Youtube Premium Turkey family plan - any workarounds?

Currently using the Turkey family plan for wife and kids mobile devices, TV and iPad etc. paid for with Wise. Looks like they're finally cracking down on it. Anyone know of any current working methods to get a cheaper family plan other than the $30 they're asking for here?

Email I received earlier:

  • I also got this email, on an account using Revolut.

  • Looks like this is only for Turkey memberships? Anybody from India, Argentina or other countries received this email? I have Indian membership and nothing so far.

    • On the ozbargain forums a couple of people have mentioned getting the same email for Argentina and Ukraine accounts

      • Yep, I got it for Argentina.

    • I don't have a problem with my Indian membership. The family plan price went up last month. Also, I am using my Indian credit card as the payment method

      • +2

Indian credit card, nice. How about you pay for my YouTube with it, and I pay you the cost +10% into your NZ bank?

    • My India membership (paid with ASB Visa) got cancelled. I was asked to agree to a price increase which I did but I still got the cancellation email this morning

  • Same here for Turkey with an ANZ credit

  • Can you just make a bank account in Turkey lol - as a Kiwi??!

    • You can get one through Wise. I have one linked to mine, though I am not sure how to use it for online payments once adding their currency, as the virtual cards generated are for my NZ account.

      • +1

I have one linked to mine as well, I also have a wise physical card. I updated my payment method in youtube to use the physical card instead of the virtual and Google did a temporary hold check in TRY currency. I wonder if that's enough to fool them, will have to wait and see next month.

        • Interesting. Did you load TRY on for it or just NZD?

My premium is via Argentina. I had Turkey setup for Netflix before they also started making that difficult. I have recently dumped it for Stremio with a Real-Debrid account as they started making sharing the account a pain.

Will be good if that works though. I really don't want to lose my Premium, mostly for Music, as I have a network level ad-blocker and work from home, so that would deal with YouTube itself.

          • +1

@CrusaderNZ: I usually load around 3 months of TRY currency at a time on it for youtube. There was still some on there, but the hold check was for 0 TRY anyway.

Honestly, I don’t mind losing it for YouTube, as there’s workarounds but losing Music will suck, unless I can find a way to get cheap Spotify.

I’ve switched to SmartTube on android/google tv and it seems to work perfectly fine. I can probably do revanced on the android devices, only going to lose it on my old iPad. Might just look for an android tablet on Black Friday or something

            • +2

@kinetic9: Sporify you can use google pay to be in turkey for a couple of bucks a month for a family. I also have tidal in Kenya as i prefer it over spotify but my partner likes spotify.

          • @CrusaderNZ: By the way, how are you finding Stremio + Real Debrid? I was thinking about it last night to try it out. We’ve never used Netflix anyway, just torrenting and Plex, but my Plex machine is getting old and can’t transcode 4K and I realised we don’t watch as much as we used to.

Does it have a decent amount of children’s shows? They use the TV more than me now lol

            • @kinetic9: I don't watch kids shows but it has most things via torrent, so you'd probably be okay.

I have used Real-Debrid for years but just on PC with jdownloader. I recently found out about Stremio and their recent release of it for LG TV's (2020 and up).

I was impressed with how well it worked in my OLED but LG's WebOS doesn't support Dolby Vision via mkv files, so last week I got one of those new Google TV Streamer boxes and paid $6 for an external video player called Vimu that can handle everything including the sound formats my TV and Soundbar don't support (DTS and True-HD).

Now I am really happy with it. Few quirks here and there but I am able to stream 80GB Blu-ray remixes without issue, which is pretty bloody good

Real-Debrid makes that possible, their servers are fast. Even when playing something that is old or obscure with a few seeders it just pulls it across to their servers and then streams it to you at full speed. Sometimes you might need to wait a little bit for that process but usually it is really fast

              • +1

@CrusaderNZ: Funny you mention the Google TV Streamer, as I literally picked one up yesterday to replace an aging Apple TV HD from almost 10 years ago. Got sick of not being able to install what I want with Apple devices even though I know the ATV 4k has much more grunt. Interesting that Vimu works with True-HD as there's a current bug where True-HD doesn't work with the streamer, there seems to be a few people posting online about it. I found the same that anything with True-HD through Plex would just freeze, even though my soundbar supports it.

A few hours before you replied I said screw it and started setting up Stremio and buying a Real-Debrid account, been playing around with setting it up all afternoon :)

                • +1

@kinetic9: I wasn't going to buy it because I read the same thing about True-HD, but others were saying they had no issues. I ran into that issue last week watching Blade Runner 2049 but got it to work after fiddling around with the sound settings in Vimu and I watched Batman (2022) last night with it on. I got a bug where it just freezes after 20 mins into remuxes and then I have to reload the video to get it to work again (Doesn't happen with TV so it is HD audio codecs that my Atmos soundbar doesn't natively support causing I think). I changed the buffer in Vimu to 500MB and it seems to mostly have taken care of it, despite the buffer showing as being at 100% before when it was freezing.

                  • @CrusaderNZ: That's interesting! I think I have some leftover Play credit, I might pick up Vimu and have a play with it.

                • @kinetic9: No Chromecast/Google TV devices can passthru lossless audio codec (Dolby TruHD, DTS-HD MA, etc), not even the new one they recently released (Google TV Streamer). The best option is Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max, which can passthru any audio format you throw at it. I got one a few months ago at half price to replace my existing CCwGTV.

