I think it only works if you signup for the newsletters and logged in with that email address.
It can take a while to work, 30 mins or so, once you get the welcome email the code will work.
Created a new account, the code worked straight away. I didn't sign up for the newsletters.

Welcome code worked, then did not work.
I think it was to do with stacking deals. So… I nuked all my history and cookies and then went in with an empty basket, cold login, apply welcome discount in account menu, then selected blunt umbrellas, then brought.
That worked - so now it's paid for and queued to ship.
