  • Perfect timing. My bogof from last year was expiring at the end of the month

Yeah same here although am considering the 2Degrees carryover trick as I worked out I only use about 70gb/y which would cost $13/m instead of $19.25 on Kogan, but the main trade-off is just the admin of managing it manually vs set-and-forget annual plan.

      • This was an epic hack…. Have my 11 and 12 year old doing this!

        Whats the 2deg plan?

        • +10

You grab a $34 fortnightly plan for one cycle, which loads you up with 40 GB of data.
Once that fortnight is done, you drop down to the $8/month plan. This only gives you 150 MB per month, but the idea is that you’re living off that 40 GB stockpile you already loaded up. The $8 plan just keeps your number active cheaply.
After about 6 months (or whenever your data is running low), you jump back onto the $34 fortnightly plan for another 40 GB top-up, then drop back down to $8/month for the rest of the year.

By the end of the year you’ve spent just $156 ($13/month) and including the signup bonus for porting your number over, which gets you a free 7.5 GB you have around 89 GB of data to use.

          • @blurryface: Nice hack. Thought about this but at $198 if you can afford to pay that in one go, the 40% off Kogan Large was pretty decent for 15Gb/month and unlimited call minutes.

            • +2

@nzsaver: Yeah 40% off is great but now with only 30% off I’m on the fence

Once that fortnight is done, you drop down to the $8/month plan.

I would note that this lasted me 15 months last time (since you get carry-over data in there too), so in my case, the cost was:

            14 days = $34
            15 months = 15 x $8 = $120
            Total = $154 / 15 (ignoring the 14 days)

Or just over $10 per month for essentially unlimited data, calls, and SMS (for my usage pattern).

I didn't port a number, so no 7.5GB, but at about $10 per month, I am already quite happy :-)

            YMMV.

            • @Alan6984: Good to know it’s been working well for you, I thought it said on their website carryover data expired 12 months from purchase? But yeah, definitely brings the price down if you can get away with ~41.5GB per year.

              • +1

@blurryface: The oldest Data is always used first.

Not sure if it is still the case but I use to use a simiilar truck when I was on pay monthly with 2degrees.

There plans use tonbe charged Pro rata.

So if you changed the plan after the it rolled over you would be charged mostly at thr lower rate.

Have no idea if this is still the case.thoug.

You are correct that carry-over data expires after 12 months.

However, it seems to use the oldest carry-over data first, so at the end of 12 months, I still had carry-over data from my $8 plans that was (I suspect) eleven months old (probably about 11 x 150MB = 1,650MB). Over the next three months I also accrued another 3 x 150MB = 450MB.

That 2,100 MB seems to have lasted me the three months, so I must have been using about 700MB a month in that period I guess (pretty low usage to be fair).

I should also note that six weeks (or so) was over Xmas / summer, so I would have been at home (or at a friends batch in Coromandel) most of that time, and would have used very little 5G data in that period, so that likely helped too, as I suspect much of my data goes on using Google Maps (trying) to avoid traffic around Auckland normally!

I didn't watch the data clock, so not really sure, but I did the 14 day top-up in Nov 2024, and then again about ten days ago, so it seems to have lasted me about 15 months effectively.

      • 2degree hack is really tempting.
I'm hwvr quite addicted to Kogan's free shortcode and MMS messaging!
Not having a card on file that they can charge is such a bonus. When abroad, I don't bother turning off my Kogan SIM…
That's one thing that if they change will make me move from Kogan.

        • +1

Or you get a missed call from international and a tendency to call back

  • If renewing but wish to receive a physical SIM, and we order Plan + physical SIM - does the Plan code come instantly by email or does it come together in mail with the physical SIM?

And I assume that the code can just be applied to existing SIM (leaving the new physical SIM for any future use)?

    • Has come via email previously so I’m sure it still does

      • Correct.
The code will be sent via email and the SIM by post.
Code can be applied to any Kogan SIM (new or currently active) and will activate from the moment you enter the code. It won't stack with existing expiry so activate either when your current pack is due to expire or the 31/5/26, whichever is sooner.

No BOGOF, no deal. Bye Koganmobile!

    • +2

      Add me to the group.

  • +3

Bye kogan. Switched to 2degrees. $34 p/fn initally for 40gb + 7.5gb bonus carryover data, then coasting on the $8p/m plan the rest of the year

    • Why not join for $60/m for 50gb then $8/m? Seems work out cheaper..

      • +1

The plan is to stop after a fortnight = $34 not $60

      • +1

        85c per GB vs $1.20

I've got two Kogan Sim cards here if anyone wants them couriered for $5 each non rural (cover postage)

  • +2

For someone who use around 10GB per month, is there any other options or do I have to swollow the price increase (just like almost everything else)…:(

    • +1

You would probably be better off going the 2Degrees way as mentioned above by @blurryface

For example, in your case you could:

Get the $34 plan to start with giving you 40GB of data plus another 7.5GB for porting your number
After two weeks drop down to the $8/month plan for as long as you need, only switching to the higher plan when your data gets low.

Even going on the monthly $60/m plan for a couple of months and then the $8/m plan would give you 109GB (50GB + 50GB + 7.5GB + 1.5GB) for a total of $200 for the year.

    • Temporary option: Telsim (on One NZ, physical SIM) has a 10GB/month for $10/month for first three months (first month is 20GB). Just unsure if the plan is cancellable at any time (I assume by simply removing the auto-renewal. it's $40/month thereafter).

Never used this company so unsure how reliable they are. Telsim has been posted on Cheapies once before

Why - give us the numbers over 1 Year please ?

        What @Alan6984 + @blurryface suggest seems smarter

Choice + Cheapies, right … why pay more for less, makes no sense?

Inshittification isn't choice nor cheap :)

        • +1

I guess with 2Degrees you could go:

          $34 = 40GB for 2 weeks
          $8 = 150MB for a month

          and then repeat.

So you'd pay $42 over six weeks (or so) for 40.15GB, or about $30 pm for about 29GB pm compared to Kogan's $35 pm for 15GB pm.

The benefit of 2Degrees is you can mix and match (within the limits of course) to whatever works for you personally, without having to pay for data you'll never use, unless you get to the very bottom end like me :-)

        • Sure.
Was just stating that @Peter Wyngarde's post was a great way for one to #sample the Kogan network and see if it's for you…

Set and forget Is one reason why
have been one BOGOF for a few years but if they don't do BOGOF again , I will review

  • Just tried to swap over to 2degrees…

    Well, this is embarrassing…
For one reason or another, we're unable to process this order.
Give us a call on 0800 022 022, and we'll help sort this out.

But they've charged my card $34… Will have to call tomorrow.

  • I'm leaving kogan too, will be back with BOGOF

  • Does anyone know if you can port your number on the weekend and public holidays? my Kogan runs out Saturday and I was thinking about changing to 2degrees
