Define r5 great case for HDD server, bought one this year. Takes 8x 3.5" , or 10-11 if you use the 2x5.25 bay.

Same reason as posted in other thread have been looking to upgrade my case. Currently have only 2 bays. Got a caddy from ali to fit in 5.35 bay. But need something better as looking for couple of drives as well.

From where and how much you got it for?

Computer lounge. Paid $180 plus postage I think for the titanium colour which was discounted colour at the time.

Btw it comes with trays and slots for 8x 3.5"

They don't sell the additional cages separately if you wanted to cram in over 11 HDD using fractal r5 cages. You can't seem to get them anywhere anymore.

      • If you are building a Nas for this form factor then buy this case. I spent quite a bit of time researching what was available and I think this is the best for this form factor and size.

        • Yes. Even my research ended me on this, so was looking. 8 Hdd is more then enough for me. I think Max I can go is 4 & 2 nvme, on mobo support. Yes, I can have pcie addons to extend, but should be fine.

How is the airflow & noise. This 2 are my main concern as it will be kind of near to me while working from Home and I need bit of silence.

          • @ace310: It is quiet. It doesn't get hot.

I use unraid so the HDD are spun down. When I access media only a single HDD will spin up. When I write new media data then only two HDD spin up (data HDD and parity HDD). Downloads and applications are run off nvme.

The CPU usage is minimal so no heat is generated and there is no separate GPU to make heat either.

So I am running a very quiet system anyway.

It is in a cupboard but when I open the cupboard it is not really audible.

There are lots of reviews online but I'm pretty sure it is quiet as long as you don't have a toaster inside it.

If you are running 4x HDD and it's on your desk, you might like to look at a smaller case.

If you want better airflow get a different case but more airflow means more noise.

The case has deadening rubber panels and vibration isolating grommets etc.

If you play a game you can swing open the front panel for cooling.

            • @kiwijunglist: That's good to know. Thanks.

I have similar stuff. Currently media & data on same disk as need to buy them, but after 1hr of no activity they are spun down. Currently both my drives are spun down.

Not on desk, but in a corner in home office. Might put it behind the sofa in living room as I got space there but that means have to move sofa a bit so once all done will think.

I don't game and don't intend to either. GPU is not required right now, plex is working fine. Might consider in future if needed but doubt it.
