  • Keen try try sow seeds rather than buy plants this year. What is the key? Maybe not cost beneficial since ill need lamps? heat mat? what else?

    • +1

We just plant them in trays in a little clear plastic greenhouse we have outside, then into the garden once they're ready. Keeps the frost off, and the moisture level high. Haven't had to use anything special so far.

    • Get one or two of the 10$ bunnings Saxton propagation trays with dome+vents (these are top tier and will last you many years, and fully contained so can sit them in your lounge etc) that will get your seeds to the stage where you can start moving them as small plants to outside. If your house is cold grab a cheap (20-30$) heat mat off inkbird/amazon etc as some seeds will need heat to germinate. You just need to get the timing right so your not planting to early, and having transplant ready plants but still getting frosts etc outside which differs location to location. Grow lights are only needed if your keeping them inside for fulltime growing and they are not getting any decent sunlight. Watch a few NZ based youtube gardening channels probably easiest to get the rundown and follow the instructions for each seed (as not all plants like the same conditions)

    • Only plant stuff that's worth your time like growing sweet100 tomatoes from seed is not worth it vs 6 for $4 seedlings imo unless you really enjoy it or need a dozen seedlings etc.

You can get better stuff like parthenocarpic(self pollinating) courgettes seed etc which gives a great yield per plant for 1/10th the price of a single seedling.
