Cheapiest way to watch the fifa World Cup?

I'm hesitant to purchase the tvnz pass, it's their first time doing something like this and recent updates have just made the app worse so I'm not confident that it will be a good experience.

I was thinking of getting a vpn for a month and streaming it through SBS australia

  • Sportzx is one of the reliable way to watch it on Andriod/PC/Firestick. No apple support. Multiple HD streams were working for Mexico match.

    • Worked on my Google Chromecast. Need to test live match South Korea vs Czech @ 2pm

      • Did it work? I've installed this now and can watch highlights will test with the Canada match in the morning. And I too say thanks heaps for sharing this looks top notch.

        • I watched it. Full hd quality and no buffering.

          • @ace310: Thanks man, watching the game now comes in perfectly. You the MVP of the cheapies world today!!

    • Amazing app. Thanks heaps!

    • Full HD with no buffer

    • Nice find.
I just sideloaded to my Nvidia Shield Pro and it works a treat.

    • Wow this is fantastic

    • The links there divert to aliexpress for me. Do you have a link to get apk?

          • @drajk:

… worked in firefox but in Edge that link also linked Aliexpress!

That's very interesting - I would be concerned that you have something undesirable installed on your machine.

For me it worked in both FireFox and Edge (both on Win11).

I didn't bother trying it on Linux / FireFox, but I can't imagine it wouldn't work there too.

      • I've noticed what's going on here. It does open links to ads, but they open in new tabs. If this happens for anybody else, just close the ad tab and the Sportsx tab will be in the background.

It'll probably happen 2-3 times before you get the APK downloaded.

    • Thanks heaps for this! Just watched the Brazil match with no buffering.

    • Thanks for the recommended! Can you write up a simple guide how to download and use it please.

      • If you click the link it has a full installation guide.

        • Where exactly do you download the app? Clicking 'Get version 2.5v' redirects me to a 'Download SportzX TV v2.1 Apk' page, and trying to load https://sportzxtv.com/ just says 'This site cannot be reached'. It's just look a bit sketchy to me?

          • @doubledippps: The apk is what you need to download.
Depending on what device you are installing it on the required steps are listed further down the main page.

            • @bigcheese: Cheers bigcheese! Just got it installed and seems to be running mint. Will give it a go at tomorrow morning's match.

    • Looks like it is not working atm. Telegram group says to install the older ver 1.8 instead. Couldn't find the older version link anywhere on their website!

      • I haven't installed it, but there's now also a newer 2.6 version released as well.

        TG group link - https://t.me/dllsportzx

        • Cheers. Just installed. Now they make you watch 10 seconds ads before letting you watch the match 😂

  • Hmmm I've never had an issue with the TVNZ app pre or post update.

Its $46 so cheap as chips for the number of games and ability to have it streamed on 2 devices as once. So you could share it with someone maybe?

Otherwise, NZ games are free but those wont be the good games.

Or just stream it online. There are always plenty of free (but often a bit dodgy) streams available. I haven't bought a UFC or boxing PPV for years. But for the price and ease I think the fifa pass on the TVNZ app is just fine.

Btw, when purchasing the Fifa pass on TVNZ there was a space you could enter a voucher code. I haven't seen any promoted anywhere. Hopefully some people can share here if they have seen them

  • Hello, just thought I'd share my recent experience with proton vpn, bought it for a month and SBS blocks it.
Could not get it to work, tried various settings turning off addblockers and whatnot.

Would like to know if there is another VPN out there that does werk it!

    • Have you s considered trying bbc and itv in the UK on it? They are also free to air channels and generally their coverage offers more punditry than both the tvnz and sbs options.

    • Purevpn is advertising sbs on their website. Currently topCashback au has 120% cashback for 1 and 2 years plan.

Edit: Get paid to watch football. That's a Win-win 😂

    • NordVPN works

  • Have just tried Nord VPN for SBS and streamed okay for me.

  • The free version of Tunnelbear allows 2GB a day .. haven't tried it myself yet though.

  • I ended up signing up for the Irish Iplayer (rte.ie), worked nicely with the Mexico game. I would have switched vpn but I have paid the month already.

    • How legit is this? Never heard of it before…

        • Wow.. it looks impressive. What NZ channels are available .. there's none listed on the Channels List? Do they have Sky Sports channels ?

I guess there would be other overseas channels showing the same content .. likely Australian, like Stan ?

          • @ScoobyNZ: The link from ace310 above has all the Sky Sport NZ channels

            • @bigcheese: Ahh Sportsx .. okay thanks, I'll check it out

            • @bigcheese: SO I've got it running on my Fire TV Stick .. but can't see any Sky TV channels .. are you able to tell me where to find them ?? Thanks.

