Amazon AU No Longer Charging Card in AUD?

Just placed a order on Amazon (AU site) and noticed my card was charged in NZD, previously they charged in AUD. Their site still says they charge only in AUD. Anyone else noticed this?

For a $192 AUD order I have been charged $238 NZD which is rather high - should have been about $200-205 letting my bank do the conversion.

I contacted their support and they say it's just because the charge is pending on my card and to contact my bank. I'm with Kiwibank and I'm almost certain even pending transactions show the currency they are in…

  • Its not due to adding gst or something?

    • Nah it's definitely not, can see the order breakdown by subtotal, shipping, GST etc. $192 AUD is the total all up.

  • +3

I did an order on amazon au on the 21st, it was charged in AUD.
PS, get a Wise card, you'll get a better conversion rate then Kiwibank (or any nz bank, last I checked). e.g. 182.32AUD turned into 194.08NZD

  • I placed an order a couple of days ago, shows in NZD on my card but it's converted at the correct rate.

    • Does your bank statement show the amount in AUD as well (i.e. your bank did the conversion) or did they charge your card in NZD?

      • I'm with ANZ, the amount shows only in NZD, can't see the AUD amount unless I check on the Amazon side.

        • From the Amazon site:
"Currently, all payment methods will be charged in Australian Dollar (AUD)."
          https://www.amazon.com.au/hz/cs/help?ref_=icp_currency_help&nodeId=GDX4RY8D2M85FHLD#:~:text=Currently%2C%20all%20payment%20methods%20will%20be%20charged%20in%20Australian%20Dollar%20(AUD).

Kind of weird then that it doesn't show the AUD amount on the statement…

I'm not with ANZ, so I cannot be sure, but in general with most banks:

If Amazon charged you in AUD, your bank would show the AUD amount, and the converted NZD amount (your bank doing the conversion, and you getting your bank's cross-rate), whereas if Amazon charged you in NZD, you would normally only see the NZD amount (Amazon doing the conversion, and you getting Amazon's (bank's) cross-rate).

Usually, your bank will offer a better cross-rate than party from which you are purchasing (and Wise will usually offer a better rate still than your bank).

        • Am also with ANZ. If you click the transaction (on mobile app) it shows you the details which has the AUD amount and the conversion rate used. The high level figure (non details view) will be the NZD amount.

          • @mpc: That's what I've seen in the past as well, however this latest purchase doesn't show the AUD amount or any sort of conversion.

  • Placed an order 2 weeks back for total of $77.50 AUD using westpac credit card. Paid $84.22 in NZD (conversion charge of $1.59). Wise would have been cheaper for sure as it would come around $82.35. Forgot to check which card was selected.

  • I use wise virtual card works very well with Amazon au and Amazon usa and jp

    • I cant seem to find any Amazon JP items to ship here. Theu show up but when you click on them, they cannot ship to my address. What are you buying from there?

      • I think you have to buy from the actual amazon jp website as opposed to the amazon au site

  • Pending overseas transaction on foreign currency purchases appear on my Kiwibank online statement in NZD but with a "pending" tag. Once they clear, they show up as two transactions - one the transaction with conversion details plus another one for international transaction fees.
