Oppo R17 Pro $347 @ SmithCity (Usually $599)

160

I’m not a big oppo guy but for the price this phone seems to be a good deal as I’ve seen them range between $599 and $699 at other retailers.

The deal also includes a free SIM card and free Folio case at checkout.

  • I got my first OPPO R11 2 years ago, they are good fast phones with good battery life.
Only thing I haven't liked about it is the color OS and its strict APP control. Keeps putting my VPN app to sleep to save batteries even if I tell it not to.

They supply parts to One Plus. Well they used to anyways, dunno if they still do.

    • Oppo is sister company of OnePlus and they share some components, designs and production line.

  • Also has no headphone jack.

  • Nice phone for the price. Thanks. Just ordered one for my partner. Also looks like it's getting Android 10 update too.

  • Got one for my mum. Thank you :)

  • Why does the website say this has 6GB RAM, but google says this has 8GB ram

  • Cheers, was able to get a price match from NL

    • Still you get extra leather case and a sim card from Smithscity

      • Don't need a sim card and didn't have to pay for shipping since I have a NL next to me. The case isn't really worth that much and the phone already comes with a case. Fly buys on top of that so decided on NL :)

  • How does the Oppo line up work? Is this the flagship phone? Their website is a tad confusing

    • +1

R17 Pro is the flagship phone back in late 2018 and early 2019

      • You sure? Snapdragon 710 back then wasnt even the fastest chip. Oneplus 6T back then was better and they are from the same parent company

        • In all honesty the Redmi Note 8 Pro, which can be had for a similar price is probably a better option - but I think the build quality on the R17 pro is better? I mean i'm pretty sure those phones sold for $999 when they came out.

        • I am saying from Oppo, not other company

          • @bilberry: hmmm even still, that's a bit odd. OnePlus is a subsidary of Oppo and they share a lot of the R&D and materials/hardware, etc. I find it hard to believe that Oppo's flagship at the time only had a SD 710 CPU and yet OnePlus 6T had a SD 845. Surely Oppo wouldn't have listed this phone as a flagship at the time with just a SD 710. Even the price is insane at the time, as it directly competed with the Galaxy S9/Note 9 price range.

Even at the current Cheapies price, it's still pricey at $350. If it wasn't for the GST import tax, I would still buy phones from Aliexpress at a much cheaper deal.

          • @bilberry: Fairly sure the flagship phone in late 2018 was the Oppo Find X not the R17. The R17 may have been just under the flagship.

P.S. Of course if you don't pay GST you will be paying less. But is this actually cheaper on AliExpress. I'm seeing it over US$300 and that's excluding GST,

            • @Nil Einne: US$300 is more than NZ$347

              • @bilberry: Yes precisely. You said you would get a much cheaper deal from AliExpress if it were not for GST, but I don't see how this is the case since as far as I can see, the R17 Pro costs more than NZ$347 even without GST on AliExpress.

BTW, about the flagship thing, it does depend on your definitions. From my POV, if a company has a fancier line launched at about the same time then that's their flagship. Some may consider this a flagship as well, I think it was their second fanciest at the time https://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/oppo/r17-pro/649631/

                • @Nil Einne: P.S. It occurred to me with the COVID-19 epidemic in China that maybe now is not the best time to be looking at prices on AliExpress and I'm lazy to try and check the history. Still I'm unconvinced this phone is cheaper there. Of when there are these significant reductions that isn't really the case.

    Looks like its done.

  • I've never used ColorOS or any Oppo phones before, but have used OnePlus and Xiaomi devices and love them. I'm an Android enthusiast and have used many different phones before, rooted, etc. Just wondering for those who have used this phone or other Oppo devices before, how are they in general and how is ColorOS in general? I've read a lot of bad reviews about it, tons of bugs, etc.

Moreover, I've been researching into Oppo R17 Pro and there's like no support of it whatsoever. No support on XDA or other forums. There's a tutorial on installing TWRP and rooting the device, but that's about it. Seems like a dead phone that has no devs or community behind it.
