I purchased this machine when it was ~$100. Great machine, still going strong. My only problem with it is the height from the drip tray to the portafilter. I can't fit any of my mugs underneath without removing the mesh tray.

It'll last you surprisingly well, if you take care of it and descale it and clean the parts properly, there's really not much to go wrong apart from some seals and o rings because you get a stainless steel boiler which is a better material.

It also comes with a pressurized portafilter so you can use supermarket ground coffee but you can modify it and turn it into a normal portafilter and use a good grinder. It's actually amazing that you can get somewhat reasonable espresso nowadays with a total spend of <$200 for brand new machines. Add some cheap AliExpress accessories like a proper tamper and a puck screen and you're good to go.

I'd say if you're on a limited budget and you want to make good espresso at home, you'd be quite happy with this and a cheap Kingrinder manual grinder. Save your money to buy better coffee beans, that's what'll make the biggest difference to your cup.

  • That special is pretty enticing, I've been toying with the idea of moving away from capsules so this could be it! Can anyone recommend a decent coffee grinder please? Very new to this so not sure what to look out for.

Ok this gon be long. What you want is a grinder with steel burrs.

If you're on a tight budget, it's not as bad as it used to be where you could only get blade grinders and cheap white ceramic faux burrs like the Hario and Porlex. Obviously stay away from those. Your cheapest bet would be one of the Kingrinder P2 or 1zpresso Q Air for manual grinders which are better value but for some it might be a hassle to manually grind for espresso. In which case the cheapest recommended electric grinder would be the Baratza Encore ESP or the Fellow Opus if you can get one. I'd say stay away from the Breville Smart Grinder unless you can get it for stupid cheap.

I was on a Sunbeam EM0440 for years for espresso, it was not a bad starting point especially for $100+ brand new, AUD100 on Amazon right now. You might have to shim it with washers to get it to go fine enough but it's quite easy to do as you'll need to learn how to take the burrs apart for cleaning anyway. Apart from having to bang on it to get some stuck grounds out after grinding it produced quite good tasting espresso especially if you're just doing milk drinks.

Thanks!! Definitely will do some research on those, even if I don't get the machine right now it gives me a good starting point. No one deserves bad coffee and the grinder looks like a #1 priority for it.

Absolutely! It's a great hobby to get into but don't stress out about it. I've seen so many people getting FOMO (like with any other hobby) and they spend so much money to chase the ultimate cup. You'd be having a way better cup than a pod with just this machine and a cheap Kingrinder P2 and you buy freshly roasted well sourced coffee.

I would say if you have the budget, hold off for now because the Fellow Opus Gen 2 has been confirmed to be coming soon. That would be one of the best beginner grinder hands down once it releases, if they improve on the shortcomings of the first Gen which it sounds like it will.
