  • Since these are not interconnected, they aren't compliant with the Building Act. Wouldn't advise anyone buy any of these.

    • That's true for new builds and renovations but they're fine for existing homes.

      • No they are not. Only case where that would be allowed is if there is an extremely small sleepout only requiring 1 Smoke alarm. If your changing alarms even it is exempt building work, they are required to meet the requirements of Building Code to the extent required by the act. If you were to refer to S112, you will find that means of escape needs be met with full compliance unless a specific approval is provided by the council.

Long story short… Get the interconnected alarms. There are battery options that you can install yourself and might be worth using CSC code.

        • Firstly - I agree, interconnected are better but a standard alarm is better than nothing. Secondly - I agree that interconnected are required in the Building Code. But the code is not retrospective - otherwise we'd have to condemn most of the existing houses in NZ. That's why compliance with the new standard is mandatory for new builds or significant renovations only (ie triggering a consent).

          • @ThePrawn: Can you point out where it is written "significant"?
