  • Info about what those points are actually worth:
    https://www.moneyhub.co.nz/american-express-membership-rewar…

    • Based on what that sites says
20,000 Membership Rewards points can be redeemed for:
$100 credit on your card, or
      133 Airpoints Dollars, or
10,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer points (which is enough for Jetstar flight from Auckland to Queenstown).
      +other options

      • ^ readers should 10x these numbers, because the deal is 200,000 points rather than the 20,000 points the link discusses.

  • The points used as credit also goes 50% further if used at the list of semi fancy restaurants. Arguably the best bang for buck if you were going to go there to use the twice yearly credit/rebates (on gold card and plat) you can use the points for the actual bill.

    1000 pts = $7.50
    20000 pts = $150

Lounge accces on the plat card is very good,

    • I don't really understand the dining credit despite reading the ts and cs. If you use the card and redeem points they issue $150 credit onto the balance as a rebate? How do you redeem the points though?

      • I've done it for 2 years never had an issue.

The 2x dinning credits are just applied to the card (1 per 6months)

The cost at the restaurant is still on the balance. You later reddem for cash and it's a bonus rate of 1000pts = $7.50 (up from $5 at other stores)

  • $850 annual fee is crazy

    • $1000 of credit in your first year makes sense. Imagine you would have to work hard or travel a lot to get $850 of value without the promotion

      • So people cancel after first year

  • 200000 points = $1333 Airpoints which is not bad if you travel a lot within the first year and use the Accor membership at the same time.

  • Do the referral points differ for each cardholder? I got 75k for referring, and the person I referred gets 200k.

  • Does anyone know if I can still get the referral bonus if I already have a different Amex card?

    • "For the avoidance of doubt, if you already have an American Express Card, you are prohibited from referring yourself for any American Express Card."

      • Oh, I don’t mean referring myself, but I’ll use a different member’s referral code to apply. I already own a different Amex card

  • I've read through the Ts & Cs. At the top of the page it says:

"Successfully refer a friend and you could both be rewarded"

I cannot see any mention of how the referrer would be rewarded. Am I missing something?

  • They will take your bonus back if you cancel the card within the first year?

  • Can we convert the 200,000 Bonus Points to velocity frequent flyer points?
