I'm surprised people actually buy this.
2.7/5 star rating. Doesn't look good on its own, and doesn't sound better than a premium earbud either, so this is a gimmick at best. How is this even worth the $174 RRP price tag? I wouldn't even touch it if it was $5.

Yeah, I bought the 780NC for my daughter a couple of weeks ago and got a pair of these for free and she's not even interested in opening the box. I can't really think of a use case for them other than annoying the shit out of everyone nearby since they have no sound isolation at all.

Only thing would be running or cycling where having ears not plugged is useful. Having used bone conduction it's good but a bit of a pain if you also wear sunnies and both are fighting for that prime real estate km the ear to hold them on your head.

Positive reviews can be bought or faked, but people rarely go out of their way to fake negative reviews. Negative reviews are usually more genuine and, in many cases, more useful. When researching a product I want to buy, especially if it has only a small number of reviews, I tend to focus more on the negative feedback and look for patterns in what multiple people are reporting.
Even when a product is popular and has a high overall rating, I still wouldn't blindly trust the reviews. A few years ago, I was comparing either a Ninja or Nutribullet blender. Both are well-known competitors in the market, but the Nutribullet had a recurring issue where many users reported that the blender would fail after around a year due to internal component problems. Initially, people had no issues, so naturally they left positive reviews. It was only later that the problems appeared.
The bigger question is: how many people actually go back and update their reviews? Most people would simply claim warranty, replace the product, and move on rather than spend extra time updating their review. Leaving a review in the first place already requires effort, and expecting people to return later and revise it is even less likely.
Another issue is that many people simply don't know what they're buying. Some people spend money impulsively and buy whatever is marketed well, which is different from someone who has plenty of money and simply doesn't care about wasting it. It's similar to the other Cheapies post where someone shared a gaming laptop that was fairly average. Just because a product has "gaming laptop" in the name doesn't automatically make it a good gaming laptop. But because it's on sale, suddenly people become interested.
I also wouldn't put much trust in reviews on JBL's own website either. Reviews hosted directly on a manufacturer's own website should always be taken with some skepticism, since they control what gets displayed.
Since this product isn't particularly popular (hmm I wonder why), there aren't many reviews available to get a reliable overall picture. I did find that Harvey Norman has only four reviews, averaging 3.3 stars, which isn't good. I also looked through a few Reddit discussions, and the common complaint was that the sound quality is underwhelming and users need to increase the volume, which mostly just makes the treble louder rather than actually improving the overall sound.
But hey, people can buy whatever they want and make poor financial choices. Not my circus, not my monkeys.

A pair of decent, branded polarised sunnies cost at least $30 bucks.
Reviews online are better, I don't put much faith on NL reviews unless there's a decent sample size.
A quick TradeMe shows that market value is around $70 at least, that will drop but I'm sure it will be easy to get my money back if I don't like it. Play w/ it then flip it..- 0
Right, but the JBL isn't even polarised, and it doesn't really look good compared to proper designer sunglasses, so what's the point?
If I want a good pair of sunnies, I'd happily spend $200+ on a reputable brand, even knowing that many of them are made in the same factories in China as cheaper alternatives. The difference is the quality of the lenses, coatings, materials, and overall design. The same applies to headphones and earbuds — if I want a good pair, I'm willing to spend the money. In fact, I already do and have been for years.
I own multiple pairs of Ray-Bans with proper lens treatments (polarisation, UV filters, etc.), as well as multiple pairs of premium earbuds like the WF-1000XM5 and Technics AZ100.
Buying something just because it's "cheap" and combines multiple features, while each individual feature is only average, doesn't seem like a smart choice to me.
At best, you'd probably end up looking like one of those people who plays their music out loud in public and annoys everyone around them. What situations would this actually be useful for? Someone mentioned using them while cycling — sure, I can see the appeal there, but there are already good earbuds designed for that. They stay in place during workouts, cycling, and other activities without the compromises.
Again, it feels more like a gimmick than a genuinely useful product.

Unless you’re doing something at the beach that could genuinely damage them, I don’t really see why you wouldn’t wear them for occasions where sunglasses are needed.
And if you really think you'd damage the sunnies, why not just get cheap ones in the $30–$50 range with polarisation and UV protection? And for audio, there are budget earbuds in the $20–$40 range. A lot of people buy those for workouts because they don’t want to wear their expensive earbuds where their sweat could ruin it, which I can understand.

Also be good for taking calls on the beach, i hate using my ph there as im paranoid about sand salt and sunscreen ruining it

Cheap sunnies with polarisation and UV filter can be found for like $45 or so. I have a pair that's $45 and I use those when I don't want to scratch my Ray-Bans in certain situations. They're still gonna be miles better than the JBL, which doesn't even have any polarisation filter.
For earbuds, you might need better foam eartips. Look at Comply or Spinfit ones, those are cheap. Or just use an earphone instead of earbud, those should fit comfortably and they're cheap as. I think even an Apple earphone that's wired will do fine, you'd hardly lose them if it's wired and around your neck or something, I dunno.
I've read reviews about the JBL's audio quality and they're not good. I'm doubt you'd use this frequently and it'd probably just collect dust. But whatever man it's your choice anyway.

Aside from very niche use cases (which I personally still wouldn't use this product), I think the only reason to get this is to flip it on marketplaces and make some quick bucks.

I wouldn't worry.
I looked and thought "surely these will piss off the people around you." So check out a few reviews to find this definitely isn't an issue…because the wearer can barely hear them anywhere there is too much ambient noise (I e. Most places you will wear sunglasses), let alone anyone else.

Very strange, I checked last night and it was sold out at the $30 price, clicked it this morning and it let me buy at 2 pairs at $15 each. I choose Click to Collect and I just got my order is ready to be picked up email from Newmarket. Last night there were none in stock at Newmarket, only in store in Taupo. I'll let you know if I actually get both pairs today.

Yeah, I only bought 1 because of that, wanted to leave some for others. FWIW I think profit margin is pretty slim, these will probably sell around $60-$70 on TM and not that quick to move (just based on prior sold listings and recent RRP drops).
So maybe making around $30 per pair. I always feel conflicted about resellers, ngl I’ve done it before. There’s definitely a few on people on TradeMe/Marketplace that do the same
