Nau Mai Ra Now Accepting New Sign Ups (Low Daily Charge Power Company) @ Nau Mai Ra

241

IMPORTANT - Their website prices are quoted excluding GST and there is a 40c (exl GST) invoice fee charged weekly.

After not taking on new sign ups for a number of months, Nau Mai Ra are now able to do this. Generally they have a lower daily charge for most areas depending on address - some as low as 40c ex GST per day! Might be a good time to switch (after comparing your numbers) given the large increases in daily charges from April 1st.

Good to see them opening sign ups again. Worth noting the low daily charge can be great for households with lower power usage, but it’s still important to compare the unit rate as well, that’s where the real cost can add up. Always pays to run the numbers based on your own usage before switching.

  • It would be so much easier for end users and them if they published their rates online!

  • +1

Over 70c (inc. GST) cheaper for me on the daily rate, and only a 3-4c bump per kWh (compared to the one of the cheapest plans in my area). Thanks!

    • Nice!

  • Hmm

    Your price: 30.09c per kWh
    Daily fixed charge: $0.90
    Fee per invoice: $0.40

The daily fee and peak rates are way cheaper. But off peak is more expensive by far. I'll have to do some calculations.

    • +3

I did a calculation and anything over 250KW a month is more expensive then SUPA who I'm currently with and was the cheapest I could find,
good to note that Nau Mai Ra doesn't display their prices including GST and has no way to toggle it to include, so need to add that into calculation.

I wish providers would just display including GST, everyone will need to have it applied and its not like adding the calculation is hard technically on their website.
If prices were close Nau Mai Ra have a pretty good mission though

      • Thank you so much sharing this, wasnt aware of this and I think this is the best rates so far I have seen. Just signed up. Hopefully they wont change the rates soon haha

  • This is what I get for my address in Auckland
    Uncontrolled: 31.26c per kWh
    Controlled: 31.26c per kWh
    Daily fixed charge: $0.45
    Fee per invoice: $0.40

    For Reference Electric Kiwi is:
    Uncontrolled: 38.85c per kWh
    Controlled: 38.85c per kWh
    Daily fixed charge: $2.00

Seems like a no brainer? Wondering what the catch is

    • +1

We've been with them for a long time and had no issues. I believe they are genuinely wanting to help people, but up until now they were not able to offer new sign ups. They do only invoice weekly I believe, no monthly options so this might be an issue for some.

    • +2

Electric Kiwi is one of the most expensive providers I could find when recently changing power providers, you probably benefit from checking https://billy.govt.nz/ to make sure that there aren't better options

      • Hey I just did the billy option and it gave me electric kiwi and one other again but Nau mai ra isn't an option so it hasn't been compared? Is this an issue for anyone else

        • +1

Nau mai probably hasn't been added as on option on the site since its a little smaller and wasn't taking applications for a while.

  • +4

Folks please be careful with your calculations and posts here : The figures I'm seeing on their website are EXCLUDING gst….!.

    • +1

Yup all prices quoted excluding GST and also need to account for a 40c invoice weekly (not monthly) in your total bill if comparing to monthly cost of other providers. For us personally I’ve found Nau Mai Ra consistently still comes out cheaper due to substantially lower daily charge.

  • And I've just run my address in Auckland (north shore , but low socioeconomic area). Im on E.K low user rates with a large % of daily useage in the 1 hour free H.O.P : Even at a much lower daily charges total Nau Mai Ra is still about 20% higher total cost average "per week". (So with NMRs at only a weekly "invoice charges fee" cycle option incorporated too).

    I compared powershop rates

    https://www.powershop.co.nz/public/Ratecards/2026/03-Aucklan…

    To this at
    Your plan:

    Your price: 32.82c per kWh
    Daily fixed charge: $0.45
    Fee per invoice: $0.40
    Prices excluding GST.

