  • Any recommendation on accommodation in Osaka please?

    • I've personally stayed at https://bookings.beatthatflight.com.au/hotels?=1&adults=1&ch… and really liked it. Was a few years ago.

    • saying that, if you're not sure where to stay, either Osaka or Kyoto works really well if you have a JR pass for a few days for access to those, as well as Nara and Hiroshima. I personally prefer Kyoto but at the same time my wife really liked Osaka, so to each their own.

    • Business Hotels are the business in Japan. The Randor chain are my favourite (huge rooms, big bathrooms, kitchenette), but they're pricey in Osaka and Tokyo, cheap in Sapporo and Kyoto (and Kyoto is 12 minutes shinkansen ride from Osaka using the JR Pass).

Business hotels don't have services like swimming pools or restaurants, so you get better rooms and lower prices since they only have to hire receptionists and cleaners.

After that I'd suggest apartments or anything with a kitchenette, it's A LOT of fun going to Japanese supermarkets and cooking at home, and sometimes you just CBF leaving the room. You also get to eat A5 Wagyu for like $150/kg instead of the $300-400 at the restaurants (eg we would buy 100g of A5 and like 400g of Australian steak for a meal).

We have been going near annually since 2019 and would normally get a JR Pass and travel up and down the country, but this year we're going the entire October and just staying in Osaka as we have a 6 month old (plus a week stopover in Taipei at the end). We'll get a minor rail pass for the days we want to head out to some of the local areas, some can be bought in the country:

  • Terrible AI slop on your website, woof.

nice, could i stopover in Taipei for a bit?, is there any restrictions on return ticket for this?

    • +1

Yep, it costs more, though. Our tickets were like $1600 each (booked in April for four weeks in Osaka in October, week in Taipai in November), stopover added another $400.

  • I havnt played around but is it possible to do similar process for the above i.e. circa 1.1k ~ from Auckland to Osaka and then Tokyo to Auckland ?
