A router for 679 man it better make breakfast in the morning.

It's got the latest wireless "AD" protocol and has 7200mbits worth of total bandwidth. Plus it has a hugely fast CPU for a router, which is why it has a Plex server embedded for 1080p transcoding.

Routers are pretty important when you have a fast connection of 30mbit or higher, and have multiple devices/users in your household.

I've got an Asus RT-AC5300, and I paid $500 for it, but worth every cent because of the speed, range, and the effect it's had on my gaming latency. Granted it's not for everyone, but there are reasons why 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT and Merlin exist. These routers have the CPU/RAM to be able to take advantage of those extra features like multiple VPN client profiles, and policy based routing.

      • Good write up thanks. My limited household needs are happy with the Huawei modem from Bigpipe even sorted how to stream movies off a usb connected HD to any laptop in the house. But yea if you're a tech heavy user then this is the way to go.

      • I just run ethernet to my gaming rig. No need for expensive wireless capabilities.

        • Agreed. Ethernet > Wireless. But I didn't wanna go through the hassle of laying CAT6 cable in my house (i dread confined spaces and don't wanna pay someone to do it), and our household has infinitely more wireless devices than wired. I was getting wifi deadspots on the 5ghz band in my house with my old Huawei HG659b, and whenever someone else started streaming, my gaming pings would go to hell. So upgrading my router solved a few problems at once - QoS, MU-MIMO, range, etc.

        • @Jaxson:

I've been with bagpipe for 4 months and had that modem since, and its worked out great. No problems at all, but my minimal needs might not tax it and give it problems. What was wrong with yours?

I understand what you mean, but for $679 I would think a better investment would be a decent security appliance, a decent switch and 1 or 2 AP's.

I would imagine that most of the 7200mbits of bandwidth available on the R9000 is wasted as I've yet to see an AD device and very few devices use AC, with most still using 300-450mbit N.

Therefore I would think most people (that are looking at buying a device such as this) would be better off having multiple AP's around the house to load-balance and provide better signal.

        • Yeah, like I said - it's not really for everyone. Including myself, hence why I stuck with AC.

There's more AC devices than you think. Phones, Tablets, and pretty much any decent Intel 4th gen notebook onwards will have integrated AC. Even all the Intel NUCs have wireless AC as standard now. It's probably more for those that have invested in full wireless (e.g. renters). Imagine a flat full of 5 male flatties who all love to leech, game and watch movies @ 4k. Then this suddenly becomes a viable option.

Adding repeaters adds an extra hop each way, and makes traffic half-duplex. So this is gonna have an adverse effect on gaming.

        • @techhit: so just cap their speed and let the QoS sort it out?

        • @justaddwater:

No such option in the huawei hg659b
