This wasn't something I was originally going to post as a deal but since the question was asked by @kenshiro on this post and encouraged by @wowbigdeal I thought I may as well share.
It is something I have been doing for a while now.

For every $20 you spend via the Waitomo App you always get a chance to spin the wheel to win free Moolah Fuel credit - usually $1, $2, or $5. If you're unlucky then you get into the second chance draw.

However, you can double the number of spins you get by doing the following:

Method:

  1. Gift Yourself $20 Moolah (in the App go to 'Gift Waitomo Moolah' and then choose your own mobile number as the recipient.)
  2. You then get to Spin the Wheel since you have effectively spent $20.
  3. When you go to the pump the $20 you gifted can be used to pay for fuel.
  4. Fuel up $20
  5. Spin The Wheel for fueling up $20.
  6. Repeat Step 1 as many times as necessary.

This method doesn't guarantee you free fuel but does give you twice as many spins of the wheel.

Also, when you hit $150, $300, or $450 spend in the month you get to scratch and win another chance at free Moolah.
Gifting means you reach this target in half the time.

    Thanks! I did this today (sort of) - bought 3x $20 gifts.
    Gifted $20 - spun, won $3
    Gifted $20 - spun, won $3
    Gifted $20 - spun, won $1
    Spent $76.35 on fuel. Worked out to be a 23.36c discount per litre. $2.314L of 91. Not bad!!

    The cheapie in me really wanted to fuel up in $20 amounts… but was under time constraints.

    Has anyone won a larger discount (greater than $5) recently/through this promo?

    Can you gift the whole amount you want to spend in $20 increments in advance eg. Gift $20 5 times to load $100 on and get 5 spins prior to going to petrol station, and then fill up car in $20 increments and get another 5 spins? Or does it have to be done sequentially at the time like gift $20 - fill $20 - repeat?

    Thanks for this, used it yesterday. Spent $80 to gift 4x $20 vouchers and fueled up $20 worth 4 times. Ended up getting $8 in total from spins and scratchy. Think it ended up being better than going to PnS with voucher, plus not having to wait in queue.

      Update: I've been getting mostly nothing from my spins lately, success rate seems to be 1 in 5 spins where I will get $1 or $2, including the scratchie spin.

      Thanks for the update, quite a specific fix they went out of their way to make, which fixes the "loophole" in principal but not in practice.. Can anyone confirm if you still receive the separate spins for the act of gifting, and spending? If they stopped that too that's a huge appeal using Waitomo gone.

        Yes you still get a spin for gifting.
        In my case I gift my wife $20 and she gifts $20 back.
        Alternatively, I’m sure it would still work gifting yourself if you have a dual sim.

      Also seems like you can't use your moolah balance if you decide to do the multiple $20 fills hack during each visit to a station. I mean, can't use your moolah balance during the 2nd fill.

          Yes you can.
          In fact if you have a Moolah balance then that is used first by default before a card is charged.
          I did this last weekend - 3x$20 fills and got to spin after each one. This was paid from my Moolah balance which had been gifted.
          I plan to do the same again tomorrow.

              @OmgItsHeaven: The only thing you can't do is gift your Moolah balance to someone else, but you have never been able to do that even prior to this latest update.
              A gift is always charged to the card of the person making the gift.

            @bigcheese: If you're filling using all moolah balance then that is fine. Just can't use a combination of moolah balance and credit card during the 2nd fill.

    Haven't pumped in awhile and got hit with the "You can't send a gift to yourself" message today. Boo. Came on Cheapies to confirm it's not just me. Have now registered my iPhone's dual/second sim (a 2degrees physical sim which I just recharge with $10 once a year) for Waitomo and can confirm it works fine. Registered with a variation of my name and a secondary email address. Even got the free spin for "referring a mate". Just need to "Sign out" when you need to switch Waitomo account (to do the gifting). Obviously not a easy as before but not that hard once it's setup so still worth doing IMHO
