Ice Cream Recommendation - Low Sugar, Low Fat

Hey cheapies,

I am looking for recommendations for a low sugar, low fat ice cream.

I am very good in eating healthy and keeping a healthy lifestyle. However, when it comes to ice cream, it is my weakness πŸ˜‚ I can finish the whole 1L tub in 3 days or less.

I have been a big fan of kapiti and much moore 1L tub ice cream. Now looking for a healthier alternatives so I don't have to feel so guilty about it.

I have set my eyes on Zilch which has no added sugar and reduced fat. Has anyone tried it before? What do you think?

Any other suggestions are welcome!

FWIW If you have a heavy duty food processor or blender I think the healthiest, easiest ice cream is cheap, tasty and something you can easily make at home. No added sugar required:

Put 3-4 ripe, peeled bananas in a zip lock bag and freeze overnight. Once frozen, put them in a blender with about ΒΌ to Β½ cup of low fat milk (or almond or coconut milk) and a couple of teaspoons of vanilla essence, slowly increasing the speed and scraping down the sides until smooth. Enjoy! It really does taste more like vanilla soft serve than banana.

This works well with over ripe bananas, and you can adjust quantities to suit your preferences. You can eat it as is or refreeze slightly if you like it firmer. For variations try a couple of teaspoons of cocoa powder or add a cup of frozen blueberries, mango or strawberries. After it's done fold in sugar free caramel, chocolate, maple or butterscotch sauce, add walnuts, … It's very versatile! Even better if you buy bananas anyway and often find them ripening too soon.

I imagine this would be even easier with a Ninja Creami or similar, but I've never owned one. Good luck!

    • Thanks for the detailed sharing. I do have a food processor and all the ingredients you mentioned. Usually use those overiped frozen banana for baking. But I'm gonna give this a go soon. πŸ™

The zilch ice creams are actually tasty, only tried chocolate and vanilla

  • Back when I was doing keto I sometimes made ice cream using avocado, heavy cream, artificial sweetener (like erythritol and stevia, but I should warn you stevia tastes really awful), vanilla extract or cocoa powder and a tiny bit of booze (the alcohol changes freezing point, making it easier to scoop out of a container)

Peanut butter is also a good addition for extra protein.

If you have a ninja creami or similar to make desserts with, berries tend to be fairly low in sugar and high in fiber. 200g of Strawberry or Raspberry only has 10g of sugar. Banana has twice the amount.

    • Thanks for sharing mate.
Im doing keto once every few months. It is not a sustainable diet. Yea have tried stevia, to me it is not as bad :P

Heavy cream is a big no no for me. The saturated fat content is alarmingly high.

1L in three days is good restraint. I’d smash that thing in an hour or two πŸ˜…

Is that why you were up at 3am? - going through your fridge. We need to lock your fridge away for your own good :P

Frozen yogurt is delicious. A good alternative

Halo Top is my go to ice cream treat, but it's not cheap. I have been considering getting a ninja creami but haven't pulled the trigger yet, I think my mindset around food needs more work.

One thing I have been put onto is (almost zero) calorie jelly. I have it as my dessert pretty much every day, and add some fruit / Greek yoghurt for added flavour / protein in the evening.

I find zilch a bit icy compared to the normal ice cream, but it's a good alternative if you are craving for ice cream and on a healthy diet.

    • Ah I see! Make sense with reduced fat content. Will give it a go and see how I like it. Cheers!

  • A banana with cinnamon on it or whatever with your icecream like a banana split is very nice too

  • Ninja creami - frozen yoghurt. Greek vanilla bean yoghurt is good.

Sorbet (frozen fruits) generally have a lot of sugar.

  • Low Sugar, Low Fat

Hmm, the two things that make Ice Cream taste nice…

  • I've tried both Zilch and Waiheke brand ice cream for low sugar, and both taste great imo, but Zilch is cheaper for the amount you get. The carbs and Fats of the Zilch brand are also just a little bit lower than Waiheke brand too.

