Is there anyone still can find the stater pack from Kogan website? I bought one last month, but can't find anymore this month.

  • Looks like we might have to switch to 2degrees and do the carry over trick… will see what Black Friday brings I guess

    • Sounds like more hassle to me….

      Kogan Bigger plan 150GB = $400/year, so around 12.5 GB a month.

2 Degree 10GB plan for $45/month or $540/year and you get less data…..

But that's my maths, keen to understand what you mean you the carry over trick?

      • and that's without any discounts, I'm going to wait for Black Friday

      • The carryover trick is from @bigcheese

You could join 2degrees Pay Monthly Prepaid.
https://www.2degrees.nz/mobile-plans/prepay - click on Monthly plans.

Take out the $60 month plan which gives you 50GB of carryover data.
After a month change down to the $8 month plan with 150MB carryover.
This would give you 51.65GB for the year (initial 50GB plus 150MB x 11 months) at an average of 4.3GB per month. Cost would be $148 ($12.33 per month on average).
As a bonus you also get 7.5GB if you are a new customer and it also comes with voice, txt and hotspotting.

If it ever looks like you are going to run out of data you could upgrade again.

        • Just to clarify, I'm not the one who discovered this - it's been mentioned quite a few times on this site.
There is also a fortnightly option for $34 per fortnight that gives 40GB per time that can be used ($68 for the first month and 80GB of data). After the first month then downgrade to the $8 plan.

It makes a cheap average price per month and being prepay you can cancel at any time.
The downside is that you need to spend a relatively large amount upfront to get a chunk of carryover data and the cost savings will be lost if you cancel relatively soon after signup.

Using the monthly plan an example, this is what it would look like for your total and average spend per month and available data depending on when you cancelled.
Cancelling after the second month you would have spent $68 at an average of $34 per month. On the other hand, if you did this for a year then it would average only $12.33 per month. This assumes you don't change from this plan or the price goes up.

          • @bigcheese: Was thinking of doing this but my wife makes lots of calls so the 100 minutes of calling time offered on the $8 plan wouldn't work for her.

          • @bigcheese: Do you know if these plans support data sharing?

            • @Jizah: I have no idea.
I'm not with 2degrees so this is not something I have used myself. I'm just explaining the method.

For data sharing I presume you would need one of the Group Plans but I don't actually know sorry.

            • @Jizah: It supports

          • @bigcheese: I remember you have to keep one active plan otherwise you cannot use the data? I could be wrong

  • I tried looking for it last week but no luck. Hope it comes back after current 50% off promo.

    • I see they have now changed the plans too.
      https://koganmobile.co.nz/our-plans-have-changed/

No longer small, medium, large, extra large on the 365 day plans.
Now big, bigger, biggest with a lot more data and price to match.

      • Yep Cheapies this new move by Kogan Mobile NZ to a different set of larger data blocks plans , but far higher pricing looks like bad news ahead for us……

        • Kogan and enshitification; name a more iconic duo

        • I can't remember the last time they changed their pricing, whereas every other telco seems to up the price every year.

      • less data on the Bigger plan and pay more!

        • I'm keen to see what specials they run on these plans…..surprising they didn't offer any on launch

      • Large/Bigger plan was the one which had most traction and CC favorite which became more expensive so that's not a good sign.

  • Again Cheapies we need the be checking our details on this 2degrees scheme idea to ensure your comparing an orange to an orange not an apple : as has been commented on that $8 prepaid plan for 11 months over the 12 months period only has a small number of phone calls minutes included. It's the next up $15 2degrees prepaid plan that has unlimited NZ and Aus standard calls included. So total on that scheme jumps to $225 per 12 calender months ! (Yep one good point is with 2degrees its "per calender month", not the sneaky little "28 days" trick with some other providers….😳).

    • It comes down to what you want in a mobile plan.
My original comment was from this post in regards to a data only plan, so it's not as appealing for a lot of talk use.
It's definitely not a one size fits all so you should definitely look at all options depending on what you want in a plan.

      • (Good reply point Bigcheese, agreed. :) ).

    • Based on the link - https://koganmobile.co.nz/our-plans-have-changed/

Your data will be added on the same date each calendar month, rather than every 31 days.

  • I just renewed my Kogan yearly Large plan yesterday and can no longer send to short SMS numbers.

    • Is it a premium shortcode? ie it would normally cost money to respond to? I had that issue before and they explained because it's a shortcode that charges differently to a standard SMS, it isn't included in the bundle. and because Kogan isn't a "credit" based Prepay it would have nothing to deduct from, so therefore just doesn't work.

The shortcodes that don't charge, should work though

      • Wife also wasn't able to reply to a shortcode last week. It would fail instantly. We tried at different times on 2 consecutive days but it would fail. After checking her message history yesterday I noticed she last successfully responded to the same shortcode number 2 weeks prior.

So what was working looks like it has now stopped.

        • I'd suggest messaging the Kogan mobile team via chat and asking them to investigate.

      • Yeah it's a chargeable one but they used to work with Kogan. When Kogan first started their plans in NZ they didn't work, but they have for a couple (maybe more) years.
