Kogan Dash Cam $44.99 (65% off) + Delivery @ Kogan / Dick Smith

Great dashcam that I purchased about 6 months ago. On sale again! Dash cams are the best way to capture hard evidence in an event of a car accident when you are not at fault.

  • How have you got yours configured?

Permanently powered off ACC setting and set to auto record, looping once SD card full?

    • I have mine configured to loop recording after 3 minutes. I have it plugged into 12V port. It turns on and off when the car is turned on/off. Auto turns on and records when detecting 2g of force.

      • And do you remove or hide the dash cam each time you leave the car, in case of opportunist theft? I would just want to leave it in place to save the hassle.

        • I have a 70mai dashcam which is discreet enough that I don't take it off the windscreen.

Drawback is it doesn't have a screen so I need the phone app to set it up initially. (and use voice control after)

        • Not at all. If anything, its a deterrent to people, they won't know if it's recording or not. Besides, dashcams aren't very worthwhile to break into a car for.

Thanks. I've been keen for one of these, but got scared off after the last discussion on one of these mentioned wiring it up ;)

    • I'm glad. Honestly, theres no hassle setting these up, as long as your car has a 12V port (cigarette lighter port), and you have a spare 8, 16 or 32GB SD card, you're good to go!

Just sharing my 2cents on the use of a dashcam. I think they are great and are a must-have for any motorists. Road incidents happen, whether big or small. There may come a situation where it is necessary to provide evidence to show that you're not in the wrong, and it certainly is useful to have the footage to provide to your insurance company.

I've used many dashcams in the past and while they are great, the problem I've encountered frequently is that the dashcams get stolen easily. I live in an expensive part of Central Auckland and most properties around my neighbourhood do not have a garage. This means you'll either park your car on the street or on your driveway. Either way, people walking or driving past will see your mounted dashcam and break your window to steal it. You end up paying $300+ for window repair, all because of a <$50 dashcam. This happened to me several times, different cars as well. Happened to my neighbours as well. Unfortunately, rich neighbourhoods are a prime target for burglars and thieves and it doesn't help when your neighbours have expensive, exotic cars parked in the open that attract attention.

So, what I recommend is to unmount your dashcam when you've finished driving. When you need to drive, just mount the dashcam again. Obviously, this can be a pain and a habit to get into, but it is worth it as this will save you $200~$300+ on repairing your car window.

Alternatively, use your phone as a dashcam. Your phone has way better camera than a typical dashcam and can do a lot more things, such as automatically upload the recorded video to your Youtube account. Download Autoboy on Android, it's a free app and easy to set up. It's got all the features of a dashcam, and then some. Get a good rear-view mirror phone mount (I bought mine from Aliexpress) and you can double your phone as a dashcam while using it for Google Maps or whatever. Since you'll always see your phone right at eye level where the rear-view mirror is, you will never miss it and will always remember to unmount your phone. If you're someone who is already using a phone mount in the car, this won't change a thing and you won't need a dedicated dashcam for this. Videos are of better quality when they are recorded using your phone and you won't need to spend money on a dashcam.

    • Appreciate your comments, as someone is is still on the fence. Reminds me of when we had a dash GPS unit and had to hide it away each time after use.

    • Thanks, might give this a try

  • Is this dashcam really worth the rrp $129? What other dashcams are comparable to this?

    • +1

Nothing is worth their RRPs ever. And I agree with the comment above - your decent smartphone plus AutoBoy plus mount is great already. Prices of those dedicated dashcams have come down because of this setup.

    • No, it's not worth the $129.But it definitely has some top tier features.

Think of shopping at Harvey Norman; they always have sales, and it would probably be futile to purchase their products at full price.

If you want good dashcams for a decent price, look at the Xiaomi dashcams. Otherwise, use Autoboy on your phone (assuming it's Android). Autoboy is free and your phone is way better than any dashcam because of its superior camera.

Can anyone post a link to a rear view mirror phone mount that they have bought and works well?

    Thanks,

    Alan.

      • This might be a clueless question, but is there any (reasonable) risk of it pulling the rear-view mirror off the windscreen?

I am guessing that the mirror is glued on, but perhaps that is not correct, and it is fixed some other way.

        Thanks,

        Alan.

        • Not sure sorry. It works fine for me and that's all I can say about it. You can always go for a standard windscreen phone mount and mount it a bit high so that your phone can capture the road in front of you (assuming that you're trying to use my method of using your phone as the dashcam). There is also a dashboard mount that you can try, where you can extend the arms and rotate it, so it doesn't have to mount on the windscreen:

As long as your phone can capture the road in front of you, then it should be fine. It doesn't need to be mounted high up or anything. But personally, I prefer the phone at the level where the rear-view mirror is, just because I like to capture everything at that level.
