How do you pay for your Amazon purchase? Do you use your NZ bank card or Wise and does that make a differences? What is the best way to make payment so we get the best converted rates? Do i set my currency to USD before check out to get the best rates? (Try search function here but couldn't find the answer i remember i saw someone replied at the comment section before) Cheers!

Wise generally has a good conversion rate and lower fees so I would go with that.
You don’t need to convert it first as Wise will do it automatically anyway unless you already have USD or AUD in your Wise account. In that situation it will use that first.

As mentioned above, wise mostly. Pay in default currency, in your case aud. USD for amazon us or aliexpress.

You can get Amazon Au gift cards from cashrewards for 1% cashback as well.

  • @bigcheese @ace310 thanks guys, when i check out i selected my Wise card as payment method, and it ask me to choose my Wise card currency, should i select NZD or USD? Just checked im actually on Amazon US not AU

      Use the local currency.
If you are on Amazon US then choose USD.

If you choose the local currency (USD in your example) then your bank / payment provider (Wise in your example) determines the cross-rate that you get (since they settle the liability in the local currency).

If you choose your domestic currency (NZD in your example), then the retailer (or the retailer's bank) chooses the cross-rate you get since your payment provider (Wise in your example) then settles the liability in your domestic currency.

You will find that, almost always, your own bank / payment provider will treat you better.

If you happened to have the local currency already in your Wise account, then there is no cross-rate to consider (for that amount at least).

      • Thank you for this Alan!

  • I've bought off them several times. I just use my Westpac Debit card… Works for me.
