  • I was under the impression that even if Ryzen 3 uses AM4 slot, board manufacturers such as Asus recommends against using older boards in this instance. They may just be wanting to sell new boards however until full compatibility is reviewed/tested there may be some risk in pre purchasing boards for this purpose. All of the board manufacturers are anticipating a huge uptake of Ryzen 3 and have announced many many boards for this purpose.

Also the price difference/Pricespy is due to it being re-manufacturered (whatever that means, probably not good though).

      Hi SeniorMouse,

In terms of 're-manufactured', it may mean that the board was pulled from the line due to a Quality Control check, then sent back through to part of the factory that fixes minor issues, tested again, and sent out as 're-manufactured'.

If so, in theory, it will be as good as any other brand new board.

Having said that, it might be something else!

If you are buying for personal use, then the CGA applies, but I have never dealt with ExtremePC, so no idea how easy it would be to get them to replace or refund if you had a problem board - others may be able to comment on that.

      Alan.

      • That would be the best situation if the board you end up with was pulled from QC and fixed for minor issues.

But it could also be as bad as the board was dead during someones warranty and they replaced them with a brand new board and the broken board went to get fixed and replaced with either brand new or used parts until it meets the manufacturers requirements.

CGA is nice but I've also found it to be kind of BS since the store can easily just deny it. They basically can ignore you until you take them to one of those dispute tribunals which costs $$$ and time. Happened to me at Noel Leemings a few times where I was basically just told that they don't do repairs so its not their problem.

        • I'm not sure about motherboards, but a company I used to work for; when a customer returned something, if it couldn't be fixed easily via a 3rd party then it would be written off as it was too costly to send back to the factory, diagnose, repair, test and then send back out as a 2nd.
I expect that to be the case for this price point, so it makes more sense to repair while it is still in the factory but I could be wrong.

I also think the point about the new CPUs not being recommended for the older boards is a bit of a scare tactic (I'm sure they said the same thing about 2000 series). It might become a factor for the higher TDP CPUs in some outrageous scenarios (maximum possible config on the board), but for the average person I don't believe it will be a problem.

And you are correct about not supporting the new series CPUs out of the box, but if your not after the latest and greatest, I would expect some very cheap 2000 series CPUs to become available in the next few months (both new and used) with the advantage of having an upgrade path to the 3000 series in the next few years if you so wish (I expect the DDR5 series stuff to be hugely expensive, so now could be a very good time build something to last a few years until economical to upgrade again).

          • @Toddy47: Same here - we would never send an individual one-off issue back to China (say) - it was just way too costly. We'd just test ourselves, and if it was faulty as claimed, replace and bin the faulty one.

Even if we had a whole batch that were faulty in some way, we still wouldn't send them all back. In that case, one would go back, get tested, and the whole batch replaced by the factory free-of-charge, and we'd thrown out the faulty ones.

            Alan.

  • How do you know if this will use the new AMD CPU's?

    • +1

AMD released a compatibility chart. X470 and B450 chipsets are compatible with Gen 3 Ryzen CPU while the 1st Gen Ryzen motherboards are more uncertain and would be up to the Board Partners to decide if they will support it with a bios update.

That being said, you would 100% need a ryzen gen 1 or gen 2 cpu to be able to flash the newest Bios update for this motherboard. It will not work out of the box on a ryzen gen 3 CPU.

  • Did anyone buy this board? There is still one available, what bios version did it have?
