      I've not - would like to. Random fact is their science and tech museum looks like a tornado :P

      But also - food opportunities!!! Big part of what I look for in travel.

      China is cheap. If you know what you are doing, can take a Didi into Haikou city ($15 NZD return trip), stay all day at a 24-hour spa with all meals included etc. for $50-100 NZD, or $135 NZD including the room to sleep.

          China is just a lot different to other countries. Need the main apps of Alipay and Wechat. And also Amap for navigation.
          Most things can be done through those apps with a NZ number. You just need a Chinese number for most of the other good apps. Meituan/Dianping being the other main app for food delivery and cheap restaurants/activities. You can also buy things (mainly cheap restaurants/activities) through Chinese Tiktok (Douyin) - just might need to download it through the Chinese app store which you can get on an Android device. And Chinese Ai (Doubao) for translation downloaded from the Chinese app store.
          Takes a bit of research/work and some practice though.

      I visited Thailand recently via Hainan with a stopover at Haikou. It's just a large waiting area closed off from the rest of the airport. There is a good restaurant upstairs which is free but you have to register your details, flights etc. to get the voucher. Even at 5:30am they were open and cooking fresh meals.     Having the same issue with these examples where Hainan directly isn't presenting the same flights shown here via their website. Last time I booked direct just fine.

    I flew this route a few months ago.

    A few things to note that they only have a few free assigned seats, otherwise it's random at check in or have to pay. Price is dependent on where it is, think I paid about for seat $30NZ (but payment is in USD) for AKL to Haikou each way to make sure I got a aisle seat. They don't have an NZ phone number so they expect you to call some other international number. I did use their chat support and they were quite helpful, the process required someone to call me back to confirm my seat selection and send me a dodgy looking email and dodgy looking link to pay for the extra. One of my credit cards rejected the payment but got there in the end.

    Auckland and Bangkok airports don't have kiosks for you to check in at, so you have to stand in the queue with everyone else. Many of these passengers take a while to process as have a lot of luggage, so definitely get to the airport 3hrs before check in. Bangkok a little more if wanting to get the tax refund if doing shopping.
    Food was pretty average tbh.
    Their entertainment was very limited, so download a few episodes on to your mobile or tablet.
    Internet on board is paid in RMB and limited as seems protected by China firewall. Cheapest package allows for wechat.
    Basically no alcohol on the planes, I did manage to get one wine in a paper cup otherwise expect water, juices and coffee/tea
    Haikou airport the layover was pretty comfortable but not much to do for 4 hours, some semi comfortable plastic recliners. Plenty of charging spots. Can go to the info desk and get a voucher to get small amount of food and drink at the one open place, I got a half sized can of beer and a meal.
    On the plane they try and upsell more expensive seats, and also walk up and down with cartons of cigs. Everything is in RMB so I had no idea what the conversions were and staff didn't know either.
    Security to get in at Haikou was pretty thorough, full pat down. They were really concerned about powerbanks so make sure they are clearly labeled, they seemed iffy about my Samsung 20000mah one as it's nearly easily readable, but they did let it through.

    Overall I would probably pay for another airline in future for a few extra dollars.

    Hope this helps people.

    Actually just remembered, booking through a 3rd party website prevented you from changing seats online and required support. I used agoda. I think if you book directly with Hainan airlines you can manage the booking online

      Good info, thanks. Out of curiousity, what, if any, other Chinese airlines have you flown with before? That sounds like a pretty good experience compared to others we have used in the past.

          Fair enough. Travel in China is an experience, you sort of just get used to it. Lots of security checks, even if it's mostly just theatre/deterrence.

          The powerbank restrictions are a relatively new rule (must have CCC stamp), enforced pretty strictly, and the websites are almost always shit when accessing from outside the country/app ecosystem.

      China security was pretty intense, they were very worried about lighters, we accidentally had one in our carry on from BKK and they took it and a bottle of hand sanitizer off of us telling us it was alcohol, so I told him to enjoy it.

      Our experienced matched yours on every point though.

        Haha yes on the plane before take off and entering Haikou airport they were pretty stern on no lighters.
        I thought they were confiscated at the previous airport security and I'm not a smoker so had dismissed that!

          Funnily enough, if you go to visit places like Tiananmen Square there will be a few security/passport checks on the way in, and a pile of lighters before the x-ray, so it's not just flights.

      Additionally your bags will never be forwarded to destination without rechecking in. Really difficult with kids/people who can't sit still long going through security multiple times.

        At check in they told me our bags were going all the way to Bangkok, we didn't have to re-check in at Haikou. I ordered my flight directly from Hainan's website if that matters. I visited in March.

    @beatthatflight - the mobile web page is not very user friendly. Half of the screen is blocked by the search criteria, which is not collapsing or minimising. I also struggle to find the sort option on the mobile site

      Not this deal, but booked the same airline to Hong Kong from mid Nov to mid Jan for a similar price (Under $3k for 2 A + 1 C).

          Our second long trip over, enjoying the visa free policy while it lasts. Such a massive place with lots of variety between provinces, just a shame about the smog.

          Hopefully your Thailand trip goes well, it's on our list to go back to someday for sure. Too many places, not enough time.

      I've booked AKL-KUL late Sep, directly on Hainan Airlines website. Comes down to about $1400 pp, which is quite nice given that it will be the school holiday period.

      There will be an 11-hour transit in Haikou - planning to get the free transit hotel and hop on a Didi to get some food.
