Beef Steak Mince 500g $5.50 (Was $8.50) @ Mad Butcher (Online or Instore)

50

It's been a couple of months but it's back again. Part of Mad Butchers nationwide specials. $11/kg for beef mince (sourced from Australia). At the time of posting this the cheapest for 1kg of beef mince from Woolworths or Pak'n Save in Dunedin was $21.90 and $18.69 respectively.

It's a good price if you don't mind foreign food.

We got some last time it was this price at MB.

Not sure if we got a bad lot or something, but we really didnt enjoy this mince. Not usually fussy with beef mince but this stuff tasted weird, and all the bags we got had chewy bits throughout.

Did we get a bad lot or is this just how MB beef mince is?

    • Not sure if they mince the NZ stuff instore or if it's processed at a central factory then shipped out around the country, but I've noticed nothing out of the ordinary with the stuff I've got from the Dunedin store in the past. It's just cheap mince like any other.

    • Same here. We got ours from the Botany Downs store. Sidnt enjoy it

I agree. The PNS stuff (strictly they were burgers, but you could just use it as mince) for $10 / kg a few weeks ago was far superior.

You seem to come across it so often Alan that maybe you could post on here next time you find beef mince for $10/kg, I'm sure people on here would appreciate the heads up.

Will try to remember to :-)

I did post about the one above at the time, but as a comment in a thread discussing mince prices (I think… memory isn't what it was once!)

          ===

Edit: Found it - I didn't post a follow-up, but I went back and bought a load more of the beef and lamb ones. They didn't taste completely like pure mince as they had the flavourings (which was fine as burgers), but even when I used them to make a sherherd's pie, you couldn't tell at all (or at least we couldn't!)

Looks like there wasn't much interest at the time, so I'd infer that the difference ($11/ kg vs $10 / kg) wasn't all that big of a deal for most people, which is fair enough.

I should note there was a slight hassle factor, as the burgers came two to a plastic wrapper, with a piece of 'paper' in between them, which I didn't spot immediately the first time, then promptly forgot again the second time, but I coped ;-)

    • Yup, bought 2 and threw the second one out. Was not good at all.

I wonder if this is different, the listing says product of NZ instead of the usual product of AU 🤔

      • Email I got said it was sourced from Australia, but you're right, the store page for Dunedin says product of NZ… so who knows? All I know is that it definitely comes from cows.

Probably why people are saying the mince is chewy.

Australia cows are all stressed out there fightin' off snakes, crocodiles, giant a$$ spiders, drop bears and who knows what else.

NZ cows are all chilled, eating their grass not giving AF. Maybe irritated a little from one rogue sheep in the paddock, but meh.

  • wats the fat content

    • I don't know the actual answer to your question, but on their website it says:

In a handy 500gm Pack, High in quality, and low in fat content our versatile steak mince is perfect for a range of different dishes and boasts a flavoursome taste. Product of NZ

No idea what they mean by 'low in fat' but I would think that regulations would require that it was at least 'relatively' true, as compared to other 'cuts' of mince?

I was curious, so I bought some of the 'low in fat' steak mince from Mad Butcher, and browned / fried it off for about 25 / 30 mins (no added fat, nor anything else - just the mince itself).

After browning / frying, I refrigerated it.

There was next to no fat that settled off the mince at all, so I would guess that it is, as they claim, low in fat, but what actual VL percentage it is, I could not say.

Today I used it to make a chilli, and it tasted absolutely fine (although chilli having so many strong flavours is not particularly sensitive to the type of mince of course).

  • My knowledge and from experience is that Steak Mince are the fattiest and perhaps the 'lowest grade' of beef mince varieties, but depending on how you perceive the quality of mince, its purpose, and the retailer etc I suppose. It's supposed to be better and leaner as it should be from cuts of beef for steak (fairly lean, tender etc) but perhaps a lot of the retailers use lower grade cuts to process it.

Normally, the common order (from most lean and more expensive) is the Premium, Prime, (just) Mince, and Steak Mince.. I know there is an even more lean option at some places above the "Premium" but not available commonly. Some people might have use for the steak mince but I honestly just pass, ever since I tried and failed twice years ago which completely ruined the meals. Great price though.
