How to Get Australian Number While Living New Zealand?

Looking for job (senior IT) in Australia while still working in NZ. So far, got zero feedback (neither deny nor confirm), so I suspect that the fact that I am currently in NZ simply do not pass the first (automated?) filter …

So how can I get a cheap Au SIM to receive phone call and to put on my CV ? Does Kogan Mobile Au ship their SIM to NZ ? Or may be some cheap oz prepaid ?

Thank you for your tips !

To activate an Aus sim you need to be in Aus and verify that with your passport details.
If you fly over and get an esim, then activate it, it should stay active once you leave, but you wouldn't receive the calls unless you were paying for roaming or had WiFi calling enabled.

You could look at a VOIP service to get a local number and then use a SIP client on your phone.

    • Oh … I though it was as simple as in NZ where you can buy SIM card for $2 and have unlimited call to Auz (Kogan mobile) … The reverse is not true then !

      • Unfortunately not, very few countries that I've been to are like NZ in giving you the ability to activate a SIM without verifying ID. I believe Aus also have a limited number of activations per ID.

I'd second looking at the VOIP option.

You are in IT, so you'd find it trivially easy for you to setup, and the cost should be next to nothing I would think (based on what you can get in NZ at least).

  • I wouldn’t count on it being because of the number. Does your cover letter include information about planning to move? Having hired in Australia, if I didn’t get clear information about intentions to move I would pretty much always put them in the no pile because there were others in the country with similar skills or I had an understanding of when they would be moving.
I’d also suggest engaging with recruiters.

    • I did clearly mention that I will move for the job in the cover letter, at the end. May be I need to put it way higher up, just after the "I am applying for foobar …". But because I did not receive any email reply, or even phone screen, I though that I end up in the No pile very quickly, which mean they probably did not even read the cover letter …

In the CV I put NZ passport in the header: this should not have any limitation on my working permit in Aussie right ?

      • It shouldn’t but you’d be amazed by the number of people who don’t understand Kiwis don’t need a sponsorship visa so you could maybe add ‘no sponsorship required’ or something to that effect.

  • Belong sims never did an ID check and they support wifi calling

    • It's illegal in Australia to sell a SIM without getting ID. The requirement is baked into their Telecommunications act.

Idk what your talking about you can get sims without ID done it multiple times without issue even activating in New Zealand

        • It is a legal requirement: https://web.archive.org/web/20120814171106/http://www.acma.g…

You use your credit card to buy the SIM and have it delivered to an address, so they can ID you from that I guess.

If you've bought an Aussie SIM multiple times and activated it in NZ, maybe consider sharing how you have done this to help answer OP's question?

        • I don't mind sending them a photo of my ID/passport. As long as they don't require me to be physically in the shop in Aussie …

          • @thesla: Yeah you still will likely get rejected but there is nothing that really says why you couldn't but i suspect they cant run your ID thru the verification service.
Your best bet is a VOIP number or Go there and just keep the sim active.
I have an Optus sim that i top up every 6 months to keep it active for those SMS codes.

      • Since when?

I purchased a SIM in a supermarket with no ID requirements. And just filled of a online form (which may have asked for a ID number, but I definitely didn't give one, or at least a real one). Zero difference from here.

That was a 1.5 years ago at most.

  • Try amaysim says you can activate in a web browser.
    https://www.amaysim.com.au/activate?srsltid=AfmBOoqY54EGK8-c…

Also your overseas, the IT market is cooked (according to reddit) they likely dont want to deal with the hassle if overseas applicants even fron nz when they have applicants thatvare on the ground already.

What type of it do you do?

  • If you know anyone in Australia that can activate a sim and then send it over then that would work. You'd want one with a long expiry (I think max is 365 days since last top up).

  • I use Felix and I activated while in NZ, both that their international data seems to be working here. CBD with chat because useless karnts.

Anyone got a cheap <$35 NZ provider for around 50GB a month?

If you're after that much data in NZ then you will have to go with one of the unlimited plans.
Currently Mighty Mobile have max speed data plan for $40 per month (usually $80) or $25 for slower speed in their monthly plans.
The max speed offer ends on 9th Feb

      • Thanks man I’m with oneNZ on a 5GB $35 unlimited plan and it’s not too bad at times. The 5 is gone within a few days but then the unlimited allows music streaming, web browsing and a little bit of social media pretty reliably (even hotspot). I was with spark last year for the same cost but at 40GB but still used the data literally overnight. Something weird about NZ is how fast the data seems to go compared to even Aus.

Despite having 4G and 4 bars I found the connection faster in Lewis pass than christchurch CBD in the last few days.

  • I have an active Optus eSim for a few years. Very handy for short Aussie trips (4 days or less). It used to be $1 a day for some data and calls etc.

Now the minimum prepay plan is $12 for 5GB(?) with calls and last for 7 days.

Is there still any decent eSim prepay in AU market that still have $1 a day or similar for short terms stays?

    • I kept one for ages as well. But I ended up deleting it as I don't go to Aussie as often (was employed by an Aussie company before) since they retired the $1 plan. I'll just buy the cheapest eSIM data plan I can find when I need it
