    Looks to be a reasonable price for what it’s offering but alas it is from Starlink. I wouldn’t go close to it as long as I have other options.

      Curious to hear your what your concerns are. Is it latency or just because it's run by Elon?

      • +4

        No my concerns are more towards tracking, surveillance, data collection privacy concerns. Not to mention the fact that they have deals with DoD. I don’t want my money being spent in any way to fund murders all around the world.

        • +1

          Good point our money should be spent in our country

        • Fair enough. Hadn't considered that although most ISP's will be tracking everything to some degree.

          Look up the Telecommunications (Interception Capability and Security) Act 2013 if you want to see what NZ telcos are required to do with real-time interceptions. I assume Starlink would come under that too with their NZ ground stations.

          I don't want to make this a political post so will just say good on ya for sticking to your principles.

            @BlackLab: Silicon Valley companies are known for breaking the law than following them (especially musk &co).
            Unless you’re unequivocally certain, I would suggest you consider that they aren’t following it.

            Local ISP tracking can be sidestepped by using dns & vpn services. But with starlink just has more vectors to fingerprint you & collect data.

            Plus they are quite controversial for their data handling policy, so I would suggest that everyone should give it a wide berth.

            But if you simply have no choices in your area then it might be worth a look. Can’t wait for more choices to emerge.

    A good deal!

    Note however if you have fibre available, it’s probably a better deal once you factor in the electricity costs (I understand the Starlink units require quite a bit more power than an ONT + router!).

    • Are you sure about that? I wouldn't be surprised that Starlink uses more power given that it's a satellite connection but can't imagine the power draw would have that big an impact on the running cost.

        I was curious so I did some quick calculations. I think you're looking at about ~40w vs about ~100w, which for me would work out to about $10/month. So, statistically significant but probably not practically significant for most people comparing the two options.

        Slightly higher power use but not much difference according to AI.

        The Starlink Mini draws 20-35W during use, while a typical fibre ONT + router combo runs 15-25W continuously.

        24/7 running cost comparion (monthly at ~37c/kWh)

        Device Draw Monthly cost
        ONT (always on) ~7W ~$1.90
        Router (always on) ~15W ~$4.10
        Fibre total ~22W ~$6.00
        Starlink Mini (8hrs/day) ~25W avg ~$2.70
        Starlink Mini (always on) ~25W avg ~$6.80

        So really only 80c difference per month. Not something I would worry about

          Looks like the model included is the standard, 75 - 100W. Not a huge difference in actual cost, but 3 - 4 times the consumption of the mini listed above.

          • @Kiwi: Looks like you're right and it includes the Standard instead of Mini. (The Mini also tops out at 100Mbps)

            That bumps up the consumption to $15-18/Month running 24/7 so roughly $12 a month more in power. Definitely a something to include when comparing prices

        Not certain and happy to be proved wrong, however, some rough calculations:

        Starlink:
        Electricity cost for Starlink ~= $16
        (assuming 1.5 kWh/day usage, based on EcoFlow's article estimate, at $0.3667/kWh (my Powershop Special rate) over 30.437 days)

        Calculation:
        1.5 × 30.437 = 45.66 kWh/month
        45.66 × 0.3667 = $16.75/month

        Plan cost = $59
        Total = $75.75/month (first 4 months)

        Fibre:
        Electricity cost for ONT + router ~= $3.75/month
        (assuming ~7W each, ~14W total continuous load, based on Consumer NZ's article)

        Calculation:
        14W = 0.014 kW
        0.014 × 24 × 30.437 = 10.22 kWh/month
        10.22 × 0.3667 = $3.75/month

        Fibre plan = $65/month (Quic 100/20)
        Total = $68.75/month
