California King - Do You Regret Buying Such a Big Bed?

Hi

Currently have a queen bed. Mattress getting slight sag and is 10yr old so time for a new one.

Will upgrade to s.king or cali king mattress and slat bed.

Looking online at sheets etc there seems to be very limited availability for cali king. We prefer heavy 100% cotton (not sateen) on the current bed. It's either very expensive or out of stock.

My question for those who have cali king:

Do you regret buying such a big bed, do you wish you went with super king instead?

Where are you getting your linen from and are you happy with the quality?

There are also less options for c.king mattress and base. Looking towards ecousa mattress and base (currently 35% off this weekend). We prefer a firmish mattress and i don't like a hot bed. I'm told that if we switch to latex/foam usually you find it a bit firmer than a firm pocket spring (which is what we have currently). I am open to a little softer however bc i now prefer to sleep on my side nc of snoring.

Thanks
Kiwi

  • We have two kids 2+4yrs so the bigger bed will be nice. We will be moving house in a few years i suspect but i think the size of the bed shouldn't make too much difference.

Bought a super king in Australia, and it wasn't until we brought it back here and bought a very expensive super king sheet set that we realised that the Aussie super king is the same size as NZ Californian king.

Apart from that, do I regret buying such a big bed? Absolutely not. Wife and I love having so much space, so long as your room has enough space for the bed.

If you can get a suitable base for a good enough price, sheet sets should be easy to find: just buy Aussie super king sets from Amazon!

  • Oh, I'll also add: I haven't tried Ecosa but ours is an (admittedly older) Koala, and we love it. Wouldn't go back to a spring mattress again. I think I've read that Ecosa is a bit firmer than Koala.

    • How old is the koala have read that the you get more sag is the bed gets older with foam/ rubber mattress, but can't remember if that is specific to memory foam or rubber or something else.

You also get hybrid beds with pocket spring and foam from the online bed in the box stores as well.

I'd be annoyed if i had sag at only 3-5 years. Having said that maybe the is the heavy people having that problem

Very slight sag, but still pretty comfortable at 8 years. I can see us going another 2-3 years at least I think.

Sorry, I just looked up the receipt and we're actually at 6 years, not as old as I thought. But it definitely still has a lot of life left in it.

  • The bed base from ecousa is why i am leaning towards ecousa. Although there in no obligation to buy a mattress from ecousa with the bed base.

Only $950-1050 for s.king / cali base delivered and it's a design we like. 35% discount this weekend, which i think is uncommon to have such a good discount, i think usually it's 20%.

    • We have a s. king for over 10 years and recently have been thinking about upgrading to C.King, and have the same interest/concern about Ecosa and the base being not refundable.

We loved our cali king, but when we had the bed replaced under insurance we downsized to super king which fits the room so much better.

If we had another opportunity I would probably go to a king because of the room size.

  • Hi Kiwi!

Hubby and I still think our California king bed was one of our best purchases ever. We don’t mind the bed taking up most of the room and would buy another one again. We have an ecosa which is 4 years old and still just as comfortable as the day we brought it. I’d buy an ecosa over and over. We recently went away and were desperate to get back to our bed! We have 4 kids so it’s big enough for at least 2 to come in. You can pop 3 normal sized pillows across the top. Hubby and I are on the outside and 10m old in the middle with enough room to spread how ever you want - so big I can’t put my cold feet on hubby without moving closer to him in the middle haha.

As for sheets/duvet covers I get ours from I’ll list below. We only like 100% cotton for sheets & duvet covers.

Briscoes - on clearance you can pick up a set from $60-$100 for 400+ thread count.
Bed bath and beyond - the same deal there.
Harvey Norman - yesterday I got a $300 400 thread count for $75 in their Manchester clearance. They also have duvet covers.

I highly recommend the momo wool duvet for it (yes it’s pricey but amazing) which fits over the sides nicely too.

To summarise buy the bed - you won’t regret it! Hopefully haven’t bombared you with info but ask anything if you want to know more.

    • Thanks. Which ecosa mattress did you buy (they have a few options.). Did you buy their base as well, was thinking about zen base.

      Zen base - https://www.ecosa.co.nz/zen-bed-base

Mattress options (align firm vs pure vs ecosa) - https://www.ecosa.co.nz/view-all-mattresses

      • Heya!

We had a frame custom made by our local wood furniture shop - was pricey but worth it!

We chose the Ecosa as we only wanted foam and no springs

  • As mentioned here I went with s.king specifically due to limited bed & linen options. Wife didn't like the bed from ecosa and not much options out there which are good and reasonable so had to get s.king. No regrets. All of us like firm mattress and we don't like spring ones. Have 2 kids (age 3,7) so having a big mattress helps alot.

  • How timely, I'm currently going over the question in our household - just wondering if the OP has pulled the trigger yet?

Also confused around sizing - seems like some of the bundle deals look like good value, but not entirely sure what mattress to get!

    • Be aware different sizing for nz and au

NZ super king = AU king = 183cm wide
NZ cali king = AU super king = 203cm wide

      • Thanks - yes it doesn't help when there's conflicting information on their own website..

Case in point - https://www.ecosa.co.nz/bundle-pure-rise - from the bundle page it shows the super king base as being 216cm wide, but when you click on the actual page for the base itself it says super king is 196cm…

I was leaning towards the pure mattress, but it looks like super king is the biggest you can get…

  • Cali kings are great, we got the ecosa and love it but its super painful to find sheets. You need to look at the dimensions on them because many companies have australian sizes so it would be a super king, really uou need to look for the ones that are 203x203cm.
It can also be hard to find sheets for them, we wanted linen sheets but even ecosas own sheets dont come in the size for their cali king. Other than that, no issues and its great having that space if you have room in your house (which you might not if its older and you have large night stands)

  • We have an Ecosa CaliKing (203x203). Love it and would never go back down in size again, however this makes travelling not fun as we're used to luxurious amounts of space so anything below seems tiny.

Sheets are also harder to find, more expensive, are a PITA to clean due to their size, devour line space or need individual cycles in a dryer. BIG plus though, the fitted sheets are square so there is no wrong way to ever put it on the mattress.

Another positive of the square shape you can rotate the matress 90 degrees every sheet change to even out wear on it as well.

    • Thanks didn't think about the 90 degree rotation. Yes getting the L and W wrong on the fitted bottom sheet is annoying as f…

  • The only thing I can say is new houses are tiny. And I mean it.

New houses have very tight spaces to bring your mattress in or when moving house. Taking it on the upper floors etc

Even tiny front doors. So keep that in mind.

Mentioning this because you said you will be moving houses.

  • Bought 2x King Singles from Tempur. If you easily irritated by movement of your SO, this is the solution. Also the independent movement (into almost seat position) is great to watch movie or read book. And obviously, easier to move.
