40) and then cancel after a month so you only pay $374.45 + $40 for one month worth of endless data. Pretty good deal tbh…

      Don't think it's open term?

      In T&C states:
Balance of phone cost must be repaid if you exit, transfer or trade down your plan before your Interest Free Term expires, and any remaining Interest Free discount will be lost. Eligibility criteria and terms apply, see Interest free terms and Mobile terms.

Ohhhh they changed it by the looks of it. During Labour day the terms were that they gave you an upfront discount, however, it looks like they give you a monthly discount now…

        • Yep it has changed, from what I understand it's to stop people from doing exactly this.

The discount is now spread over the length of the interest free period, e.g. if the discount was $120 and you chose the 12 month period then it would be $10/month off the interest free repayments.

          • @konfusd: The legal experts may weigh in here. if the full price of the phone is not mentioned in the contract, there's probably nothing that Vodafone can do to recover the costs back from you. I remember reading something similar for the 2 degrees Huawei P30 promo. A lot of those who bought the phone cancelled it the day they received their phones and still managed to hold the phone with them without having to pay the remainder.

If you stick to a $19 prepay and buy outright
    1100 + 19 * 36 = 1784
+ Have the freedom to move to better deals
    + Not stuck on Contract
+ Not with Vodafone who are a nightmare
    - Not everyone can live on $19 prepay for whatever reason

    Going via this deal
    374.50 + 60 * 36 = $2534.50
+ Get a plan with 12GB data versus 1.25GB on prepay (but Wifi everywhere so meh)
    - Spend $2160 over 36 months to save $374.50, difference of $1476 to a $19 prepay (83% of the entire cost of the above)
    - Locked into a contract for 36 MONTHS aka 3 years. The iPhone 8 & Samsung S8 was released in 2017 for perspective.

I've always seen these contracts as just paying more in the long run to get the phone you can't even afford, so you're living beyond your means anyway and not saving yourself money. Is there any other benefit to it? Genuinely would like to know

A better comparison is choosing the lowest interest free period of 12 months, which ends up as $1095 total cost. In that case is it much better value as you pay the equivalent of the RRP with essentially free data, calling etc for a year.

For me the value of these deals is IF (which has been the case in the past), you have been able to cancel the open term contract and still retain the phone discount which has made some phones incredible deals.

    • Yep the best plan is to buy last years model at half price.

  • I wonder if spark will counter offer that

  • I’m quite interested in why people choose pay monthly rather than much cheaper prepaid plans? Any comments?

    • I think that’s because I’m a low user?

Probably business use/ people who need huge amounts of data.

        • I always think that the amount of data can be reduced. For example, reduce streaming by downloading using wifi and play off line. That’s just easy way to save big.

@hhan7: Some people value different things. $60 a month is around $2 a day. It's worth it to some people, just like how $5 lunches are worth the convenience to others.

    • I used to survive on a $16 monthly plan, but now, I run a business and use my date alot. I need at least the $40 unlimited data plan now.

      • Skinny offers unlimited data for $36. Which is also cheaper than the pay monthly plans.

        • Fair point - The Skinny one drops speeds after 4.5gb of data usage. Vodafone currently has a promotion where they offer their $80 plan for $40 (for a 3-month period), this has 40gb at full speed and then drops speeds after that. For some people this is important. The best value plan I've had this year was 2 Degrees Group plan, but you need 4 people to sign up at the same time, $40 unlimited everything, speed drops after 40gb. All of the plans have unlimited talk time to NZ/AU. In my current job I use a lot of data and over 300 minutes in an average week.

          • @spanks: So is it fair to say people need that big amount of data for business only? So people choose prepay over pay monthly when they don’t need data for business?

For the Iphone 11 pro $700 off deal https://www.vodafone.co.nz/online-shop/mobile/product-detail…, does anyone know how it works?

The phone is $1599, so $700 off should be $899, yet you still pay $1399 over 12/24/36/months interest free, instead of $899.

    Thoughts?

    • Looks like the $1599 already includes the $500 discount… so you are only getting an extra $200 off by going on the plan.

      • that makes sense thought it's $1599 before discount. Not such a great deal then
