500g NZ Beef Steak Mince $5.50 (Was $8.50) @ Mad Butcher (Online or Instore)

330

Just received an email for next weeks nationwide special at Mad Butcher, beef mince for $5.50/500gm or $11/kg. This is the usual sale price they've been doing it monthly for over the past few months, but I thought it was worth posting for those who don't know as it's a lot cheaper than the current supermarket prices.

Cheapest from Pak'n Save and Woolworths (South Island) is currently $18.99/kg ($9.50/500gm) and $19.90/kg ($9.95/500gm) respectively, (surprise surprise Woolworths is more expensive than Pak'n Save, who would've guessed?)

I'm guessing your grocery bills are quite high being a hungry hippo. I'd hate to think how high they'd be if you were a hungry hungry hippo.

Solid post.. ive actually been buying it over the last few months from Mad Butcher when theyve had it as one of their weekly specials and its been great. Decent quality.

  • The various PNS stores around us seem to regularly have 'beef mince' at $9.99 per kg - not sure how often that is though. I would assume that is the highest fat content range.

It never seems to be at multiple stores at the same time - I believe they are all individually owned, so they can do what they want when they want.

I guess might work out monthly or more often if you check them out all the time.

    • Wish ours had that price. I want the high fat stuff :)

      • Wish ours had that price.

There are at least five PNS stores that I go past regularly, all within about 15km of where I live and I suspect that there would be more if I looked one road 'away' from where I'm driving - probably worth checking all your locals to see what deals they have on.

I would note that some of them (maybe all) have different specials almost every day (weekends might be across two days).

I buy the higher fat mince for things like burgers, but lower fat if I'm making, say, chilli. However, if you want to go cheaper (higher fat), but reduce the fat content, you can also cook the mince alone, put it into a bowl, and refrigerate it, then the next day there will likely be a layer of fat on top you can just lift off. You can then use the mince as you would normally to make, say, chilli or whatever. You need to be careful about leftovers though - since the mince would have been cooked, cooled, then re-heated.

I haven't done the maths as to whether it is lower cost that way (reduced weight of mince after, but at a lower purchased price per kilogram). You'd also have to consider the time and cooking costs if you were working it out, but that will vary by person (opportunity cost of the time might be nothing for many if you just did it in the evening , rather than watching pap on TV - that's me!)

I know its not mince, but as a good example, today (at least) PNS Botany has chicken breasts for $9.89 per kg:

Make sure you change the store to Botany from whatever your default is to see their price if going to their website.

I almost never pay more than $10 per kg for chicken breasts - I just stock up at whatever PNS has then on special when they do, same as for beef mince.

Very possibly other PNS stores have the same deal today, but I'm not checking them all :-P

  • FYI - Woolworths will have beef mince for $14.90/kg from Mon 16th-Sun 22nd June.
    This is a nationwide price.
Not as cheap as this deal, but cheaper than the normally have it.

  • Our mad butchers were selling it for $10.99/kg last week so it's another 50 cent saving i guess.

Not sure your maths is quite right, $5.50/500g = $11/1kg

  • Costco - premium beef mince $12.99/kg

    • Costco - premium beef mince $12.99/kg

MoQ = One FEU Container :-P

      • ?

I believe Alan’s implying to get that price at Cosco you need to buy a large amount.

          MoQ = Minimum order Quantity
FEU - Forty foot equivalent unit (ie. a Forty foot shipping container)

          Only guessing though!

          • @bigcheese: Ah I see. I wasn’t familiar with the acronyms.
Yes, fair enough because their packs of mince are usually just under 4kg! I always remember to make sure I have space in the freezer before I go for a shop.

          • @bigcheese: Okay, okay, I might have exaggerated just a smidgin :-)

    • Yep, if you're in Auckland and out that way it's worth the membership. I go maybe every three or four weeks and get one of those which are 3-5kg usually and fill up on fuel.

I wouldn't suggest it's worth making a special trip, though.

Except for a few things Costco are cheap for the brands they stock, but they usually stock mid-high end brands making them more expensive than the cheap supermarket brands.

However I recently became more of an adult and now try to make an effort to buy NZ pork and free range chicken and eggs, and NZ canned vegetables at a price premium, so it works out for me.
