I have three of these as part of my home security. It takes photos of burglars and emails it. Install salient eye on it. Works well

  • You get a + for the creative description Shaw!

  • @mikeperro1 Awesome, I've been thinking of doing exactly this for a long while. Mind sharing more about the experience? How's the image quality out of this phone?

    • Hey Jeff, Jay has provided some information in a comment below.

  • Called a couple of DSE stores and they say they 'think' this comes with sim card AND $19 vodafone prepay. If true, this is pretty good value with basically a free phone plus $19 prepay.

Smith City have the same phone, confirmed with $19 prepay, plus three months of double data/minutes, with monthly carryover. At $28 for the full package.

So if the DSE deal doesn't have the $19 prepay, then the Smith City is the better deal. Just a pity that the $19 prepay isn't transferable to another vodafone account. Then could bulk up your main phone and keep a couple of backup phones

Oooh! Plus another CC raffle ticket appeared just after I posted this. Bonus!!

    • Maybe if someone gets one they can let us know.

      Good luck with the raffle!

Yes, DSE store manager confirmed that a $19 prepay is preloaded into the sim for selection when the phone is activated. So effectively a free phone with a $19 prepay, with double data/phone minutes for next three months.

Worth noting that a few folk I know are now using these cheap smart phones along with the app Salient Eye to create a very cost effective fully monitored automated home security system. Salient Eye turns the phone into a motion activated video/photo security camera.

Depending on the settings you engage, it will text/email you as soon as it's sensors are triggered. You can then use the app to stream live footage to your main phone so you can immediately see what is going on. Can also tap into live feed at will to monitor those pesky pets/teens while away.

With ultra cheap smart phones like this one, can easily set up a couple of these phones around vulnerable areas. Apparently these phones also perform quite well in low light conditions etc.

      Just a thought.

      • Hey mate, wondering if it'd be possible to get a few sample pics from someone who is currently using this system? Jeff above was asking, but I can't seem to find anything elsewhere.

        • Yikes, sorry, just noticed how similar this post was to Mike's. Apologies for the content duplication.

Links showing setup etc. Quality of surveillance only as good as the camera on phone, but still good with the alert process anyway. Using rear facing camera and pinhole cutout allows for discrete placement of the camera. Obviously has it's limitations but good enough for suspect situations as per the news link below.

        • @Jay: Might be able to further enhance the performance of this smart phone security system by getting one of these Fisheye or Wide Angle (and macro) lensfrom Zapells.

        • @Jay:

Regarding the news report, these are the photos:

          http://ws.salient-eye.com/EventReport/mel-rodrigues879708/20…

would be interesting to see if the lens did help at all too.

        • @Shaw: Yeah, that link is in the three I put up. The photos are really too far away but the neighbour had priors so wasn't too hard for the police to figure out who it was.

Better to use it for indoor use, unless using a phone with a decent camera. Theses Smart 4 Fun only have a 2mp camera so fairly limited.

The additional lens would just allow the phone/camera to cover a wider angle of view.

There are other apps, besides Salient Eye, which do similar things such as let you link phones and laptop via wireless network. Don't even need a phone plan for those. Can set it up so you have real time feed via your home computer.

        • @Jay:

Oh crap, must be more tired than I thought.

I couldn't even see a face in any of them though, just a torch light. Idiots.

Yea, in a well lit, indoor, environment it would work fine.

You can get decent IR cameras for ~$100 though, so if you need something decent it isn't too expensive anyway. Setup 4 for a family friend in his house, and they work a treat, 3MP lens, but it's crystal clear, and the IR is clear as too.