    Supa are:
    Purple pancake gst inclusive
Simple flat-rate power. Payment by direct debit only.
    Anytime rate

    $0.2834 /kWh

    Daily supply charge

    $1.7250 /day

I think I'm better off.. we use about 280kw pm. And powershop fixed day rate plus peak seem really expensive for April (0.4xc)

But I'm not sure as it seems the invoice per week all adds up plus excl gst..

    Your plan:
    Your price: 32.82c per kWh
    Daily fixed charge: $0.45
    Fee per invoice: $0.40
    Prices excluding GST.

    (500x0.3282)+(31x0.45)=178.05+15% = $204.75

    Ecotricity (my current)

    Daily $1.61
    per kwh $0.2962
    Prices include GST

    (500x0.2962)+(31x1.61) = $198.01

    • +1

Ecotricity has been bought out though so can't imagine those rates will last much longer

    • Thanks for your equations, it helped get me started, I've never had a maths brain & it's a lot worse now :-( I think you might have missed the $1.60 invoice fee but I haven't totalled it up.

  • I am on the contact free weekend plan I have only been with them for 2 weeks. 187kwh used and 76kwh was free. Based on this contact came in cheaper by $21.70. Contact $68.84 Nau Mai Ra $90.54

    • +1

I was on the free weekend plan then worked out that my usage better suited the daily plan. My free to paid ratio is almost 50:50.

Bear in mind though the daily charge is going to go up in the next bill

      • +1

Is Contact raising their daily charge? I just switched over from Meridian.

        • Everyone is. They're phasing out low user daily charges so it's going up $0.30 every year.

          • +1

@Redcafej: Thats what i dont understand, how is this company covering the daily usage charge that should be passed on to consumers?.

            • @coffeee: with a high flat kWh rate (oxymoron?) & maybe some savings in their GUI & admin structures. It's all smoke & mirrors, can quickly add up & consume any savings.

    • Yeah more false advertising, it's more like half a weekend when you read the fine print but not a bad plan if you can make it work.

  • So is the consensus from this thread that every provider that’s been compared is cheaper than Nau Mai Ra? Currently on the market to sign up with a new provider for my new flat and may have made a hasty decision signing up with them

    • +2

You really need to get quotes from the different providers and compare them as prices can differ quite a bit depending on where you are in the country/which lines company services your address. Also your usage can play a factor as well. It's the main reason why it's impossible to recommend one power company as the cheapest.

As far as I can tell there's no contract period? So you shouldn't have any problem switching to another company.

    • There is so many variables it's unfortunately not just a matter of saying one is cheaper than the other. For example Electric Kiwi with their free daily hour of power and free Sunday suits us extremely well. Even though their rates maybe higher out of those times, if you load shift to the free periods it works out cheaper overall (for us)

    • Unless connection is for a bach home or household with super low usage (under 160 kWh per month). Biggest pitfall is they don't offer off-peak power rates so the perceived savings of $30 to $80 per month are quickly reduced by the high rates as power usage increases e.g. heating esp during winter time.

  • Apparently they service my area, but the 'Join Now' button is not clickable.

  • Rare case here in Hamilton where they work out slightly more expensive than Mercury, but I think I'm on a mates rate which might explain it? Or just a higher user, 504 kWh last month.

    • Same here, Hams and with Mercury too and Nau Mai Ra was more expensive

  • I checked and it's cheaper for us (2-bd house in Johnsonville) to stay with Contact energy bundled with fibre.

I know the two founders through church and I can vouch for them, they're very genuine, down to earth and kind, so they really are just tryna help people through good power prices

  • Interesting
Low user in Hamilton and this is 25% more expensive according to my rather complicated spreadsheet :)

But I am on a very good plan with Meridian

Others are correct. To actually do the comparison justice you need to take account of every part of each offer as it relates to your usage.
this means the answer is often different depending on your household.

    • +3

      Of poor reporting?

Because power doesn't just disappear into nowhere. If people are getting big bills it's because they have increased usage, are being charged more, or have been charged in error. All things that could have been easily confirmed by the reporter asking them to share their invoices, and the "mystery" would be solved - along with providing some useful information to the reader…

But yes. You will need to be a very specific low use household for this to save you money given the high (but not the highest) per kWh rate.

