Gasmate Portofino 16" Pizza Oven $499 + Shipping/CC @ Harvey Norman

40

I've been keeping an eye on this pizza oven since it's release here and $499 is the cheapest it's been so far. RRP is $649 and it was on special for $549 just after release.

Seems like the best current alternative to the Ooni Koda 16" which is $1299.

I grabbed one earlier today with the $20 Afterpay instore deal to make it $479.

  • How many BTUs does this one have?

    • 28.8MJ conversion is 27,297 BTU

      • 12,000 BTU's of raw cooling power!

  • This looks pretty close to the Koda 16 I have - which is freaking awesome BTW. The same two sided burner, looks almost like a straight copy. If it's as good, then 15-20 pizzas to break even at todays wood fired pizza prices - ~$30 at Al Volo (RIP) and up to $40 at Dantes…

    • how much did you pay or Koda?

      is it gas?

      • +1

I got it in the Black Friday sale - $1040 - and yup it's the gas only model. There is a multi-fuel one that a friend of mine has, but it requires separately purchased burner to get the gas going. I saw the Gasmate one, it had just been released, but I decided to go with the known entity.

        • you use it enough to justify buying it?

          • +1

@justaddwater: I've only had it 3 weeks, and it's had 3 outings, including one where I took it around to a friend's house for drinks. I've made around 12 pizzas, so in my internal justification based on pizzas costing $25-30 to buy, I'm 1/3 of the way there on ROI. My kids love pizza, so I think it was worthwhile. Also I'm planning to take it camping this summer so will get a fair bit of use. The pizzas are so much better than anything I could make in the oven and with gas, if I have some dough in the fridge ready to go, I can fire it up and have 2-3 pizzas cooked in around 45 minutes from start to finish.

I was humming and harring about buying the Koda 16 on Black Friday. Mitre 10 were willing to price match the Ooni website at $1039, but weren't able to go further with the extra 15%.

A big plus with the Ooni is they give you 5 years warranty, whereas the Gasmate only has 1.

$1k+ is a bit too steep for me, so that's why I went with the Gasmate Portofino.

The Koda uses an L shape burner. The Gasmate Portofino is U shape.

Got my new perforated peel and turner on the way. Can't wait 😁

          • @Christo: Why wouldn’t they do the extra 15%? I’ve had that once where they were refusing to do it but couldn’t give a reason why. Stood our ground and they ended up giving in.

            • @Joshyss: The guy said because Ooni were the suppliers not a competitor, so they could only pricematch them, not pricebeat them. I'm not sure if he just made that reason up or not, though. But if he was willing to do the extra 15% then I would've bought it on the spot as that would've made it $883.15.

              • @Christo: I would have argued the point. It’s an advertised price and I cant see anything in their t&c’s about not matching a ‘supplier’. I’d say you would have gotten it if you had stood your ground.

                • @Joshyss: Oh bugger. I guess in hindsight I should've… I'll see how long my Gasmate Portofino lasts for. Then I'll try for the Ooni again 😎

But I wouldn't expect the cooking experience of both be much different though.
