BNZ Advantage Visa Platinum For Cashback

I previously had the BNZ Advantage Visa Platinum, which offered $1 cashback for every $100 spent. I then switched to my current TSB Platinum Mastercard, which at the time provided $1 cashback for every $90 spent. However, since TSB has now reduced its cashback rate to $1 for every $100 spent, I’m exploring other options.

During my research, I found that the BNZ Advantage Visa Platinum now operates on a new cashback system: you earn 1.67 BNZ Points per $1 spent, and 200 BNZ Points can be redeemed for $1.28 cashback. This effectively translates to a 1.07% cashback rate, which is slightly higher than the TSB card. Both cards have an annual fee of $90.

Do you have any thoughts or suggestions before I make the switch?

One thing I've come to appreciate with tsb Platinum credit card is MasterCards mobile phone protection. I.e. if you accidentally damage your phone they will pay out up to 800 dollar annually

    Quite handy

That's a good point! I forgot about the card benefits when doing the comparison. I'll look into these.

      TSB:
      Mobile Phone Insurance
      Price Protection Insurance
      Purchase Protection Insurance
      Domestic & International Travel insurance

      BNZ:
Up to 90 international travel insurance days
      Domestic rental vehicle excess insurance
      Emergency travel assistance
      Concierge service

  • American Express Platinum ends up at something like 1.4% in Airpoints. (Which you can use to buy vouchers at 1:1 etc)

Granted I don't know how the 3 compare re things like fees/bonuses etc

    • Thanks, we do have Amex cards (my wife is the main card holder and myself the secondary) but we just use them when there's a good offer. TSB is currently our main card for daily purchases.

  • current TSB Platinum Mastercard, which at the time provided $1 cashback for every $90 spent

I think that was $70 spent, which was awesome at the time.

I'm the same, TSB as main card, Amex when there's offer.
One thing to note is if you apply to new card, you'll get subjected to the usual 3-month statements check which need to be aware of. I made a mistake before when applying for the existing TSB while wife is on maternity leave, so got rejected.

  • I have a BNZ lite card. Its my only credit card. Im reading this conversation. One thing I don't see is chat about interest rates. Are the cards you're all talking about, competitive interest rates? To me thats my first important thing. Am I wrong. Thanks

We never use credit cards for the interest rate, i.e. the credit card is always paid off in full before any interest is charged.

  • I wish I could afford to pay mine off. I am trying to.

Send me a message if you want some advice. I'm not a financial adviser but I am happy to provide some basic tips.

  • Can you please clarify why you only use Amex for special offers and TSB as normal card ?
Wouldn't you use Amex as the main card for the better points scheme and TSB only when Amex is not accepted ?

    • For me, I have the free airpoint Amex and only use it when they have the offers.
As they're the same reward rating I use TSB as the main card ($1 every $100 spent), but you're stuck with Airpoints dollar, whereas TSB is NZ$ which I prefer.

    • We rarely travel with AirNZ. What do you normally accumulate the airpoints for?

  • So I hink if you have the standard Amex then it would be best to use that as your main card and TSB as backup if Amex not accepted.

    • You only get Airpoints with Amex, not cash. What can I use the Airporints for if I don't travel with AirNZ most of the time?

  • You dont only get airpoints. They have an airpoints card and a regular points card.
    Tou can choose either one.

    • Are you talking about the dinning rewards card which give you dinning credits? I don't see any other types of cards.

  • the gold rewards card (not airpoints) allows you to redeem against other things apart from just dining.