      • +1

The article is entirely relevant to the deal. Have it out with the reporter if you deem it to be poor. I am just informing those who are interested.

      • +1

Reporting is very poor as you can't have Transpower as a retailer, they're the network operator, not power supplier. There does seem to be a lot of discrepancies in what they've said with a lack of proof. However a company not responding or being very difficult to get a hold of, to actually discuss issues with, is also a big red flag.
It's one of the issues with direct debit, you're at the mercy of the retailer correctly billing you.

  • havent found any other negative information but the "weekly direct debit plan" being the only option is a turn off, if i didnt have gas i would try them. Saving on the daily charge only.

  • I ran the numbers for my house (Blenheim). The lower daily charge on the new offer is great, but the higher c/kWh rate means the break-even point sits at roughly 550 kWh per month. Based on my recent usage trend and expected coming months, I’ll likely be above that threshold, so the current plan should still give me the better total cost.

  • -1

    frank is cheaper

    • +1

frank is shutting down isn't it?

      • As of June 2025, Genesis announced it is closing the standalone Frank Energy brand to streamline its retail business.

  • Frank is being migrated to Genesis and no new sign ups

    • I don't think its the same price though right? I was with frank and the email made it seem like id be automatically signed up at the standard rate which was significantly more

  • Be careful. I did my initial calculations and NMR priced cheaper than Contract on my summer bill. But my winter usage is 3 times my summer usage. And on that Contact priced cheaper by more than 30% due to NMR's higher kwh cost

    • It's a good deal for low power users, or for holiday homes etc. It just comes down to each households individual needs. The lower daily charge would have to make up for the higher per kW rate. It's also good to think about the ever increasing daily charges, as from 2027 there will be no cap as to what retailers can charge per day just to stay connected.

  • I'm casting a negative vote on this, because, based on my region and estimated usage, I calculated several other providers to be cheaper overall than this offer once total charges are compared.

  • Oh well it was far past time to kick powershop to the kerb, been wth them far far too long though they were fantastic deal back in the day. Will give this crowd a go, seems like I could make it work but as others have pointed out its probably just for extremely low power users, it got marginal at about ~250kWh for me assuming my maths correct, which there is a good chance it isn't! Mercury with their $300 cashback & then electrickiwi with 3months free mobile probably came next.

  • +1

So it's been about 2 weeks..After changing from powershop it's a big relief not having to starve until 9pm to have my dinner & not worry about what time I use the washing machine or lawnmower( except on Sundays, there should be one day in the week we don't have to have a city made of noise :-(, yeah, I'm looking at you pagans!:-)
Now I don't have to worry so much about what time I open fridge door or boil the kettle & can take the time switches off the fridge & freezer & dehumidifier etc, so in that respect the flat rate is quite nice & possibly worth it without any additional savings!
Not having an off peak rate can be an advantage, as it's one less variable to worry about.
Also nice is their mission to distribute profits to community causes, but of course I'm all about the saving ;-)
P.S. Once you join their very basic dashboard includes power used, daily rate, the invoice charge & gst as one sum under "This week's bill so far" so makes it simple to keep an eye on.
I do miss Powershops more detailed daily usage breakdown but I definately don't miss their gamified approach to selling power & elitist offering prizes/discounts etc to only those that are social media & app players etc, yawn!
I'm looking forward to seeing Nau Mai Ra grow, if they continue how I've started with them I'll be very happy with changing.

    • Glad you’re enjoying the switch. From the sounds of it Powershop’s new app isn’t much to miss anyway. Nowhere near as good as the old one.

  • Says in description Auckland but I tried to swap my folks over who are in Milford North Shore & it was a no go, I'm a couple suburbs over & no problem!
As for powershop app, never really used it, was more browser based graph & hourly data orientated to see where every trickle of power goes.
