Obligatory Ryobi 18V vs 36V question incoming.

I've got a flat <200m2 residential site. Which according to my research points me towards 18V, however I've seen few comments mentioning that the mower being 'too weak' and you have to mow every week or something crazy? I think I can live with fortnightlies maybe, any truth/opinions on this matter?

Also a super noob question, what is the etiquette on using blowers? Would my neighbours come after me if I leave the clippings on the footpath?

Still waiting for the Ryobi 18V ONE+ 3 Piece Garden Care Kit deal to come back :(

If you will mow it every week 18v will work just fine. If you want to mow it fortnightly or even less frequently then 36v will work on longer grass much better.

Blow or don't blow no one really cares. The grass will blow away itself anyway. Don't know anyone on my street that users a blower, maybe the professional lawn mower chaps do sometimes.

Thanks you sold me. I can barely leave my house once a week.

Sucks I missed out on Ryobi 36V 33/38cm Line Trimmer 2.0Ah Kit $99 @ Bunnings (Selected Stores) as well.
One more question while at it, are line trimmer necessary? Most of the lawn is rectangular with couple weird spots due to concrete slabs and a single gate.

Personally I prefer using line trimmers as I like the edges to be neat. Always buy the bigger reels of trim though and reel it yourself every time you run out

        • I snagged this purely for the extra battery, at that price I just got a free trimmer with my battery kit.

I have the slightly bigger HP version of the 36v with the 4A battery

It handles thicker grass pretty well although it reduces the battery life by quite a bit as it goes into high power mode, you can hear it rev up as you go over thicker patches of grass. Our old gas mower died and the grass had been left to grow for about 5-6 weeks.

Our lawn is probably 300m2 with the front and back yard and takes about 30 mins to mow. The 4Ah last just enough to mow the whole thing if we mow every 3 weeks.

The catcher is pretty good at collecting the grass, there isn’t any left on the footpath from mowing.

Id agree with the other comment, the 18v might be too weak to handle the thicker grass. Recommend going with the 36v and getting an extra battery if you can, although they can be expensive

      • I was wondering what you meant but it must be this one https://www.bunnings.co.nz/ryobi-36v-brushless-46cm-lawn-mow…

Was getting confused what the price difference was for, interesting.

        • I think it has a slightly beefier motor from what I can gather, the compare tool on Ryobi's website seems to suggest it runs at a slightly higher rpm too.

    • Your mower will tend to blow grass one way, if you go over the edge of the grass will half your mower on/off the grass, in the direction it blows back onto the grass, you'll probably get 90% of it. But as others said I doubt anyone will raise a fuss either way. I only bother because my neighbour is very into lawn-care and I feel like a bum in comparison.

I posted this deal last year, got one of these and reporting back - it's been fantastic. I have a low (but not nil) slope grass of about 400sqm and the mower just manages to get it all done at the #3 setting. Keep on top of it fortnightly in the summer and the mower is fantastic. Of-course a Briggs and Stratton petrol has more grunt, but no regrets with the pull cord, noise, fumes and dealing with petrol, oil and maintenance.

Appreciate the update! I've just picked one up and have a similar sized lawn. Was wondering whether it would do it all or whether I'd need another battery. Will hold off that spare battery for now :)

  • I've got one of these for probably 200 sqmt lawn, probably mow every 3 week. I do use line trimmer and blower as well so I end up using 2x 4 amp batteries.
Its a really good mower, dont miss my petrol one

  • Anyone have an opinion on whether it's worth spending an extra $100 on this Honda mower compared to this Ryobi?

I've been thinking about getting a battery mower for a while as I've been using a corded bosch mower and I'm sort of tired of dragging an extension cord.

    • I’m wondering about the same for the Greenworks 40V mower, if anyone has feedback on that option.

  • I'm wondering whether it's worth just burying this or spending a bit more and getting a robotic lawn mower?
