  • Where have people booked to out of curiosity?

PS: Remember combine it with this https://www.cheapies.nz/node/7976 and travel further :)

    • We are seriously considering taking the kids to Vietnam, just working out if the dates work.

  • +1

If you're making a connection at KL, make sure you allow plenty of time between flights as the KLIA2 terminal is massive with regards to walking distance. Air Asia gave me a transit pass at KL but technically you're supposed to clear customs and immigration, then go back in again.

Dont worry about the gold coast connection however, it's the same aircraft.

    • Thanks for the tip. I was so confused with the 1 hour layover. :P

      • One more thing: If the folks at KL tell you to clear customs and then go back in e.g. you have checked baggage, you'll need to check-in AGAIN at one of the kiosks the check-in area, once you cleared customs. AFAIK the "self check-in boarding pass" you printed at home is not sufficient, and you'll need to print a proper boarding pass at the kiosk. the kiosks close 1 hour (more if you have checked baggage) before departure, after that and you'll be stranded in KL.

Air Asia is a very slow and cumbersome way to fly if you have checked baggage. Their 7kg carry-on allowance is absolute peanuts, which means you'll probably need one of these.

    • Check out their Fly-Thru service. 8MYR to get your bags checked through (Which I assume also means being given multiple boarding passes like most airlines do)

      • Fly-Thru is not available for all flights.

        • I see, cheers, not sure of the exact details of it.

  • AirAsia is point to point, means you have to take your luggage out and re-check them in again. Some of the pilots are from the military, and they tend to reverse and fly off in a hurry (not like eg AirNz who takes ages to back out, do some safety checks, and fly off). And if you're reasonably tall, its better you get premium economy as seats can be quite cramped especially for long distances.

    • Flown with them 5 - 10 times during our trip to Asia, no complaints at all. I'm not particularly tall, 180cm, but no issues with the seats on short flights. They do offer a baggage check through service, called Fly-Thru, it costs about 8MYR per booking, so about $3. I have this for our upcoming trip to Bali through KL, included in our layflat package.

  • Make sure you check other airlines first
I booked a trip to Vietnam yesterday, by the time I added luggage, and a few meals for the kids, plus a plane from chch to Auckland it would have been cheaper to fly air New Zealand or Singapore air.
Air Asia won't refund, and they won't let us change our booking to transit overnight in KL. Starting to put a downer on this holiday!

  • Whom do you guys recommend for travel insurance?

It seems these two are the best??

    • Got a 50% off code for Cigna, GRAB50, brings it down to about the same amount for comprehensive ($150 for our 1 month trip) but also takes half off the excess removal.

      • But how does the cover compare to the two above?

        • Comprehensive is pretty similar across the board. I compared it before purchasing before our long trip last year. They ended up paying out about $10,000 for cancellation of travel after my wife's grandma got sick and we returned home. Also used travel insurance direct in the past, no issues with them either, also have frequent discounts.

    • Maybe have a look at LifeDirect

    • Family have had great experiences with Southern Cross Travel insurance. They seem to be pretty popular and are my go to, seem to be reasonably price when I last compared them too.

    • +1

This is pretty good if you have more than one person needing travel insurance, I have used them many times based on this.
