Good to see these guys do offer a status point benefit too.

ANZ has that 50% bonus status points on all flights which is appealing.

    • The ANZ card is great if you fly air nz regularly, I have both Amex and the ANZ card got me to elite pretty quick. (annual fees waived through work for the ANZ card hence why I have both)

      • How much do you need to spend to get to Elite?

        • maybe like under 15k. Theyve done 2 double status promotions, and I think another one is coming soon, if you utilise those itll be way cheaper

      • How easy to get the elite .

        • With the ANZ card, around 3x return business should get it, with the Air NZ double status points probs 1x return business and mix business/economy should do it.

          • @Lieutenantdave: Re “air nz double status points”, so you mean those occasional promotions they do quantum time to time?

            • @Jaxson: They did in december and in march. Heard from a source they should be another one toward the end of the year

    • I have both the anz airpoints plat and the AMEX. They work well together and ANZ usually waive the card fees when i ask

      • With ANZ, do you have mortgage/insurance from them? And what's the success rate in ANZ waiving the fee?
I've recently got a mortgage with ANZ so wondering to move onto ANZ Airpoint Platinum Visa from the free SBS Visa card.
        Thanks

      • Where are you asking?
I'm leaning ANZ Platinum to get the 50% points bonus, but will ask and say I'm considering AMEX instead and see if they can match or similar.

        • +1

@Jaxson -I was asking @Mrmango with his experience with ANZ waiving credit card fee; whether he had ANZ financial product for ANZ to easily waive the annual credit card fee.

It's good point that ANZ Airpoint Platinum Visa sounds good too with extra 50% bonus AirNZ status points.

  • Does AMEX ever extend these offers to existing card holders? Anyone tried making a request?

    • Call them up, say you want to cancel, they'll put you through to a retention person who'll offer you some airpoints, but likely not the whole 400. Haven't done it for a year or two though.

      • +6

Tried this in Feb. They just close it right there and then. Just asked what was the reason to close.

So ended up closing mine so I can re-apply in 18 months so I can get this welcome offer again.

a week prior to this my wife got rejected for the amex platinum so i closed mine

        • Good to know…

          • @dealhunter: Yeah the days of free airpoints for calling their bluff on a cancellation call is long gone unless you're a serious spender, i.e. $100k+ per year and then 400 airpoints is a drop in the ocean. I also tried and they basically said see you in 18 months.

            • @Rhys: Yeah, I've only using $200-300 a month on Amex though so probably contribute to why they don't bother. (eventhough they stated on the call that I've been a long time customer since 2017).

have put a reminder in 18 months to re-apply to get welcome bonus if Im still interested

              • +2

@spam: so not worth it for you to pay $195 in annual fees

                • @RealityCheckMate: Was offered 200000 amex point on platinum charge card last month. I believe if you have received retention offer last year they not likely to offer this year.

                • @RealityCheckMate: I was after the lounge access as i normally go through sydney or Melbourne. But yeah, if the get rid of those in 18 months, then it's not worth it

                  • @spam: if the get rid of those in 18 months " - Didn't know that - got a link ?
I understand no changes to Amex Airpoints ?
American Express Airpoints Platinum Card: Retains 2 complimentary Priority Pass visits per year and 2 entries to Sydney/Melbourne Centurion Lounges.

                    • @RealityCheckMate: Sorry, typo.

I meant if they get rid of those perks or reduce it in 18 months given the trend of credit card perks reducing because of the fee.
Then, the annual fee is definitely not worth it

        • +1

Yeah… I just tried last week, they were going to close my account straight away. I said I will call back after I transfer my points. Time is tough, no more rentenion offer.

          • @Superpower21: I've never had that offered while others had, then again I probably only put 15k through it a year and have never paid any interest.
I've had the card on and off every 18 months since 2019 so I don't think this is new.

When you link to Apple Pay, does that get around retailers who don’t accept Amex?

    • +3

Doubt it cause it's still amex.

    • +7

No. Apple and google pay are interfaces/conduits, it doesnt change the processor (amex, visa etc)

  • +4

BTW, you can add Amex to Google pay now. Finally…..

    • Oh wow that's cool.

    • Finally!!!

    • Been waiting for over 1 year, well done Amex only took 1yr after this was released in AU

    • Oh wow, this has been a long time coming.

    • This!!!

    • I’d suggest not adding it to Google Wallet yet. Amex offered a $15 bonus for cards that hadn’t been added to Apple Wallet before.

  • Anyone successfully gotten approved for amex America but live in nz? They seem to have better offers

    • +1

wouldn’t that also mean the card will be in USD?

  • Just want to upgrade my no annual fee one to premium for the extra benefit , doesn’t matter for annual fee or welcome bonus.
However called their so called customer service few times, just replied they have no such kind of upgrade can help. Only told me to apply separately while it is impossible to apply for one right now, no matter I have been using it for a long time and pay for that on time.
    A bit disappointed

    • The customer service team have continually told me the same however they will occasionally give you a custom link to apply for a card upgrade directly within the app.

It appears that this base link is still working to apply for a card upgrade within the same category. When I last applied via this link I received an upgraded card within 5 days.

      https://www.americanexpress.com/en-nz/credit-cards/change/

      • You would not be eligible for the bonus correct?

        • +1

Correct, the 18 month period still applies so you would be ineligible for any sign up bonus when upgrading your card.

      • Thank you so much for that. Will give it a try.

  • I cancelled my Amex Platinum charge card in January 2024 and was waiting 18 months to apply for another but ended up going with the ASB VIsa Platinum in October 2025 as they offered $300 bonus which I believe was the same as Amex at the time.

I think I will go ahead any apply for this and cancel the ASB hehe.

    • Nice one, Did the same. now waiting for mine to expire
      Keeping ASB instead of Westpac

    • Was this just straight $300 cash deposited to your main account?

  • I’ve never managed to get an Amex Platinum card. How do people get one so easily? I then end up with an ANZ Airpoint Platinum and it’s super easy

    • Don't know how it varies so much - I've had banks previously asking for heaps of statements and asking lots of questions
With AMEX this time around I was approved within 24 hours

  • Is the rubbish airport(airnz) a better option than Amex Gold(other airlines miles)?

    • Depends who you fly with the most, air nz is part of star alliance
