Not sure what is going on with the Kogan website, I ordered this phone a few days ago, then went to post here but the listing disappeared, then came back at a higher price ($259 I think and no free shipping). So not sure how long this will be available. Requires First membership for the free shipping and discount (I plan to cancel my plan in the 14 day window).

The phone itself - specs are here:

Considered a fairly entry level phone, but for my basic phone needs it suits me fine. This is the 8GB and 256GB version. 8GB ram is the minimum I go for these days - and 256GB of base storage is quite good. Online reviews are fairly positive taking into account the recommend retail of around $400 - so $219 seems quite good.

I like phones with a headphone jack and SD card support (which is getting rare these days!). It also comes with a basic TPU case - which I also like.

Downsides, LCD screen, cameras are fairly basic, and maybe 2 OS updates. (Fingers crossed it may get picked up on Lineage…)

Currently selling at NL, HN and JB for $329

Two colours, Black and Grey (which apparently is more blue / green?)

  • Question, how come kogan au price is almost double than kogan nz. For example Type 2 ev 22kw cable is only $126.90 there but $289.74 here.

    • I don't know what is going with Kogan - I don't usually look there much (i think I saw the recent Ozbargain posts which led me to the NZ site). As per my first line the price and availability seems to be bouncing around - so some dynamic pricing algo maybe going on. AU vs NZ prices - your guess is as good as mine!

      • You’re right, something is off. Do you know if there’s a way to get au site delivered to nz?

        • Not sure - give it a go! But with shipping and GST adjustments it may just wash out.

          • @Semifinal: With kogan.com It washes out at suburb code as no nz suburb in drop down menu and won’t let you overwrite it

$10 says AI is "optimally" running their pricing and discount models

The true answer is probably, "because they can"

on ly i wished it had oled screen like my old moto poleds from lg are amazing

    • +1

I agree, oled would be best. although based on the reviews apparently the lcd screen in this unit is quite good. I will soon find out.

Any random, particularly good First deals like that electric screwdriver of old? It seems to let me apply free First without limitation and I just cancel before it winds down.

I'm just looking through now and nothing massively stands out. Their washer dryer for $600 looks like a good deal if you need one, eg the cheapest was $1000 in NZ when I was looking for one (although I ended up getting a used, $3k model one for $40 that had a wiring issue that I fixed).

From memory, though, Kogan really reams you on large item shipping, like $100-200 instead of like $50 or free from local suppliers, with no pick up option.

This is discounted a bit (not a lot), and I'd just generally recommend it hard:

I bought one for the hot water and steam and I'd say it's good enough to use without chemicals at all, hot water options are uncommon and the brands that do sell them start at like $700. Have now done multiple car interiors top to bottom, couch cushions, car mats and other stuff.

  • I bought one yesterday.
Ive now found out that its unkown if it will even work in NZ , VoLTE may not be compatable with NZ networks?.
Im hoping it will work , its an unkown with phones bought overseas or not sold from one of the NZ Telco's

I did look into this - as far as I am aware it should be fine (network, VolTE etc). I believe Moto only make one model of this phone - and it is sold by JB / NL / HN.

Yep, agree I think it looks ok to me too. Very competitive deal given the reasonable specs etc. At the earlier price of $219 NZD + free ship under the Kogan First free trial it's a much cheaper price offer than any where else in NZ, a few days back by about $100 NZD !!. And as mentioned in this posting it (was ?) much cheaper than Australian retailer discount pricing too. I've ordered the black colour model offer. (Cheapies : Kogan NZ stock pricing now varying. It went O.S for awhile at $219. Then offer went to $250 from a 3rd party seller. Right now "pre-sale" pre-order black colour option only, at that $219 Kogan NZ direct stock price deal… O.S for the "green mist" colour option).

I did try to see if the various AU ebay deals were better, but after tax, conversion and shipping I think this deal was better - and arguably maybe be less of a problem if someone needs to do a warranty claim?

(Update correction, sorry : - As at now Friday evening the 21st, for the "Green mist" colour option it was / is still actually showing "Sold Out", not O.S).

My one arrived 2 days ago. Screen is very nice , minimum of bloatware , booking.com, linked in etc.
So unlike previous motorola's , this one isnt a 'clean' android . Annoying that as part of the first updates when you turn it on,some bloatware apps are downloaded & installed & you didnt have the option not to.

VoLTE works . Thats what I was worried about.

    • Good to hear it works for you. It is funny how my wanting a headphone jack and SD card support is pushing me down into budget phone territory!

    • What network are you on? Currently with 2d and worried cos their site shows no support for the two motorola devices they list (albeit older ones)
My existing device is a Huawei P30 which is theoretically capable (One NZ lists it as ok) but 2d says no
Keen to pick up one of these if you're also on 2d :)

        Im on Skinny (Spark) .
My older motorolla didnt support VoLTE (even though it has 4G) , so I had to upgrade

      • Being a 'cheapie' I am of course on Kogan, which is a running on One. I would be surprised if it did not work on 2D. (I could be wrong but I think it is actually in the company best interests to allow it as it reduces call connection load and using data for calls against your monthly data quota amount).

        • Well.. case and point is that OneNZ supports a P30 with VoLTE but 2d does not. Clearly the phone is capable but 2d doesn't want to support.
Additionally, the Motorola G56 is stocked in a OneNZ and Spark variant in NZ so highly likely not even tested or provisioned for 2d VoLTE, let alone having the profile on an Aus parallel import.

Would love to take the plunge but not worth the risk unfortunately

          • +1

@bobsyouruncle: Fair comment. Or perhaps look to change to network that does allow it?

  • +1

From my limited understanding just because it's not supported doesn't mean it wont work, anyway if anyone wants to give the 2degree thing a whirl they could try this:

I'm tempted to buy the phone myself just for the other FREE deal rofl, but the thought of esim makes me a bit nauseous but I guess there is no turning that tide :-(
Of course just because it works today…

    • (Just to be clear this model has the "dual SIM" feature, being ither nano SIM cards and/or e-sim. :) ).

      • Oh! bummer :-( I definitely would have bought one (maybe2) if I'd realised that, are you speaking from experience of actually trialing the phone?
Of all the spec's I saw, I (may've mis-) read it as one physical sim + an esim = dual sim. To be MORE clear are saying you have used this model as phy's sim + phy's sim/phy's sim + esim?

P.S. one of my phones stopped working on calls today, Nokia pureview 9 (or something like that) Wharehouse Mobile. I haven't yet examined the root cause, maybe the switch off but could be me.

        • Yep I have one of this deal. :). Ok, no to be clear it's "Dual SIM" in the sense of : 1 x physical nano SIM card + the option of being able to connect to an e-sim too. (I am assuming that any e-sim connection is network provider dependent etc). I had been waiting along time to replace my aging old oppo phone, with a good priced brand name reasonable specs 5G & e-sim capable black coloured large screen android smart phone, with NZ retailer - manufacturer warranty. I believe that at the original sale deal price here of just $219 NZD this was great buying !.

          • +1

@ROBDEE: Thanks, yes I think it is a good deal, I just wasn't convinced it would work for me. Waiting for someone to try out VOLTE on 2degree is one thing on my list, it's FREE with added FREE stuff :-) apparently if you want to give it a go.
The O.P's gsmarena link has it as : "Nano-SIM + Nano-SIM" but that seems an outlier, but maybe there is a variation model?
Have you tried a 2nd sim in the SD card slot, probably a longshot if no 2nd phy' sim menu?
Anyway I'm not supposed to be buying stuff but getting rid of! rofl
