  • I don’t know how people can justify spending over $2000 on a new iPhone 17 pro.

It will absolutely last 5 years though. There's people still rocking iPhone 11s. A new battery is what $100 to replace, $20 to buy the parts if you want to do it yourself.

For sure! For what it’s worth, I’m currently using a 12 Pro Max and it’s a pretty rough experience on iOS 26 - even with Reduce Transparency on to remove most of the Liquid Glass effects. Maybe should have stayed on iOS 18 :)

My Pixel 6a on the other hand (coming up on 4 years) is running as smoothly as ever, particularly with M3E.

        • You can still downgrade to 18 if you wish iirc.

Yeah well that’s the thing… I’m using an 11Pro 64GB at the moment on ios 18 and I’m sick of running out of storage. Performance is fine, battery isn’t the best as the phone it is old…. I would be more than happy getting the iPhone 16 pro because of how long the models last, there isn’t that need to rush out any get the latest and greatest.

          That's the trick right?

Iphone 17 release! Time to upgrade to Iphone 14/15 as price drops

            @spam: This is the way.
I recently "upgraded" to a iPhone 13 for $500 (and still got a couple of hundred for my old one on trademe). No complaints.
Based on experience to date I'm expecting it to last a good 2 years before I "upgrade" again.

      • Absolutely, I am rocking iphone 13 pro & wife is on iphone 11 pro. We are normally on a 5 yr cycle. And 11 pro is due for a replacement.

    • Factor in selling the old one and it’s less insane

I don't think these are covered by Apple NZ warranty as with Apple's terms and conditions the phone must be purchased from an authorised Apple New Zealand dealer. And yes, it's quite good when the new model comes out makes the old model better value. Look out for "talk as cheap" website they'll be probably dropping the price of there 15 and 16 soon. I bought a 14+ $800 from them a few months ago supposed to be grade 2 not reconditioned but it was in new condition with all accessories in its original box.

    • I wonder about that. Personally I wouldn’t buy it from DS. I don’t know if these are imported but they do acknowledge CGA.

      • They carefully worded the warranty and yes, you do get a 12-month warranty, but you'll have to return it to them. Apple sends you a ticket or you can return it back to the store you purchased it from, also Apple NZ you can buy an extended warranty, including damage.

I have purchased one from Noel Leeming - $1699.00 via GEM Visa - should total to $1281.5 (a bit of a stretch haha).
    - $300 credit back for new GEM customers
    - Sign up offer of $0 establishment fee and $150 credit if you spend $1k/month first 3 months (easy spend on monthly expenses - petrol + power + groceries).

I'll cancel before the 6th month, only paying $32.50 for the yearly fee (paid 6 monthly @ $32.50).

    $1699 - 300 - 150 + 32.50 = $1281.5

I'm hoping all of this works - there's no Ts and Cs available for Noel Leeming (confirmed this via chat), so may need to challenge if any of these don't apply. Have taken screenshots of everything in case!

    • So did you sign up for Gem Visa online or in-store?

      • Online - on Saturday, then went for manual approval and they approved this morning.

        • So they confirmed for $300 credit back?

Signing up online would help with $0 establishment fee

          • @ace310: Not really… it was all a bit of a mess… this is what the Noel Leeming page says re: the $300 cashback (when you view an iPhone, and click on the link on the page:

"Get $300 back^ on any Computer or Smartphones $500 and over when you apply and spend on 12 months interest free with GEM Visa or Purple Visa Card* Available to new customers only Offer ends 23/09/2025"

I asked Noel Leeming for the full terms and conditions so I could confirm my eligibility, they sent me the link to their generic T & Cs, which didn't have any info on it about that promotion (but other ones e.g. the $250 NL voucher). When I said it wasn't on there they said: "Yes offer should still be there, unfortunatelyt I am also struggling to locater this one on there sorry, but it runs until the end of today"
I asked a couple follow up questions to confirm, and they referred me to the CC provider.

Gem/Latitude Financial Services said this promotion ended in July, I sent them the link and a quote from NL. CSR: "The offer is valid only for the new accounts, and the other fees and charges will be charged as usual. and Offer is limited to one eligible purchase on Gaming or Computers, Tech Solutions services". Me: "So I should be eligible as my account is new?" (I'd already discussed with them the purchase is for at iPhone 17 @ $1699.00), CSR: "Yes."

In the same conversation with Gem, I asked about the $0 establishment fee & $150 credit to confirm that promotion was applied to my newly opened account, and they said "We are unable to check those details from our end yet, and we would request you to wait for the first statement to be issued".

So… while I believe I should be eligible for the $300 (and $0 establishment fee, and eventually $150 credit), let's see what happens… Feel free to poke holes in my logic - I'm happy to understand if my interpretation is incorrect 😊
