Gold Coast Family Trip Recommendations

Hey Cheapies, heading to the GC in late February (2 Adults, 1 Child) for 5 nights. Looking to maximize the budget without missing out.

Ticket Deals: Besides the standard Village Roadshow/Dreamworld websites, are there any current "buy 2 get 1" or RACQ/auto club/Entertainment Book style discounts that actually work for theme parks right now?

Accommodation: Best Aussie sites for deals? I usually check Wotif or Booking.com, but are there better "hidden" sites for apartment stays? Is it cheaper to stay near the parks (Oxenford) or grab a deal in Broadbeach and commute?

Airport Transfer: Is the 777 bus + Tram/Train still the best value, or is a family of 3 better off with a pre-booked shuttle or Uber?

Internet: Any current "starter pack" SIM deals (Telstra/Optus/Vodafone) that are good for a 1-week visitor?

Perks: Are there any hotel loyalty programs (like Accor/IHG) that offer significant "Stay & Play" value for the Gold Coast parks right now?

Appreciate any "tight-arse" tips to keep the costs down!

I always use Google Flights or Skyscanner and put in my itinerary for cheapest flights. Also set alerts for price decreases.

You don’t have much time so you won’t be able to wait for a good sale.

Sorry, just saw the tag, thanks @bigcheese. CHC to SYD is actually my most common route, both for my day job and because of family.

Looking at those two, cheapest is AirNZ, which is quite nice, but for 3.5ish hours the airline doesn't really matter, esp if not checking bags.

However, the 'trick' on trans-Tasman routes is to check two one way flights, as it means you get a bit more flexibility and often lower prices.

https://bookings.beatthatflight.com.au/flights/chc2302syd1?c… is almost $100 more than https://bookings.beatthatflight.com.au/flights/CHC2402syd1?c…, while coming back is fairly agnostic price wise, you could fly Emirates instead of AirNZ if that suited.

But you've mentioned times of day, which does make things a bit harder, eg it excludes Emirates coming back.

Anyway, play with those and you might find something that jumps out :)

Also if you have Qantas points, check the rewards search on Qantas, it's weird how often business class seats appear for the same number of points as economy on trans-Tasman legs…

Went to the Gold Coast with 2 kids last year. Awesome holiday. I got an Entertainment 'book' app sub before we went. Didn't find a lot of discounts tbh. We ended up spending a lot more money than we intended! but don't regret it one bit.

Theme Parks - tricky to find discounts here. We got the 5 day pass for Village Roadshow parks (Movieworld, Seaworld, and Wet n Wild). Didn't go to Dreamworld (3 days of theme parks was enough!). If you are with One NZ you could try the $20off on Book Me.

Accomodation - we found an awesome apartment on Booking.com in Broadbeach. Much quieter than a resort and we had a full kitchen and a quiet pool. Broadbeach is a great spot. Nice restaurants and shopping mall. Easy ride over the bridge to Pacific Fair.

Transport - if you stay in Broadbeach you have the tram right there. We ended up hiring a car for a couple days as it was easier for exploring. Used a voucher in the entertainment book for that.

Shopping - Ashmore Factory Outlets are awesome for surf wear and skate branded stuff. Harbour Town for other brand outlets.

Food - entertainment book app and First Table. Nuff said. A lot of places doing daily deals.

Activities - check Entertainment app: Infinity, Ripleys, Currumbin Wildlife, Cavill Ave, Markets

  • Check out Paradise Resort or Turtle Beach resort. Both in surfers I think

Isn't all public transport 50c? Not sure about airport connections cause they've always been pretty shithouse

  • When I went with the family a couple of years ago, we got our Theme park passes from Costco (Coomera, close by), Multiday pass for Movie world, wet wild, paradise country and Sea world.
Found sea world the best as less waiting in lines

  • Apartments instead of hotels.
Many have a pool and basically a small house you cook yourself in. Way cheaper.

    • And if you plan to cook yourself be a real cheapie and only buy a one way plane ticket

      • lols. You still eat out, but a quick trip to the supermarket sets you up for breakfasts during the week.
Get up, have breakfast and head out for the day. Much cheaper than a hotel if you're there for a week and you can route the family money elsewhere.

  • There are heaps of cheap SIM deals you can pickup in Australia, particularly if you have eSIM capability as it can be done entirely online.
You won't be able to activate until you arrive as you need to be in Australia and they need passport verification but it is pretty easy.
Last time I was there I used Lyca Mobile which was dirt cheap. They run on Vodafone which is generally fine, although Telstra is considered the best coverage so keep that in mind if you are planning to go more rural on your travels.
