I’ve read somewhere that Spark numbers needs to be activated with a plan before it can receive SMS. Is this true? Anyone have experience with pre-paid sims from Spark?

    • +1

I haven’t had a Spark Sim for a while but have never had to pay for a plan in order to activate and still received SMS no problem in the past

    • Years ago spark/telecom could delay your SMS if you didnt have an active plan.

  • +2

Why is it called "half prepaid sim"? What's half about it?

  • -1

Or free with any Spark mobile, save $0.29

So buy a phone to get a 29c sim for free. Doesn't sound like a deal, lol.

    Or just use this…?
    https://freevisitorsim.com/

I have about 50 right now.

    • Initially tried it and it was all good no questions asked. And then the second time, it asked me to explain the purpose and provide them with more information. Has that ever happened to you?

      • +1

Would rather spend 29c and not have my info shared.

Who knows what they do with it.

        • yeah I prefer to buy sims over the counter. Only downside is checkout lady will give you looks like you're some kind of drug dealer lol

          • @The Hound: When I bought them over counter, I just said oh we have a sports team coming over to NZ from overseas XD

          • @The Hound: Luckily, the store I go to does not care even when I buy 100pcs at a time.

          • @The Hound: last time i bought many sims they were all expired warehouse ones, i was wondering why the packaging was outdated.

            • @coffeee: yeah I think those went for cheap like 10 cents? It was a while back.

Use a throwaway email and number. The only thing you can't hide is the address that they deliver to, but you could use a P.O box for that.

I mean, if people are willing to use social media and pretty much everything else that tracks you, sharing your name isn't going to make a difference. Privacy is a joke these days and people are being paranoid for no reason.

      • Nope. I give out fake names, fake emails and numbers. Never been questioned.

    • -1

But why? That's just abusing the service for people who might actually need to use it.

      • It's not like they're going to run out of stock. And if you only need 1 or 2, I don't see what the problem is. If you abuse it and ask multiple times to get like 50+ then sure you're abusing the system, but aren't we all on Cheapies for a reason? Plenty of Cheapies or Ozbargain posts on pricing errors and the deals get upvoted like crazy and people jump in because it's a "good deal". Is it immoral and unethical to capitalize on such deals? Maybe. At the end of the day, it's down to where you draw the line and what you consider it to be the limit.

$0.29 per SIM card is really not much different to a free SIM card. Even if you get like 3x, that's still under $1. By not getting 3 free SIM cards from FreeVisitorSim, you're saving them barely $1 and that's not much of a difference let's be real.

If it was $29 per SIM card, then I bet you 90% of people would not hesitate to get a free SIM card using my method. Perspective is a funny thing.

Anyway, use it as you see fit.

        • My issue isn't with the price of the SIM card itself, it's with what they are having to pay to ship the SIM card to you.

          • +1

@kfr23: Then they shouldn't be providing free SIM cards.

I mean, if someone is offering FREE stuff, then I'm not sure what your problem is. Free stuff is free stuff. If they want to do this at their expense and nobody is forcing them to, then that's a good thing they're doing and that's cool.

Also, pretty sure it's government funded. Surely our tax money goes towards these things.

  • damn i still have a bunch of warehouse mobile ones from the OG $1 warehouse stationery deal back in the day

    gotta start dealing drugs again

    • +1

Do you know if the SIMs still work? My understanding was after 1-2 years of issue the numbers expire unless topped up so they can recycle the number to new SIM cards. Or is this just after activation and no topup? I've definitely had some Warehouse SIMs not work anymore.

      • +1

i'm not a heavy user but i think i've had one or two not work anymore awhile ago, while the others still work recently

i dont know how that works

      • I've still got a bunch of SIM cards waiting to be used.
Might have to test the out.
Ever since Waitomo pretty much stopped doing the free spins for fuel every month and Mobil canned the free carwash/coffee, I haven't had a need for them.

        • Yup, Waitomo, Mobil, Z were my go to.

    • Are those the red or green packs? Either or, they will expire. So that means the red packs have all expired by now.

      • +1

I recently activated the last red one I got for $1 some 2-3 years ago, still good. Comes with $5 credit.

        • The credit you get is only when you transfer number from another provider right?

      • -1

        They all red

  • +1

You can get free sims at a lot of hotels/motels, they have them in the lobbies in the tourist attractions racks. I got a bunch of 2 degrees ones, haven't used any so don't know if they can received texts without activation.

    • Haha a true cheapie

  • I got two. what do people use these for? ubereats?

  • These could be the old 3G packs, and 3G network is closing 2025

    • end of 2025

  • +1

Just noticed in the features information for this SIM:

Suitable for devices that use Standard, Mini or Micro SIM sizing

Don’t most smartphones use a nano sim these days which is not one of the sizes mentioned?

  • just opened a pack
    definately nano