              • @ScoobyNZ:

                • On the main menu select 'Categories' and then choose 'Sports' (the very first option with the SportzX logo).
                • From the list you will see the logo for 'Sky Sport' which has all the NZ Sky Sport channels - it's the 22nd option for me on the list.
                • Not to be confused with 'Sky Sports' which features earlier in the list and is the UK version of Sky.
                • @bigcheese: Ohh thanks! The buffering on it though is absolutely terrible. It doesn't play for any more than 10 seconds max before loading.

                  • @ScoobyNZ: I get no buffering at all on any of the channels I have tried

                    • @bigcheese: Maybe my apartment's wifi isn't very good. I'll try using my phone's mobile data and see if that's any better

                    • @bigcheese: Ok yeah, looks like it's my Wifi. Run it off my phone's mobile data and it's fine. Guess I have to try and troubleshoot that. Thanks for the help.

                      • @ScoobyNZ: The SportzX site is the best I have seen.
Good range of channels and the quality is great.
The fact there are no annoying ads or pop-ups that require blocking is also nice.

                        • @bigcheese: Yeah this is awesome. No need to renew my sky sport sub now.. and the bonus of all the overseas stuff too.

I was contemplating checking out that Elite App from the other thread too. If that was the same, I could use that on mobile devices, and use this SportsX on my Fire TV

Now to figure out my Wifi speed issues. My bedroom / monitor is a fair way away from the router. The Fire Stick supports the latest Wifi protocols but perhaps the router we have is a cheapo that doesn't supply good speed. Or our plan is a cheapo plan, which it may be .. I'll need to ask landlord as they supply it.

I could get a Wifi extender or repeater to boost the signal? never needed one before so I don't know.

                          • @ScoobyNZ: Won't recommend extender or repeater at all. Get a mesh routers or something with better range. I suppose you don't have access to the actual hardware, let your landlord know you are not having good wifi. Do a speed test and see. It might be possible if landlord is tech savvy he might have limited your wifi throughout or have some form of restrictions. Just guessing.

                          • @ScoobyNZ:

I could get a Wifi extender or repeater to boost the signal? never needed one before so I don't know.

If it was me, and I appreciate that you aren't, I would install my own router to connect to the landlord's via ethernet. That way you have complete control / security over your own network, and treat the landlord's kit as no safer than the public internet.

I'm assuming you can't feasibly run an ethernet cable from your bedroom which would almost always be best?

If you get your own router, you should be able to get something that will reach WiFi to your bedroom without having to resort to an extender / repeater or anything else that is suboptimal. A single WiFi6 (or even WiFi7 if FireStick supports that) should be able to reach, but you'd have to test to be sure (never know what might be hidden in the walls that can attenuate signals). If you have a friend with something like that, you could ask to borrow it for an hour and test, and if it works, buy the same unit perhaps.

                        • @bigcheese: Completely agree, had been using vipbox and vpn to uk FTA channels but this beats it hands down. The most complete sports package you could get on your tv.

                • @bigcheese: Hey @bigcheese, do any of the NZ Sky Sport Channels load for you? I've set up Sportzx today ahead of the Super Rugby final and ive found a lot, if not most, of the Channels don't load, including the Sky Sport NZ Channels. The live sport on the homepage loads though so I know the app is working.

                  • @littletoolate: Unfortunately not at the moment.
They have been working perfectly up until now so not sure what’s going on with them,
Currently I can’t get any of them to load either.

                    • @bigcheese: Oh no! Maybe I broke it! Haha, oh well back to Vipbox for tonight. Thanks for checking and letting me know.

                  • @littletoolate: No, they stopped working for me last week, but the couple of days before when I installed the sportx app, they were working. Maybe they cottoned onto whoever was accessing the services and blocked them. I did message their Facebook group but haven't heard anything back.

        • I have signed up, they asked who put us into them, can you dm me your EliteID?

  • A bit late to the party now seeing as the final two games are going to be free to watch on TVNZ+, but I've been using https://sportfusion.me/ through Edge on the PC to watch some of the world cup matches, it offers a range of sports and is very similar to the old VipBox site that was shut down earlier this year. Matches I watched were in HD with little to no buffering once they got going and the little bit of buffering I did experience I don't know if was the site or the official stream that was buffering.

Same as VipBox make sure your adblocker is up to date (I use the free Adguard Adblocker extension for Edge) and don't click on any popups like "click here to confirm you're human" or "click here to access" or any crap that might pop up when you first click a link, if it doesn't take you to the page it was meant to just hit the back button and click the link again.
