The problem with a lot of these cheaper mini LED tv's is that you don't know if they're edge lit or full array, because there are some companies out there who in the past have done edge lit screens using mini LED's just so they can market them as mini LED even though they're really no different to a normal edge lit screen. You want full array or direct lighting, but with a lot of these cheap tv's they don't offer any in-depth specs, they only give you the most basic of information which always makes the conspiracist in me think that they're trying to hide something.
My rule is that if there's no detailed specs available anywhere online for a cheap tv then I stay away from it.

And what about this one in particular?

This is the issue with these tvs, there's no manual and information is hard to find on exactly what you are buying.
This is the last time it was on sale so might be some members who got them that can help you.

@kevin404: I wouldn't believe what ai says about this TV unless it gives you a reference link that specifically says that. I asked gemini and it's just using product page on the warehouse as a reference which definitely doesnt have that info.

Gemini says this model (JVC 55 JV5524M) is meant to be full array.

Did it cite any sources? I just find it weird that no one can find any info on this model yet AI somehow magically could. When I asked AI it also replied saying that this model uses a full array, what it said exactly was -
'No, the JVC JV5524M is not edge-lit. It features a Quantum-Dot Mini LED display. Mini LED technology uses a full array of thousands of tiny LEDs directly behind the screen (Full Array Local Dimming) rather than placing lights only at the edges of the panel, allowing for much better contrast and localized dimming'
and then gave a link to a Warehouse Stationary page that didn't say any of that. And the info is wrong, because mini LED isn't always full array it can also be edge lit, as you can see in the answer it gave me when I asked if mini LED could be edge lit -
'Yes, Mini-LED displays can be edge-lit. However, this configuration is much less effective than traditional, full-array configurations. By placing smaller LEDs along the borders using a light guide to distribute light, manufacturers achieve a thinner profile but sacrifice the precise contrast control Mini-LEDs are known for.'
and it then gave 3 sources which were 2 articles and a Youtube video explaining the various lighting technologies, the following video titled "Mini LED TVs in 2026: Is Your Backlight Lying to You? Demand Full-Array Local Dimming." might be worth a watch for some people
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWiMrSU9gQU&t=9sSo AI says that Mini LED's are always full array in one answer and then fully contradicts itself by saying that Mini LED's can be edge lit in another.
This is why you should still do a bit of your own legwork instead of solely relying on what AI tells you.

Ok that's interesting. I just assumed mini-led displays always used fald. It would explain how these display are getting so cheap now if theyre just scamming us with edge lit. If they gave us the number of dimming zones that would give us a clue but, as you rightly point out, we dont get any real specs at all. Oh well, maybe someone will get one and let us know how it is.

Good idea. If someone does own one of these they could put a dark image on the screen and then look at it in a darkened room and it should be pretty easy to tell if it's edge lit or not. That would be neat if someone could do that for us, maybe even take a photo of it.

Yes you're absolutely right , JVC does not exist it's a made-up brand now, these TVs are generic they are made under many brand names and this TV is made for the warehouse and using the JVC brand because that's what the NZ market recognises just like Philips .

This one is also tempting. But never heard of the brand. Coocaa 60" 4K Google TV for $399

OOS

UI is snappy with no lag. Contrast is good and deep black (not greyish black). Sound is amazing with built in subwoofer. Definitely a bargain.

Wonder if it's 144hz like the last JVC deal on here.

Yep 144Hz.

Thanks team. Anyone know of some sneaky warehouse or warehouse stationary discounts before I pull the trigger on this?

I would wait for budget QD with Mini LEDs Hisense and TCL makes them but not really cheaper in nz , all other brand have this combination with permium models . I personally find QD + mini LED which have many local zones better then OLED

I always assumed that QD was just a shortened version of QLED for marketing. What's the difference?

Mini-LED is really getting cheap now. I assume these budget miniled's look better than anything else in the price range but the exciting prospect for me is that maybe they will actually last as well. The previous edge lit style of LED TV was prone to overheating due to the concentration of LED's along the edge but that shouldnt be an issue for these.
