  • I feel most of these are really scams. They exclude actual oil and force you to buy them at inflated prices which end up being more expensive.

    • I just had a look at the T&C's and for cars under 2ltr and arnt diesel engines, cars with cartridge filters, V6, V8, turbo-charged and 4WD vehicles, there are no additional costs.

I would suggest learning to do it urself, it is a basic task and you will get satisfaction out of completing it.

Most council tips will take household motor oil free of charge.

During the service they will "find" more things wrong with your car and happily charge you to "fix" them.

    • they have to get my concent prior to completing any extra services on the car asides from what is listed

  • The only time I would use these "vouchers" is for jobs that specify exactly what you're getting, like a wheel alignment, tyres, oil change etc. and ignore their upsell.

When it comes to "services" it's usually more vague other than filter + 4L of oil (Prius uses 4.5L with filter) and they will definitely try and upsell in such cases because they do a visual check on things. It's basically the same as usual + more compelling upsell, but you are the judge and can probably just say "I'm going to sell it soon" or something to get out of most things.

Ultimately you have to know the car is good and only needs filter + oil, and using the vouchers can be a good deal for people who don't want to change it themselves; the catch is that the amount of scumbaggery is highly dependent on the mechanic and/or the driver's gender/appearance.

We have used it to buy the Takapuna Car Clinic services for the last few years for 6 different cars in our immediate family, they are great. They charge a bit extra for oil for our Ford cars but not for the other 3 makes.

      Agree they're great!

Awesome, thanks for sharing your experience. i think i'll give it a go for a basic service :)

  • Looking at the fine print it says they use the highest quality filters, parts and oil that meet vehicle manufacturer’s specifications, but the price is based on a standard spin on oil filter to the value of $20.00 (the highest quality filters cost more than $20) and 4 litres of either 10w30 or 10w40 (this will likely be based on budget mineral oil only recommended for older cars). So reading this you may well be charged for 4.5 l of SAE 0W-20 (which you should be using) full synthetic oil at premium pricing, and I think a Prius has a cartridge type filter, plus top ups of any fluids that look slightly low. You'll almost certainly be presented with a list of upsells that you'll need to decide on from a phone call or else you might discover that a lot of the checks don't get done. They get a lot of bad feedback on No Cowboys and I'd be surprised if you come out of it with change from $200.

You might be better to go to Oil Changers, where at least the pricing is transparent and you're only paying for the service you need. If you do use them, please report back

    • Thanks for sharing!, i certianly will call before to confirm, i did hear that sometimes they say one thing over the phone and something else when they actually do the service. i have also noticed some google reviews saying positive things about the grab one vouchers. i might test my luck and see how it goes anyway

    • Hey mate, just used AP general motors Grab one voucher and had no issues at all. i called them prior to confirm any price increases and they said since the oil needs 5w30 its slightly more. had no issues and ended up paying $109 - which is more than the voucher but certainly good price for a car service
