  • Yeah the oil prices are gone up heaps. Used to get Penrite Tenth Racing for $56. Now $148 retail and $107 when on sale.

I see you also get free limited edition Bar Mat for spending over $70

    • 100% agreed, I've a European car required 0w-20 VW 508/509, a bit hard to find in NZ while I mean decent deal, Repco has this Penrite Enviro+ G4 0W-20 Engine Oil 5L which around $150 on sales, then I just found Castrol EDGE Engine Oil - 0W-20, LL IV, 5 Litres on sales now @104.99, I believe this maybe new added which seems a great deal, I just brought one for next year oil change, plus a free bar matt, why not :)

  • Just a friendly note, not all 5W-30 Edge oils are the same.
The one listed for $70 at supercheap is NOT suitable for diesel engines with DPF i.e. product code 3421196.

This product code: 3432979 is at $95 is suitable: https://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/p/castrol-castrol-edge-engi… - BUT it isn't stocked at Mitre10.

Digging in some more this Castrol MAGNATEC SUV C3 5W-30 Product code 3420556 is suitable for diesel engines with DPF - might be a cheaper option.

    • Thanks for the notes, it's definitely a better one with long life tag, I managed to get one about $70 last time, potentially could last for a bit longer time (about 15mths) to next oil change if you didn't drive that much I would say.

      • I picked up the DPF safe one for my CX-8 for $60 and got a free Castrol Cap last time they had a discount in July this year. I change the oil every 12 months regardless. Don't do many kms annually ever since we got an EV - about 4 yrs now. Prevention is better than cure.

  • Has anyone been using Valvoline Restore and Protect? I'm interested to see how it goes going off YouTube breakdowns/reviews.

    • Second that, pretty keen to hear from NZ users.

Been waiting forever for it to go on sale, Repco and SCA doesn't seem to run promotions on it.

      • When I check a couple times a few months ago, Supercheap had it on 'clearance' sale for quite cheap.

        • Thanks Hamster. You're right they kept the Clearance label the whole time, price wise it's been stuck at $90.

    • I have used it in the past, 0w-20 on a 2017 outlander, it was fine they are both premium fully synthetic oils, tbh the only reason I used it was because it was on sale at the time and Castrol edge wasn't.

I suspect any of the major oils (castol edge, valvoline, mobil 1) will perform similarly as long as it meets your engines API rating and specifications.

      • Could you tell me where you sourced your 0w20 Restore & Protect? I have been hoping to find one in NZ, I have seen they sell them overseas.

        • I think it was either repco or supercheap, but looking at it now they dont have that grade in the restore and protect, maybe it was their synpower i used instead?

      • Yeap but the main hype around it is the cleaning of your pistons/engine. From the video I saw it done a really good job of it.

    • Yes I currently use it through my mechanic. I specifically asked for it, and he said he actually started using it himself on his vehicles after researching it so has it in stock. I have a Prius, so it probably wasn't that unclean anyway but it a good fully synthetic oil anyway and the cleaning can be preventative. My mechanic said he used it on his Subaru, and he noticed a huge difference, after his first oil change the oil was black from all the cleaning. Usually they recommend the first oil change is a bit sooner than usual depending how much build up in the engine as it is gentle but effective.

      • I've got a first gen RAV4 I'm keen to run it through. Thanks for your input.

  • A lot more expensive than a deal a few weeks ago
    https://www.cheapies.nz/node/56616

    • Different line of oil though, magnetic is probably fine for almost everyone but edge is a more premium oil plus 4l vs 5l

this is not as good as sales we have had on this oil in the past though

      • Yeah this is a premium line, and isn't a terrible deal at all IMO considering how much oil prices have risen.

10 odd years ago I used to have a couple of cars that liked 10w60, and this Castrol Edge was typically the best deal on it but still around the $90 mark if I recall (some of the other brands were much more expensive again).

Also bear in mind normal Magnatec is semi synthetic (or 'synthetic technology' or whatever Castrol insist on calling it on the bottle that is slightly confusing). I literally just did an oil change yesterday with some Magnatec I had in the garage, this Edge product is a much higher grade for appropriate applications.

    • Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 - 4L is only part synthetic hence why it was cheaper

  • Good thing I have like 20l of oil I hoarded over time when the Magnetic semi-synnie was like $30 for 4l

    • Just a friendly reminder, engine oil does have an expiry date, normally would be 4 or 5 years (unopened, if not well sealed then expired faster), you actually can find it under the bottom, like a clock-style date code, and I would consider the oil should be used one year before the expiry date.

      • Cheers, I have 3 cars so 20L is only like 2 years worth anyway