As mentioned above by others, making your own will give you the most control since you can choose your own level of sweetness, and type of sweetener. However using real fruit won't automatically make it healthy since fruits are usually high in fruit sugars, and when blended, you lose a lot of the benefits of eating actual fruit since the fibre has already been broken down.

I tried a few times, and find I can't be bothered making my own. Plus when I give myself free reign to eat Zilch/Waiheke brand ice cream I simply don't eat as much anyway since I get bored of eating the same flavours on repeat.

    • Thanks for sharing. Do you mean the Wahiki brand sold at woolies? They are indeed very expensive for almost $20/L

      • Yes that's the one. They taste great and are marketed as Keto, but are a bit pricey. However since I seem to have mostly gone off eating ice cream, a small tub of the Waiheke one when I get the rare itch for ice cream is still going to be cheaper than the bigger tub of Zilch if I'm not going to finish it.

I think my last tub of Zilch has been in my freezer for a year… Nothing wrong with the taste, and if you're used to eating a big tub quickly it's not going to be a problem for you. But personally I rather buy/eat a single serve as needed as once it sits around longer and gets frosted or gummy it just doesn't appeal to me anymore.

The Much Moore Ice Cream Wonders Strawberry Yoghurt is low fat ice cream, it's really really nice. Not sure if it would be low sugar though, probably not. It was named 'supreme champion' at the ice cream awards last year. Can be around $5 on special.

    • Good to know, will try it next time if I see it in the supermarket

  • As a cheaper alternative, there's a brand of Gelato which is good, but not everywhere sells it, it's called Minoo. 460ml tubs. Normally available at Woolworths but have seen it at some New Worlds. Previously I've only ever seen a Berry, Lemon, but recenty I've learned there's a Chocolate. About $5 a tub.

    • I have seen that one. Definitely not low sugar. 96% of calories are from carbs and 80% are sugar.

      • OK yip true, fair point

Fat is what makes ice cream "cream"
    Otherwise it's just flavored ice

    Go on down vote me.

  • Probably 100% over the sugar content you're after, but during my caloric deficit months I treated myself to the Lotte Coolish pouches at PnS. 130-140 calories per serving depending on flavour :)

Halo Top, Waikiki, Gym Bod, Zilch ☺️.

    • +1

      Awesome lineup bro.

What Gym Bod flavour would you recommend? And what's the cheapest have you seen them on sale? Right now it is on sale at woolies for $11/475ml

      • +1

The Gym Bod Honeycomb Crunch and Chocolate Pudding are pretty decent! Yeah it certainly gets a bit steep in price eh, even on sale. I think $11 tends to be the cheapest it gets. Whereas the Wahiki options are around $8 on sale (I have this when on keto - guilt-free πŸ˜…).

I am a diabetic so the low carb and low sugar is a must.
I usually get Zilch but bought a Ninja Creami when on sale to try.
Still experimenting with it but usually use Aeroplane Dessert Mix Lite Chocolate Mousse, Lite milk and add vanilla essence.
For Sorbet I use Watties Fruit Salad No Added Sugar which comes out alright.
And about to test a Anchor Protein Plus Greek Yoghurt Coconut with Crushed Pineapple (sort of like a pinacolada ice cream) later tonight.
One I really want to make is a Coconut ice cream with the Creami.

    • Yum! Let me know how it goes.

      • +1

The greek coconut with pineapple came out a bit bitter. I might try it again with just pineapple juice and no pulp.
Thats the thing with a Creami, you keep experimenting till you get something you like.
Will try for a coconut ice cream over the weekend with unsweetened coconut milk and vanilla essence.
There is a Creami AUS/NZ facebook group that post good recipes on as well.

        • Sounds fun.

          I grabbed 2xZilch today for 8.69 per tub. πŸŽ‰

  • Yum! Let me know how it goes.
