Yes - either frozen when you buy it, or I just freeze it at home.
The great thing about mince is that you can defrost in the microwave in about 20 mins (depends on size of course), and it doesn't have much , if any, impact on the product, but I normally just take it out of the freezer first thing, and it is defrosted by the afternoon even in winter.

Most often it would be PNS and Mad Butcher, but often NW (and even Woolworths too although they would be less common recently).
If you get 'desperate' and extend out to $11 / kg then it is even more frequent. If memory serves, I think Mad Butcher did $11 / kg a week or so ago.

We have maybe a dozen supermarkets within say, 8 to 10km of us, so there is plenty of competition, especially with the individually owned Foodstuffs stores. I regularly drive past probably at least twenty supermarkets, so I stop in on my way past if they have a few good specials (or even one good special on mince or chicken), without it costing anything much in travel, time etc.

I wouldn't buy it when their special is only $17 / kg - I'd just wait until they get to $10 / kg. That's why I bulk buy when it does - that way we almost never have to pay more.

Darn! In that case, I hope everyone filled up their freezers on the Mad Butcher $11 / kg deal last month!

@Alan6984: I grabbed a couple of those from Mad Butcher and we really didn't like it. Had to throw the second one away.

@Jizah: I only use the higher fat (I am guessing that is what @Deephardfunky referred to as '85 mince') for burgers, as the leaner mince comes out dry and tasteless in that use case.
If making, say, chilli or something like that, then you can definitely use leaner mince. Alternatively, if you want to reduce the fat, you can also cook the higher fat mince, let it cool in the fridge, and a layer of fat will settle on top which you can just lift off, then use the remaining mince as you would normally, but skipping the browning which is already done. However, I have never done the maths to work out what that means in terms of the effective price (as you will have reduced the weight, and therefore increased the cost per unit weight for what is left).

FWIW my top tip for freezing mince:
- separate the mince into meal-sized portions in individual freezer bags. Never freeze in the tray, thawing properly without cooking bits is too hard. I tend to split it into smaller portions as I'm trying to reduce meat consumption and make it go further.
- I use the freezer bags inside out as gloves, then fold it back over once I've separated the portion. No messy hands.
- here's the key: gently flatten the ball of mince until it's about 1cm thick. You basically want to make a thick pancake of mince inside the freezer bag.
- remove air, twist the top and fold under. I don't bother with twist ties, they just poke holes in the freezer bags.
- place them flat in the freezer. Spread them out if possible, it makes them freeze faster.
When it comes time to defrost, simply dunk the bagged pancake of meat in a bowl of hot water for about 10-15mins. Because it's so thin it thaws quickly, with no browned/cooked edges like in the microwave. Perfectly thawed every time.
Be careful bumping things around in your freezer: it doesn't take much to punch holes in those thin freezer bags. If this happens, thawing in water will cause the meat to drown a bit, but just drain and use as you normally would. You could double-bag or get thicker bags if you don't like it.

I usually just freeze it in the tray it comes in, and thaw in the air (take it out in the morning, ready to go in the afternoon), plus less hassle / expense / additional plastic waste than buying the freezer bags.
A one kilo portion is usually about two or three times what we would eat in a meal (your family size may well be different of course), but I always cook the lot, then we eat, say, a third or half, and freeze the leftovers for another day, which saves time, but also reduces cost, since cooking two or three times as much doesn't cost much more (if anything at all) than cooking a smaller amount.

Not precisely mince (as it has mint in it, and probably other ingredients - I didn't check), but essentially so (especially if you would be making burgers!)
They also had the beef version for the same weight / price.
No idea if other PNS stores have them too, or if they will be there the whole weekend and / or longer.


I'm sure this is a reduction, but I would try never to pay more than $10 / kg for mince myself, by purchasing a load when it is that price or better, and freezing.
Only works if you have freezer space and the cash to stock up though.
I see $10 / kg probably at least once every six weeks, and maybe more like every month.