                  • @patwobbly: Unfortunately I already have it and I can't be bothered doing a return. To be honest it's fine for us, we just use a soundbar and aren't discerning enough to tell the difference. They may fix the True-HD thing in an update seeing as it's new, but we're happy with it for now considering it replaced a 9 year old non 4k Apple TV.

                    • @kinetic9: It's the chipset that they use doesn't support passthru of these codecs, not a software limitation (at least for CCwGTV). The new Google TV Streamer uses MT8696 which is used in the PREVIOUS generation (2021) Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max. Such disappointment. I care because I just bought a Samsung HW-Q990D which supports all of the lossless audio codec and I want to get my money's worth :D

                      • @patwobbly: Yeah that's a good plan. I think my soundbar supports True-HD and DD+, I think it's the Q900A? It's a few years old now. but I'm not too worried if it's just software decoding vs passthrough. I don't have rear speakers and I don't find it matters much with a sound bar vs. a proper AV receiver setup. We usually have to turn the volume down anyway when we're watching while the kids are asleep :)

                        • @kinetic9: Buy a set of rears for your soundbar, the upgrade they offer is transformative. I would've never even considered owning a soundbar after hearing them at friends places and never being impressed by their soundstages, but none of their setups had rear speakers, then one day I saw a Q600A with 9100S rears on Trade Me for $250 which I grabbed partly because I was curious to see what it sounded like but mainly to flick on for a quick buck, and I was so impressed by the sound it delivered I ended up keeping it and putting my "cheap" Denon Atmos amp & Wharfedale speakers into storage. Then a few months later saw a Q950A with RA95BB rears on Trade Me with a $300 buy now (which I couldn't hit fast enough) and the sound from this thing is on another level, after owning it for a week I had to admit to myself that I was never going to go back to my amp & speakers so ended up flicking them on instead, and sold the Q600A for $500 meaning that the Q950A only ended up costing me $50.

I was insanely lucky with the deals I got, you'll probably end up paying around $150 - $200 just for a pair of 2nd hand Atmos rears, ($350 at PB Tech https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/SPKSAM79500/Samsung-SWA-950…) but if you care about your sound the upgrade is definitely worth every penny.

                          • +1

@Flippant: Thanks, I'll have to keep an eye out for a second hand pair in future. Have to wait for the kids to grow up so we have more time to actually watch anything. I used to care more about getting high quality surround sound, but now as long as we can hear it it's all good lol. Maybe once the kids are older and stop wrecking things I'll get a better TV and sound setup.

                          • @Flippant: I have been eyeing 9500s for quite a while and can't get it cheaper. Need one for my q800c. $350 still feels expensive.

                            • @ace310: It's so hard to describe just how big of an upgrade they are, but let me put it this way, if I didn't know what kind of upgrade they offered I'd be hesitant about the price as well, but I do know what a difference they make, and if my speakers blew up tomorrow I wouldn't think twice about immediately ordering a new pair at full price to replace them.

                              • +1

@Flippant: Damn, you sound like I am definitely losing something special. How will I explain this to my wife. I will hear lots more from her then from those speakers, haha. Probably, now I need to find a way to sneak them in somehow lol.

  • So got the dreaded email, my Argentina holiday has come to an end.

Seems the routes are pretty narrow now, anyone got any good suggestions? Seen so many different attempts but nothing springs out as that good.

A weird one I got recommended was buying a membership on Alibaba - the reviews seem to be ok, no idea how they would make it work I presume add me to group plan, sort of cheap - anyone try this?

    https://www.alibaba.com/trade/search?spm=a2700.product_home_…

    • My post above….gamsgo.com

You're buying in to a New Zealand based YouTube family plan, they manage, with random people. Paid $40.14 for 6 months, so $6.69 per month. No need for a VPN for sign up or ongoing payments. Has been flawless.

      • Thanks. I guess thats a last resort and not a bad one by the looks. But was looking for a family plan ideally. Guess the kid's can just watch the ads 😀

  • Got the dreaded email today. Family Plan in India for several years now. I'm giving in and going legit because all 4 of us in my family use YT Music and YT a lot. Going from ~$4 to $29.99 per month is a sting though!

    • +2

That sucks, but that's too much of an increase for me - $48/year to $360/year.. that's like a 650% increase! It's going to be a pirates life for me I think, even though it takes more effort to setup on multiple devices

      • Just signed up to the student offer and it's $10.49/month. Not too bad I guess

  • I got the dreaded email yesterday as well - was anyone able find any loop holes around?
Been searching non stop haha so far no luck

    • Honestly I gave it up, I just use Revanced on mobile for YT/YT Music, Smart Tube Next on TV, Firefox with uBlock Origin on browser.

    • I got the email over the weekend.
      Currently sub is from Argentina.
Turned on my VPN (NordVPN) to Argentina
Tried to add a Wise Card for payment to reenable - failed, and google auto cancelled my subscription.
Then just used my normal ANZ Platinum Card and worked (using VPN)
Cost has gone up a bit from Argentina (from USD4.30 to USD6.50), but not enough for me to make a hassle of it to switch to another country.
      YT Family Plan.

      • Got any spare space on the family plan you want to rent out to me?

        • +1

          Sorry, already full :(

    • Caved in and bought the NZD family plan at $29.99 :( - just a wee jump from $7 with Türkiye ahaha

first ad was "skip ad in 48 seconds"

  • Got the different email today:

Your YouTube Premium membership was canceled because we believe the subscription country of Turkey was inaccurate.

If you want to maintain access, please sign up for YouTube Premium again within the new few weeks…

    • +1

Wouldn't waste you time setting it up in another country, they are doing this to all of them. Mine is in Argentina.
