  • Excellent hardisk for NAS, I've been using this running on Synology NAS.

  • I've had two Seagate drives fail on me. I can't really put my trust in them anymore, I wish I could though.

    • +1

You're gonna get drives fail on you no matter what. I've had all brands with varying levels of reliability. People who say WD are better than Seagate are purely anecdotal. You'll find others which say the opposite is true.

Let's face it. If you bought two WD drives that failed you're gonna say the same thing about WD. If you had bought 100 drives and had half of them fail within a couple of years then your statement would carry more weight.

Reality is that a hdd has mechanical moving parts, generate heat and will fail no matter what. If you change your mindset that a hdd is only as good as the manufacturers warranty then it helps to be brand agnostic and just expect a drive to fail within 3-5 years and buy another.

      • That's a good point, but personally I believe that there is proof that some particular drives from both the leading two manufacturers have a tendency to fail, this is a figure that changes often.
But when the price difference too small to care I believe that it's always best going for a Western Digital hard drive

    • Interesting read this is, I guess everyone who runs a test like this will always have people disagreeing with the techniques and procedures they took though right?

      • True, but if you're gonna hold tests and publish results, then they have to be as neutral as possible to eliminate other external and variable factors. It's a fundamental rule of testing. Ceteris paribus.

I'm not 100% disagreeing with the results, but there's a healthy amount of skepticism to be had when the results are published by a company who's in the business of selling cloud storage. In the interest of full disclosure, they should at least publish their test conditions and setup (or perhaps they got a cash handout from a particular hdd manufacturer to skew the results).
